Executive Summary
Nkwamira Sustainable LifeTrust (Nkwamira) requests the grants / sponsorship of Tanzania Shillings
217,297,500 from the private enterprises, financial institutions, private companies, and
government institutions, NGOs, development partners and other individual well-wishers. The grant
resources requested will be utilized to implement the “ONE BOOKONE CHILD ” project which aims
to increase access to secondary and primary schools text books for vulnerable students in Temeke
District primary and secondary schools. The proposed project is intended to be conducted in Dar es
Salaam Tanzania on the outskirts of the Municipal in the suburban residential and characteristically
slam areas. People living in these areas are in condition of extreme poverty and consequently, they
have no possibility to afford the costs of basic needs, such as quality education, shelter, healthcare
services and food.
According to the baseline information degenerated from the District Community Development and
Social Welfare Offices it revealed that, the majority of the families in Temeke district have an average
number of six children per household and they struggle to survive by doing casual or temporary jobs.
Therefore, all the family income is basically directed to basic needs first and in most cases they
cannot afford the cost of school fees for the children. In the case of a family that can afford the cost
of school fees, most of them don’t have money to purchase school materials, as exercise books and
text books. As a result most of these poor families choose very simple and poor but affordable
schools for their children. Children from poor families attend schools that have no libraries, text
books hence giving no opportunities for research.
In responding to the critical condition for young school youths in Temeke district, Nkwamira
Sustainable Life Trusts intends to mobilize financial resources by engaging key stakeholders in
fundraising for purchasing 2,500 text books for primary and secondary schools.
Nkwamira is an organization established for the purpose of transforming lives through quality
education. The name NKWAMIRA is a combination of two names of two people who changed
people’s lives in their community. The late Mr. Nkwayi and his beloved wife Malmira changed
people’s lives by educating them on how they can sustain their lives. As early as the 1940s, this
couple had realized that people’s lives will not be changed by giving them handouts, but by giving
them tools and skills to know how to provide for themselves.
In honor of the good work they started, Nkwamira Sustainable Life Trust was formed with the notion
that if it could be done for one community, then the same can be done for every other community in
Tanzania. Nkwamira Sustainable Life Trust is an NGO that works with women, young people and
other vulnerable groups. This vulnerability could have been caused by various factors such as lack of
quality education, acts of injustice, extreme poverty, substance abuse, among other undesirable
factors. The organization was officially launched in 2010 by few pioneers with a deep desire to see
local communities empowered, enabled and transformed. Their passion is to see these communities
producing upright, responsible citizens who respect humanity and fight illiteracy and substance
abuse, with a view of having meaningful and fulfilled dreams, ambitions and expectations of life.
NKWAMIRA became a fully registered organization on 11th June 2010 under Cap, 375 as a Board of
Trustees. It is a non-profit making, non-religious and non-political organization, which at present
plays a leading role in creating awareness, direct social support and advocacy for the vulnerable
populations due to the aforesaid factors. Nkwamira's missions is transforming lives through quality

education; quality in the sense that we provide special interest groups with the relevant skills needed
in order to perform the activities that will better their lives. The main target group of the NGO is
interventions to young people, marginalized rural women and local communities .NKWAMIRA’s
Head Quarters are located at Obama Road on the Ocean road Flats at the Ground Floor and a branch
office in Mtwara region
Since its inception in 2010, Nkwamira has implemented several community based projects in
realization of its vision and mission. In order to live up to NKWAMIRA’s objective of empowering,
enabling and engaging the community, education is our focus as it is a tool we all use and need .We
have worked with various organizations to bring change in our communities, and together with our
partners we have three successful and life changings projects. The Fist One Book One Child project
which had National bank of Commerce as the main sponsor, supported by other partners like PSPF,
Massad Mining , GAC to mention a few helped us donate text books to ten schools in rural
Morogoro. We are still monitoring the students 'performance after the books donation and the
results show an increase in positive performance in the ten schools and the zone.
In another project, in collaboration with our Premier Partner CRDB Bank we launched an Adopt a
Well Project in Singida and so far we have drilled three wells in three schools supported by CRDB
BANK, ESB International and Superdoll. The wells are now providing clean and safe water to Kizega,
Sumbalungwala and Kinambeu Schools, and subsequently the students and neighboring
communities are drinking clean water and are NO longer walking TEN kilometers to fetching unclean
water.
In our continued mission of transforming lives, we recently partnered with Barclays Bank Tanzania to
empower out of school youth. Today, we are proud to have empowered two hundred youth on
entrepreneurial skills, interpersonal skills and financial skills to name a few.
Generally we have worked with other like-minded partners and well-wishers though out our
existence with partners like DTP, Clouds FM, Radio 5,Bang Magazine, IPP Media, A1OUTDOOR ,IEEE
,Inner space Africa, MAP 4 LIFE, FIX Agency,A1OUTDOOR Maxcom , to name a few.
The Project Rationale
Since 2002, the Government of Tanzania has been implementing Primary and Secondary Education
Development Program (SEDP) and (SEDP) with two specific aims: making education more accessible
and improving its quality. While significant success has been made in extending access, improving
quality remains a challenge. Dar-Es-Salaam is the highest populated city in the country and the one
closest to where policies are made, so it is often assumed that the situation there is generally better
than elsewhere. Still, the media has published anecdotal evidence about schools in Dar-Es-Salaam
lacking learning materials and being in dire need of improvement. Against this backdrop, Uwazi
carried out a survey between August and December 2010 to assess the quality of amenities in a
sample of 40 primary and secondary schools in Dar-Es-Salaam’s three districts: Ilala, Kinondoni, and
Temeke.
The data gathered shows that, contrary to common belief, public schools in Dar-Es-Salaam face
major challenges in providing facilities of adequate quality for students. Poor quality and quantity of
classrooms, insufficient number of desks, and lack of textbooks are all common occurrences.
Nkwamira believes that most of these challenges can be resolved, but doing so will require first and
foremost an informed public that has access to space to meaningfully engage and contribute to

discussions to improve quality in schools. The average number of students and pupils per classroom
in the surveyed schools is 81,much higher than the national target of 40 students/pupils per
classroom that was to have been reached in 2010. Considerable variation exists between schools.
Availability of textbooks is critical to learning. However, the survey conducted by Twaweza shows
that in most schools, textbooks are lacking. The average students/pupils to textbook ratio is5:1 in
primary and secondary school classes. Across schools, there is major variation in the availability of
books. At 2:1, the pupil to textbook ratio at Mlimani primary and Secondary School is one of the best
among the surveyed schools. This relatively better situation is because most pupils/students in the
school bring books purchased for them by their parents, and not because the school is better
funded. At Kunduchi Primary and Secondary School, the student’s book ratio for the whole school
and across all subjects is 10:1; at Tandika Secondary School, it is 15:1. At Bunju A, for some subjects the
student’s book ratio is as high as 45:1. At the extreme
In recognizing the needs for community and private sector engagement in social cooperation
responsibilities in relation to the current education sector challenges in Dar-Es-Salaam, Nkwamira
Sustainable Life Trusts presents the ONE BOOK ONE CHILD fundraising project to collect a total of
Tanzania shillings 217,297,500 for purchasing 2,500 text books for 10 primary schools and 10
secondary schools and monitor its effectiveness in the Temeke district. This proposed education
support project is intended to contribute to the government efforts in the provision of quality
education in Tanzania by increased access to learning materials for vulnerable schools ,young people
in Temeke district and Dar-Es-Salaam region as a whole.

  • 2. Nkwamira Sustainable Life Trust “ONE BOOK ONE CHILD Project Proposal” 2 Executive Summary Nkwamira Sustainable LifeTrust (Nkwamira) requests the grants / sponsorship of Tanzania Shillings 217,297,500 from the private enterprises, financial institutions, private companies, and government institutions, NGOs, development partners and other individual well-wishers. The grant resources requested will be utilized to implement the “ONE BOOKONE CHILD ” project which aims to increase access to secondary and primary schools text books for vulnerable students in Temeke District primary and secondary schools. The proposed project is intended to be conducted in Dar es Salaam Tanzania on the outskirts of the Municipal in the suburban residential and characteristically slam areas. People living in these areas are in condition of extreme poverty and consequently, they have no possibility to afford the costs of basic needs, such as quality education, shelter, healthcare services and food. According to the baseline information degenerated from the District Community Development and Social Welfare Offices it revealed that, the majority of the families in Temeke district have an average number of six children per household and they struggle to survive by doing casual or temporary jobs. Therefore, all the family income is basically directed to basic needs first and in most cases they cannot afford the cost of school fees for the children. In the case of a family that can afford the cost of school fees, most of them don’t have money to purchase school materials, as exercise books and text books. As a result most of these poor families choose very simple and poor but affordable schools for their children. Children from poor families attend schools that have no libraries, text books hence giving no opportunities for research. In responding to the critical condition for young school youths in Temeke district, Nkwamira Sustainable Life Trusts intends to mobilize financial resources by engaging key stakeholders in fundraising for purchasing 2,500 text books for primary and secondary schools. Nkwamira is an organization established for the purpose of transforming lives through quality education. The name NKWAMIRA is a combination of two names of two people who changed people’s lives in their community. The late Mr. Nkwayi and his beloved wife Malmira changed people’s lives by educating them on how they can sustain their lives. As early as the 1940s, this couple had realized that people’s lives will not be changed by giving them handouts, but by giving them tools and skills to know how to provide for themselves. In honor of the good work they started, Nkwamira Sustainable Life Trust was formed with the notion that if it could be done for one community, then the same can be done for every other community in Tanzania. Nkwamira Sustainable Life Trust is an NGO that works with women, young people and other vulnerable groups. This vulnerability could have been caused by various factors such as lack of quality education, acts of injustice, extreme poverty, substance abuse, among other undesirable factors. The organization was officially launched in 2010 by few pioneers with a deep desire to see local communities empowered, enabled and transformed. Their passion is to see these communities producing upright, responsible citizens who respect humanity and fight illiteracy and substance abuse, with a view of having meaningful and fulfilled dreams, ambitions and expectations of life. NKWAMIRA became a fully registered organization on 11th June 2010 under Cap, 375 as a Board of Trustees. It is a non-profit making, non-religious and non-political organization, which at present plays a leading role in creating awareness, direct social support and advocacy for the vulnerable populations due to the aforesaid factors. Nkwamira's missions is transforming lives through quality
  • 3. Nkwamira Sustainable Life Trust “ONE BOOK ONE CHILD Project Proposal” 3 education; quality in the sense that we provide special interest groups with the relevant skills needed in order to perform the activities that will better their lives. The main target group of the NGO is interventions to young people, marginalized rural women and local communities .NKWAMIRA’s Head Quarters are located at Obama Road on the Ocean road Flats at the Ground Floor and a branch office in Mtwara region Since its inception in 2010, Nkwamira has implemented several community based projects in realization of its vision and mission. In order to live up to NKWAMIRA’s objective of empowering, enabling and engaging the community, education is our focus as it is a tool we all use and need .We have worked with various organizations to bring change in our communities, and together with our partners we have three successful and life changings projects. The Fist One Book One Child project which had National bank of Commerce as the main sponsor, supported by other partners like PSPF, Massad Mining , GAC to mention a few helped us donate text books to ten schools in rural Morogoro. We are still monitoring the students 'performance after the books donation and the results show an increase in positive performance in the ten schools and the zone. In another project, in collaboration with our Premier Partner CRDB Bank we launched an Adopt a Well Project in Singida and so far we have drilled three wells in three schools supported by CRDB BANK, ESB International and Superdoll. The wells are now providing clean and safe water to Kizega, Sumbalungwala and Kinambeu Schools, and subsequently the students and neighboring communities are drinking clean water and are NO longer walking TEN kilometers to fetching unclean water. In our continued mission of transforming lives, we recently partnered with Barclays Bank Tanzania to empower out of school youth. Today, we are proud to have empowered two hundred youth on entrepreneurial skills, interpersonal skills and financial skills to name a few. Generally we have worked with other like-minded partners and well-wishers though out our existence with partners like DTP, Clouds FM, Radio 5,Bang Magazine, IPP Media, A1OUTDOOR ,IEEE ,Inner space Africa, MAP 4 LIFE, FIX Agency,A1OUTDOOR Maxcom , to name a few. The Project Rationale Since 2002, the Government of Tanzania has been implementing Primary and Secondary Education Development Program (SEDP) and (SEDP) with two specific aims: making education more accessible and improving its quality. While significant success has been made in extending access, improving quality remains a challenge. Dar-Es-Salaam is the highest populated city in the country and the one closest to where policies are made, so it is often assumed that the situation there is generally better than elsewhere. Still, the media has published anecdotal evidence about schools in Dar-Es-Salaam lacking learning materials and being in dire need of improvement. Against this backdrop, Uwazi carried out a survey between August and December 2010 to assess the quality of amenities in a sample of 40 primary and secondary schools in Dar-Es-Salaam’s three districts: Ilala, Kinondoni, and Temeke. The data gathered shows that, contrary to common belief, public schools in Dar-Es-Salaam face major challenges in providing facilities of adequate quality for students. Poor quality and quantity of classrooms, insufficient number of desks, and lack of textbooks are all common occurrences. Nkwamira believes that most of these challenges can be resolved, but doing so will require first and foremost an informed public that has access to space to meaningfully engage and contribute to
  • 4. Nkwamira Sustainable Life Trust “ONE BOOK ONE CHILD Project Proposal” 4 discussions to improve quality in schools. The average number of students and pupils per classroom in the surveyed schools is 81,much higher than the national target of 40 students/pupils per classroom that was to have been reached in 2010. Considerable variation exists between schools. Availability of textbooks is critical to learning. However, the survey conducted by Twaweza shows that in most schools, textbooks are lacking. The average students/pupils to textbook ratio is5:1 in primary and secondary school classes. Across schools, there is major variation in the availability of books. At 2:1, the pupil to textbook ratio at Mlimani primary and Secondary School is one of the best among the surveyed schools. This relatively better situation is because most pupils/students in the school bring books purchased for them by their parents, and not because the school is better funded. At Kunduchi Primary and Secondary School, the student’s book ratio for the whole school and across all subjects is 10:1; at Tandika Secondary School, it is 15:1. At Bunju A, for some subjects the student’s book ratio is as high as 45:1. At the extreme In recognizing the needs for community and private sector engagement in social cooperation responsibilities in relation to the current education sector challenges in Dar-Es-Salaam, Nkwamira Sustainable Life Trusts presents the ONE BOOK ONE CHILD fundraising project to collect a total of Tanzania shillings 217,297,500 for purchasing 2,500 text books for 10 primary schools and 10 secondary schools and monitor its effectiveness in the Temeke district. This proposed education support project is intended to contribute to the government efforts in the provision of quality education in Tanzania by increased access to learning materials for vulnerable schools ,young people in Temeke district and Dar-Es-Salaam region as a whole. The overall objective of the project The overall aim of the project is to contribute to improving the quality of education and learning condition for vulnerable school youth in Temeke District schools by supplying them with textbooks. The overall objective of the proposed project will be achieved through the following specific objectives. ď‚· To identify 10 primary schools and 10 secondary schools with urgent needs for schools text books, particularly for vulnerable pupils/students in Temeke district ď‚· To disseminate a total of 2,500 primary and secondary schools text books for 10 identified primary schools and 10 identified secondary schools in Temeke district ď‚· To conduct comprehensive monitoring and evaluation of the proposed project to ensure quality and effective project implementation and quality utilization of the disseminated text books in Temeke district as well as see the improvement in the students' performance.
