Project Overview
In this section you will outline the aim of the project/task and give an
overview of the activates you undertook to complete it.
What was the theme of your project and
what attracted you to it?
• The theme for my project was a Past and Present view of York and its
surrounding areas. We were tasked with creating something that
would invoke an audience from the area and I thought that this
concept would be creative and interesting as it shows you the areas
you know and recognize, as they were before you had either a
conscious memory or alive. I think some aspect of the interest is
created by a weird sense of nostalgia which certain photos will give
you as its still the area you know but with slight changes so it does
still feel like you know it.
What research did you undertake and how
did it help develop your project?
• The research I did by myself I mainly looked at different artists and
photographers, my main two were David Hockney and Shimon Attie.
Attie’s work was focused on creating projections of historic images
onto the buildings that they were of; the work was usually on derelict
areas that had either once been great empires or areas affected by
conflict. I used this as an inspiration for most of my videos and I
wanted to recreate this projection type feel with the gradient overlays
I created.
How did you develop and improve your ideas
throughout the project?
• My ideas were developed while researching into different artists and
photographers. My ideas developed as I took inspiration on from
their work and projects.
What was the outcome of the project/task?
• My final outcome was a set of 8 gradient overlay photos and 1 collage
photo; 9 total. I’ve presented them all has an Instagram profile with
all my images including the ones that didn’t make the final cut put
into highlights on the page with the main 9 taking up a 3 by 3 grid on
the page.
Personal Response
This section will explore your thoughts and feelings about the
experience. This will help gain a understand of how your personal
feelings may have impacted the final outcome.
How did you feel about the project before
you started?
• Confused and very little hope. Originally, I didn’t think the project had
any potential to be able to create an interest or a good result and felt
like it was overly confusing for what it was
What do you think about your project development and
how did it help you to refine your idea?
• Overall I think it went well, I was happy with my final products
however I wish id looked more into David Hockney and done more
work around his Joiner project style.
Did you collaborate on your project or engage
contributors, etc?
• No I didn’t collaborate or have any contributors put anything towards
it. However I used many old images with uncredited artists and
photographers, all from the press’ directory throughout the years
How did you feel when the project was
completed and why?
• Thankful as I felt like my motivation for it continued to decline.
However I was happy with how my piece turned out but I just want
to move onto the final project.
Evaluating the project
In the previous sections, you have been commenting upon the project development. The
evaluation may include some similar information but it will also include critical comment.
An evaluation must include information about the good and bad points of the project and it
is important to be honest. Finally, you should make a judgment about the effectiveness of
the success of the project
What were the good points about the project/task and what did you
learn from them? [try and think of at least 3, more if possible]
• I really like my end product, I think it looks good and is almost exactly
what I wanted to create.
• The collage image I think went really well. I wish I had done more
involving that idea
What challenges did you face and how did you
respond to them? Try and think of at least 3...
• The main challenge was trying to get some of the photos; most
common problem with these were the severe amount of tourists
bobbing around York. They made it very difficult to get into the right
places and get the right angles without them being in the way or
ruining the shot
• The second issue was trying to get certain angles for some shots, the
one down lord mayors walk along the shop front had to be scrapped
purely as I was notable to get into the right place due to traffic.
What were the negative points about the
experience, and what could you have done to
improve them?
• My only issues with the project is not doing more on the David
Hockney style photos and developing them more and how I
presented the photos in the end.
How would you rate the final piece? [think along the lines of
poor, satisfactory, good or excellent...justify your rating]
In between satisfactory and good. I like my piece and I think the work
and idea was good; however I feel like it was very limited on what was
possible and I didn’t branch out and explore as many ideas as I could
and should have done.
What is your opinion of your final piece? What
elements do you think are successful and why?
• I really like my final piece. I think the images look good and
professional, I think the idea and the way of portraying it was unique
and creative.
How did you design apeal to your target
audience?
• I focused on local areas as the target audience were based in York and
the surrounding areas. This means that all the locations would have
been places they would recognize and know, as well as the older
image which will create a sense of intrigue and interest as its
recognizable yet new and different,
Analysis
In this section, you will focus on the details of the project and make
sense of what happened in the project. You should demonstrate how
your decisions informed the project development and the success of the
outcome.
In what ways was the overall project a
success?
• I think a majority of the final photos are very nice, they display the
ideas I was trying to convey and I think overall there interesting and
have a lot to them.
What elements did not go well and why?
• I think the display of the photos could have been a lot better, when
starting the task I didn’t think too heavily into how I was going to
present my images and this really showed as I had no real unique or
interesting way about laying them out. It ended up with just an adobe
spark website and an Instagram page; these are fitting just very bland
How did your skills develop during the portfolio? [remember,
skills aren't just technical, remember things like organisation,
time management, communication, etc as well]
• Technically, I feel more confident in using Photoshop and being able
to bring to life my ideas and plans without having to make too many
cuts and changes.
• Time management especially I feel like I still need to improve and get
on top of to be able to progress into the next band.
What meaning and messages did you want to
convey and were you successful?
• I wasn’t really aiming to convey any hidden messages or meaning
within the piece. So I didn’t have any in there.
What feedback did you get from your peers
and viewings?
• On the adobe spark website to make it more clear what each section
is and to create a little paragraph talking about the process and ideas
behind the images.
What would you do differently in the future
and why?
• Id like to present my work in a physical layout, through maybe a
scrapbook or some physical printed and distorted images. Maybe
creating a collage and ripping out images to reveal a layer of either
past or present underneath
What knowledge have you gained that would help you in the
future to improve your project?
• I would know to allocate myself more time for gathering footage in a
future project. This is because things like traffic, changes of area and
tourists and overall business really affected a lot of my images but it
was too late to scrap it and find different locations to photograph.
Action Plan
This section will identify what you would do differently in the future and
identify ways you could develop.
If you were making a similar project in the
future, what would you do differently?
• Id like to do a similar project but from a more expansive view, not just
localized around York. Maybe include more known areas like
landmarks or fit them to a certain theme like a movie, cliché or songs.
How could you develop your skills for future projects? Please
identify the appropriate resources and courses. For example,
webpages, tutorials, books, short courses and qualifications.
• Watching YouTube videos and practice I think is the best way to
improve. There's now tutorials for everything on there and there's no
better way to improve than experience and practice.
What personal attributes could you develop to
ensure you are working at a professional level?
• Time management; sorting out my ability to work within a time frame
and keep up to date with my work would definitely help me produce
better pieces of work
