Summer Assignment 2014
Harriet Davie 0146
Visit to the National Portrait Gallery
Above and to the left are my four sketches of four
paintings that I liked from the BP portrait awards. I
chose to draw in a variety of mediums: chalk,
graphite and fine liner. To create different moods to
match the original painting.
During the summer holidays I visited the national portrait
gallery to see the BP portrait awards. Above are some
photographs from the visit. This is where I was able to gather
research and inspiration for my own self-portrait.
Study of portrait painting
Javier Palacios undertook a Degree in fine arts at Valencia
Polytechnic University and an MA in artistic production at
Valencia Polytechnic University, where he is currently
studying for a PhD in artistic production and research. His
work has been seen in group exhibitions in the UK, Spain and
Taiwan.
The portrait is of the artist’s friend Luciana. In choosing a
close-up view of the sitter, Palacios wanted to accelerate the
moment of apparent intimacy and familiarity between two
strangers: the sitter and the viewer.
The portrait has been painted in a stipple-effect with the
brush strokes following the direction of the skin and features
of the face. Some of the colours are unrealistic: bright reds
and green. But still overall looks realistic from the use of
shadow to create depth in the painting.
Video of process
On the left is a short film I created following
the process of how I created my painting.
From its initial stages of sketching on the
canvas to painting the complete portrait. You
are able to see the style in which I work and
how I work.
Practical study
The artist who inspired me:
Yunsung Jang under took a bachelor’s degree
in fine art painting at the Academy of Art
University, San Francisco followed by a
masters degree in fine art at New York
Academy of Art. His work has been seen in
group exhibitions in New York, San Francisco
and Berlin and in 2013 was awarded Best of
Show in the June Ray MarArt 7th Annual Fine
Art Competition. The portrait is of the
artist’s mother. Yunsung Jang says he
wanted to record not just her physical
likeness, but the depth of their relationship,
including ‘the complexities of devotion,
pity, guilt and gratefulness that a son feels
toward his mother’.
My opinion of the project
Things I liked/found easy:
I enjoyed visiting the national portrait gallery and seeing the BP portrait awards
which has inspired me to enter when I am old enough. I can appreciate looking at
realistic paintings and seeing the detail that has been put into each painting. I
enjoyed painting my self-portrait because I like trying to make it look realistic and I
find painting relaxing. I found the case study was easy to complete as I was lucky
enough to have someone that I could interview easily.
Things that I disliked/found difficult:
As I was very busy during the summer holidays I found the amount of work given
quite stressful to complete in time.
Overall:
Overall I enjoyed the project as I really like painting and drawing, especially
portraiture. I also enjoy visiting galleries which I was able to do for this project.
Professional case study
For my professional practice case study I spoke to the creative director of the graphic design company Bulletproof. I was able to ask him
various questions on how they manage a project whilst I was working there this summer.
How the artist or designer clarifies and negotiates a brief, interpretation
of the requirements of the brief and the needs of the client:
• they either get offered a brief or sometimes they might instigate a brief
by doing some proactive work
• have a meeting with the client
• bulletproof team would go away, and internally discuss the brief and
create a cost proposal/budget or no budget and create a timeline
• put the brief through the strategy team, to create a strategic approach
• Design equation= something + something = what the client wants
How they organize and manage a project plan:
• the timeline is used to manage the project
• The timeline is tracked to ensure they complete the project in time.
• They decide how much time they think they need and tell the client.
• the budget gets allocated between project management/client services,
design time, artwork and production time
How they liaise with clients, customers and the general public:
• Client services role is to liaise with the client to make sure the client is
happy
• If the client has agreed the platforms and the designer’s success
equation, and the design meets the criteria then they should be happy
with the final outcome
Professional practice case study
Their attitude and approach to their specialism:
• Bulletproof are very confident and straight forward talking
• They are a hard working and motivated team of people.
How they modify and develop initial ideas to produce a final outcome:
• rough sketch approach or something more finished. If it is too finished the client will read into the design too much
• They present the rough ideas in a meeting to choose the ideas with the most potential, whilst evaluating the good and the bad within it
• The design gets crafted (refined). Artwork is created in illustrator/Photoshop and the artwork team makes sure the designs are printable
How they choose materials, techniques and technology and the processes they use to produce the work:
• bulletproof work with a lot of very big clients, therefore techniques and materials are already decided upon by the client
• sometimes bulletproof can dictate finishes such as varnishing or foil
How they respond to constraints that affect their work (these will vary according to the situation but could include costs, scale, resources, time):
• There are constraints to techniques and processes that are in place for example, if you are doing a can design you might be limited to the print process and
the colors you may be able to use
How the commercial viability of the work has been considered:
• If Bulletproof present the work back to the client and they have the platforms and strategy right, and as long as the design answers all the questions that the
client initially asked, then the design should match that brief
