Summary Of Theories Of Relativity By Barbara Haworth-Attard
Homelessness is an issue that has been affecting almost every part of the world in one way or the
other for as long as humanity can remember. There has always been a group of people that are
considered to be lesser than the average that struggle every day to obtain the basic human needs
such as food, shelter, clothing etc. The book "Theories of Relativity" by Barbara Haworth–Attard is
an excellent depiction of how numerous amounts of young teens continue to struggle to get by on
the street every day and gives a great point of view from their side. Barbara Haworth–Attard's main
focus in this book was to destroy the stigmas that are attached to the homeless youth by giving the
general population a chance to understand the story from their side, ... Show more content on

This behaviour and severe drug addiction may cause him to be on the streets forever. During the
time that Dylan was at the library and twitch came up to him in order to greet him, Dylan thought,
"there is something seriously wrong with twitch, medically wrong. He is never still" (Hawarth–
Attard, 21). Not being able to stay still and being abnormally thin are common side effects of drugs
that are commonly sold on the streets such as heroin, weed etc. Twitch's addiction to these drugs has
caused him to to lose the sense of reality when it comes to finding a way of leaving the streets and
getting a job. His is unable to maintain himself and act normal, which may become a huge problem
when it comes to finding a job for himself in the future. Furthermore, later on in the novel, it was
introduced that Twitch was extremely sick and was admitted to the hospital. When Ainsley was
telling Dylan about Twitch, she said "in the hospital. He's sick with pneumonia and hapitas. They're
not sure if he is going to pull through" (Haworth–Attard, 212). Twitch's addictions had caused him
to get extremely sick and him not having enough money for treatment before, he had to be admitted
in order to fight for life and death. It was not very clear whether Twitch actually pulled trough but it

Socioeconomic Status In Adolescence
There are many factors that can impact different types of development throughout conception to
adolescence. One of the major factors is socioeconomic status. In a study, adolescents with a low
socioeconomic status are more likely to become teenage parents than people in other classes. With a
low SES, teen mothers engage more in risky behaviors such as drinking and smoking, while also not
being well informed which can lead to them not getting the prenatal care they need. The result is
infants born with birth complications, such as low birth weight and preterm. Within a low SES,
adolescent parents know less about child development, which is why they have extremely high
expectations of their infants, perceive their babies as more difficult, interact less with them, and
more often engage in child abuse. Adolescent parents in a higher SES are less common, but typically
they have a greater access to medical attention and a greater support system. However, adolescents
in a high SES may have permissive or uninvolved parents. This may result in the teenager acting out
to try and get attention, which can result in risky behavior. These children also have a greater chance
of anxiety disorders from the added stress of trying to maintain a good image and impress their
parents. Typically infants born into a low SES do not receive the care they deserve. During the fetal
stage, they are more exposed to teratogens which can lead to greater health risks. These health risks
may not be

Unit 110 Work with Parents to meet their Children's needs
Outcome 1 ac1 The relationship between parents and their children is constantly adapting, beginning
at birth. At birth is the point when the strongest attachment bonds form and parents strive to meet
their baby's every need.
As the child gets older i.e. around two years old the relationship as parents begins to change they
start educating their children through discipline etc. When setting boundaries for discipline rules are
implemented. The rules provide children with the freedom to express themselves within certain
boundaries enabling them to learn and develop effectively.

It is commonly believed that dropping levels of oestrogen and progesterone trigger the depression
that many new mothers feel.
One part of parent of parent hood which can become frustrating is that everyone becomes an expert.
The problem with this is that you feel what you are doing is wrong as opinions often conflict with
each other and in most cases many opinions are old wives tales. Thankfully in my experience my
mother in–law is a midwife and she was able to tell us what current opinion and research suggest is
best but explained all is at own discretion. On the other side negative feelings can arise towards the
baby due to complete overwhelming experience and at this point having the ability and awareness
that there are people to speak to in order to ease the load and help with this and that its common.
The most common change is that occurs even with the most confident of people is a Fear and/or
feelings of incompetence. New parents don't automatically know how to care for their babies. They
should try not to worry if they feel like they don't know what they're doing. Parenting takes lots of
practice. Parents learn as they go and can't expect to perform perfectly from the beginning.

My Observation At Oakwood Methodist Preschool
I conducted my observation at Oakwood Methodist Preschool on May 9, 2016 at 9:30 in the
morning and 3:00 in the afternoon. The child I observed was a 16–month old female that I did have
previously relations too. I use to work at Oakwood Methodist as an Extended Care Teacher. I use to
care for Baby M in the infant room. During the observation there were two teachers, and 7 infants.
The room that the observation took place in had many toys such as: balls, bouncers, walkers, rattles,
and soft plush books. There was also a play mat where all the toys were, and two rocking chairs in
the room. During this observation I focused on 6 different developmental domains. In my paper I am
going to discuss perception, motor skills, cognitive ability, communication/language, social skills,
and emotions.
Perception is how the infant incorporates his/her 5 senses into what they are exploring, and reacting
too. During my observation Baby M reacted to sights, sounds, and touching. According to the book
haptic perception is "perception of the properties of an object using touch" (Fogel, 2011. PG 152).
Baby M placed the balls and teethers directly in her mouth to get a better idea or perception of what
the toy was. Although she is at the age where she knew what each toy was she still explored it using
her mouth. Baby M also showed signs of auditory development by listening to what the caregiver
was saying to her and responding with positive emotions when told to do something.

Cormac McCarthy: Explorer of Humanity’s Core Essay
Literature has always attempted to explore the human psyche. Romantic works examine the emotion
behind attraction and betrayal, love and desire. Fantasy novels take the reader to an imaginary
world, filled with wonders. Gothic literature intertwines romance and horror, and often features the
supernatural. Southern Gothic writing explores the gothic within the more realistic bounds of
southern culture while revealing the grotesque––the base and broken nature of the human soul and
how society is easily susceptible to ruin, both spiritually and physically. As today's most important
Southern Gothic writer, Cormac McCarthy crafts works and themes which delve into the nature of
humanity, explore the depravity, futility, and, ultimately, reveal ... Show more content on

The tinker, as a conduit for McCarthy's thoughts, says that God most likely deserted humanity for
the evil it has wrought. The irony between God sending violence unto humans for committing
violence is McCarthy's way of saying that humanity was born from evil and dies from evil.
McCarthy's fictions are not farfetched versions of reality; they show how the world has become
numb to the effects of violence and evil. Culla and Rinthy in Outer Dark pass by acts of disgust and
gore and come out relatively unphased, a sign that the evils of humanity have become commonplace
in society (Hibbard 2). In the article "Further into Darkness," John Ditsky observes that McCarthy is
trying to show that evil is not only allowed by society, but in fact it is the fascination of society;
there is a subtle but seductive beauty with it (332). Ballard's territorial nature in Child of God and
the violence he commits on those who cross into his land is shocking to the reader but in fact
parallel to the strong Southern culture of libertarianism and independence

The Eugenics Movement By Sir Francis Galton
The phrase "designer baby" was not added to the dictionary until 2004, but the idea had existed in
the form of the eugenics movement since Sir Francis Galton published his book Hereditary Genius
in 1869. Galton's research suggested that intelligence is hereditary, and he believed that success is
due to superior qualities that were passed down generation through generation. His research further
suggested that personality traits and mental abilities were also hereditary (Plucker, 2013). Eugenics,
a term coined by Galton in 1883, advocated for human breeding restrictions so as to improve the
biological make–up of the human race (Steen, 1996). Technology since then has advanced greatly,
and designer babies are now a very real possibility. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
307). He also stated "...it seems highly probable that some blends of the human sub races are
eugenically admirable and others disastrous" (p. 307). At that time, interracial relationships were
looked down upon. Race was a large factor in eugenics, as white European and American people
were leading the movement. They believed that race determined intelligence. McDougall (1914)
professed "...the upper social strata are in the main natively superior in mental endowment than the
lower" (p.303). Not only did this prejudice lie in race, but social classes within a society were also
considered to be an indication of intelligence. Eugenics was not only a movement of the application
of psychology to procreation, but was also a largely social and political movement. One of the main
purposes of the eugenics movement was to attempt to control the level of intelligence in the human
race. This is not completely possible, however, as all genes are linked to other genes, and
intelligence is affected by many more than just the one gene (Agar, 2006). In contrast to Galton's
theory, intelligence is not actually completely hereditary. Between 47 and 58% of intelligence lies in
DNA, and the rest is based on environmental factors (Steen, 1996). Many types of intelligence tests
have been created to measure the level of intelligence in humans. Defining intelligence in itself is a
difficult task, as there are

The Needs of Our Society's Neglected Kids Discussed in...
In the book titled Finding fish: a memoir, the author addresses the need of our society's neglected
children to find love, safety and protection. Many children like Antwone are subjected to different
types of abuse such as: physical, emotional and sexual. Foster care was an option for Antwone.
Foster care is the placement for children outside the custody of their parents or legal guardians after
court finding that the children have been abused or neglected. The court may also find the child to
be a person in need of supervision or have committed delinquent acts. The foster care is a social
service system with many component parts and complex interrelationships between those parts

213). Physical abuse is the most common type of child maltreatment. Boys and girls are about
equally likely to be physically abused. Physical abuse include: hitting, kicking, shaking, throwing,
burning, stabbing or shocking the child (Downs, Moore and McFaden, 2009, pg. 211). Lastly,
according to Downs, Moore and McFadden sexual abuse is an "act of a person, adult or child, which
forces, coerces, or threatens a child to have any form of sexual contact or to engage in any type of
sexual activity at the perpetrator's direction" (2009,p214). The terms of "sexual abuse" encompasses
a wide range of behaviors which are the follow: fondling, making a child touch an adult's sexual
organs and penetrating a child's vagina or anus (Downs, Moore and McFaden, 2009, p.214). Among
the abuses Antwone was subjected to, he was a victim of repeated sexual abuse. He did not receive
adequate supervision and he was always hoping that someone would find out and stop the abuse.
Surprisingly, The Child and Family services Review (CFSR) report that "the child instances of child
maltreatment is less that one percent for children in out–of–home care" (Federal Resister, 2006,
p.s32980, as cited in Downs, Moore and McFadden, 2009, p.309). Downs, Moore, & McFadden

Premature Infancy Essay
Premature Infancy
Premature babies, otherwise known as preterm babies, or preemies, are babies that are born earlier
than the full–term of thirty–eight to forty–two weeks of pregnancy. These babies are generally born
between the twentieth and thirty–eighth week. Almost 250,000 babies, nearly seven percent of
newborns, are premature(Golant 4). Prematurity, even with all the advances in technology, is still a
major cause of fetal and neonatal death. Actually, around seventy– five percent of perinatal deaths
are due to a number of problems associated with prematurity(Freeman 232). Premature babies are
very weak and defenseless, and need to be hospitalized. One reason for this is that a baby may
become startled into shock ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not wearing clothing helps make it easier for the doctor to work with the baby and keep the skin's
stress levels to a minimum. Even though the parents may want to hold and cuddle their baby, it is
best for the child and the parents if they keep to a minimum the handling of a preemie.
Doctors are trying to figure out ways to prevent premature labor from occurring. Through a drug
called Ritodrive, doctors have been quite successful in prolonging the pregnancy until the thirty–
sixth week(Griesemer 15).
Although successful in many cases, doctors are still very skeptical on whether or not women should
take any form of drugs while they are pregnant. In the past, there was a belief that the placenta
protects the unborn baby from all drugs, bur just recently studies have shown that many drugs can
be passed from the mother to the child. Another reason which drugs are not regularly administered
to upcoming mothers is that it is very difficult to determine how drugs will actually act on the fetus,
since test results can vary so differently from person to person, and also because these results are
very unpredictable. For this reason, women are rarely prescribed drugs while pregnant, unless when
needed or under the care and supervision of their doctor.
Caring for a premature baby can be very tough for parents at times.
Since they are urged not to handle the baby much, it

Gender: A Socially Constructed Ideal Essay
Where does a boy learn to be a man and a girl learn to be a woman? If is impossible for one to
pinpoint the exact moment in time where they learned what it means to be a boy or a girl. The
reason? Gender roles are a result of constant exposure to gender socialization. From birth forward,
we become susceptible to society's opinion on what a male or female should consist of. The way we
dress, the way we act, the choices we make, and the way we interact with others can all be linked in
some way back to the gender roles present in our lives. While that may not seem like such a bad
thing, gender roles can prove to be quite detrimental to the growth and development of a child. This
is because gender roles provide stringent guidelines that one ... Show more content on

So the next logical question would be how does one acquire knowledge of the genders? Where does
it all begin? Since gender is something that is constantly learned throughout one's lifetime, I will
focus solely on the gender influence one is exposed to in early childhood. It starts with a simple
nursery rhyme: "What are little boys made of? Dirt and snails, and puppy dogs tails. That's what
little boys are made of! What are little girls made of? Sugar and spice, and everything nice. That's
what little girls are made of!" This particular saying has been around for ages, commonly known
and passed down through the generations. Although seemingly harmless, this saying proves to be
everything but. The "what little boys/girls are made of" nursery rhyme is a perfect example of what
perpetuates the inescapable gender roles in our society. Before a child is even born, parents already
have an interpretation of what their child will be like. A baby girl will be sweet, dainty, and like a
little princess. A baby boy will be rambunctious, strong–willed, and attracted to dirt. A majority of
expectant parents tend to decorate nurseries accordingly as well; lots of pink, frills, flowers, and
cuddly things for their future daughter. For a son, a plethora of blue, animals, trucks, and sports
memorabilia is the décor of choice. Without even realizing it, these parents are programming their
child to be a boy or girl before he or she has even taken their first

The Wild Childhood: Learning The Native Language
Learning The Native Language
Most of the child language acquisition theories all have the same general idea, that language is
acquired through repetition and imitation.
The behaviourist approach states 'that children learn to speak by imitating the language structures
they hear'. Covering both aspects of the statement at the beginning which is 'hearing English and
trying to speak it yourself are the only tools'.
The interactive approach states 'recent studies have shown the importance of interaction' which
again is the tools of listening and speaking in order to acquire the language.
All of these approaches support the statement at hand. However some approaches disagree with it all

He claims that if no language is learned before then, it can never be learned in a normal and fully
functional sense. This is known as the "Critical Period Hypothesis".
An interesting example of this is the case of Genie, otherwise known as "The Wild Child". A
thirteen–year–old victim of lifelong child abuse, Genie was discovered in her home on November
4th, 1970, strapped to a potty chair and wearing diapers. She appeared to be entirely without
language. Her father had judged her retarded at birth and had chosen to isolate her, and so she had
remained up until her discovery. It was an ideal opportunity to test the theory that a nurturing
environment could somehow make up for a total lack of language past the age of 12. Sadly, she was
unable to acquire language completely. Due to this and other complications, she eventually ended up
in an adult foster care home.
Once the child has began its basics of language acquisition it then requires a sufficient and constant
input from other more advanced language users (Adults) in order to grasp and work out the
regularities of that language.
There are also Pre–language stages. These pre–linguistic sounds which are made in the early stages
in the Childs language acquisition are simply called 'cooing' and 'babbling'. By roughly 4 to 6
months of age babies start to make many more

Analysis Of The Book ' World Record Hot Dog Eaters '
When I was given this assignment I was expecting to end up reading something a little difficult to
follow and full of bland material that was written as colorfully as possible, making reading a book
about economics bearable. This book was quit the opposite. The book did not consist of GDP,
exchange rates, economic trends, international stage, mixed capitalism or finance. Instead, the book
told stories of world record hot dog eaters, the similarities between famous musicians and kings,
self–driven vehicles, ping–pong competitions, babies bribed with candy, and the discovery of the
cause of ulcers. The entire book was based upon how we, as pieces of an economic system, can look
at the world and the problems in it from different perspectives. "Think Like a Freak" essentially tries
to teach the reader how to do just that; think like a freak. "What Does it Mean to Think Like a
Freak?" The beginning chapters in this book sets you up to have an open mind and ask questions
about societies perceptions v. reality. The authors challenge the way you think about things whose
answers are seemingly obvious. One of my favorite concepts of this book is that it tells you the truth
about people that society sometimes causes people not to admit to themselves. For instance, it is
sometimes harder to say "I don't know" when you really don 't know the answer to something than it
is to just give a false answer, although you may be well aware that your answer is not 100% correct.

Adoption: The Issue Of Abortion In The United States
Did you know that abortion is common for around 1 of every 3 women in the United States
(Camosy 17)? Abortion became a bigger problem in The United States in 1973 when it was made
legal. Roe v. Wade was a case in Texas where a woman named Norma McCorvey wanted to have an
abortion. She filed a lawsuit on behalf of herself and every other pregnant woman saying that it is an
"invasion of privacy"(Roe v. Wade, The Free Dictionary). In 1973, the Supreme Court had ruled that
the Texas law was unlawful. They allowed abortion to be legal, but it was too late because she had
already had her child two years beforehand (Roe v. Wade, The Free Dictionary). Since Roe v. Wade,
there have been around 55 million abortions. Twenty–one percent of pregnancies ... Show more

All of these things can happen to you just because you do not want to have a child. Women are
ruining their own lives. These women have the option to put their children up for adoption. Some
women who are pregnant because of rape want to have abortions because they do not want to live
with that thought for nine months. Some young girls that live in bad households will become
pregnant and not tell her parents. The father of the child could be her own brother or even her own
dad. These girls would be so frightened that they would try to get an illegal abortion, and even try to
abort the baby themselves, and suffer major health problems (McBride 43). Young girls would suffer
major problems just because they are too scared to tell their parents. Some effects from 2 to 4 weeks
after an abortion include cramping, nausea, vomiting, and heavy bleeding. Long–term, abortions can
give you infections, damage your cervix, or organs, and even kill you. These women and girls may
want to have an abortion, because seeing the child would bring back all those memories and create a
terrible experience, but this is not a reason for causing this much damage to yourself. These women
still have the opportunity of adoption for their children and giving them a life instead of killing
them, but they often choose the wrong path. Their reason for not putting the baby up for adoption is
because they don't want to think about their child being raised by someone else. They would kill
their child and cause their bodies damage in the future, rather than let them live. Abortion causes
many problems in the future of the mother, physically and mentally. Many women are unaware of
these risks and dangers before they make this wrong, unchangeable

Essay on Building a Case against Abortion
More than 1.21 million cases of a single form of murder are uninvestigated in the United States
every year. For example, Gianna, a seven and a half month old girl, was poisoned when a doctor
snuck a solution of concentrated salt into her food; Gianna suffered from dehydration, a brain
hemorrhage, convulsions, and burnt skin. Gianna endured this tragic ordeal before she even took her
first breath of air. Gianna's mother had tried to abort her, but she had survived. If this would have
happened to Gianna after her birth, it would have been considered attempted murder. Why, then, is
abortion considered acceptable? Today, we will address the alternatives to abortion and the

A third common method of abortion is dilation and evacuation, a procedure conducted in the second
trimester ("Methods of Abortion"). By the sixth month of pregnancy, an unborn baby can resemble
his or her parents, dream, hear the mother's heartbeat and external noise, be felt by the mother, and
survive after birth ("Baby Developmental Facts"). However, this life is terminated when a doctor
grabs the baby's arms and legs with forceps, tears the baby apart piece by piece, and crushes the
baby's skull. A fourth technique used for abortion is a saline injection, otherwise known as salt
poisoning; this method has been used to kill Gianna and countless other babies in the second and
third trimesters("Methods of Abortion"). During the third trimester, a baby can recognize his or her
mother's voice and use four out of the five senses ("Baby Developmental Facts"). As in Gianna's
case, a doctor inserts a needle containing concentrated salt into the mother's womb and injects the
substance into the amniotic fluid. A baby breathes and swallows the salt; this causes salt poisoning,
severe dehydration, a brain hemorrhage, and convulsions. In the course of an hour, the baby's skin
deteriorates, causing immense pain and eventually death; one to two days later, the mother delivers a
dead baby. Why would anyone put their own child through this kind of torture? What has any

The Spirit Catches You And You Fall Down By Anne Fadiman...
I remember myself traveling away from my country at the age of twenty–one. Although I was very
excited about the idea of venturing to a new place, I also felt the fear and sadness of separating from
my family. As soon as I arrived in America, I was assisted to my residence; a single room provided
for the nurses and the resident 's doctor at the hospital. Alone in my room and unable to go to sleep,
I could hear the echo of the neighbors conversation yet the isolation and helplessness being in a
foreign country was overwhelming at that time. While most of my colleagues and myself who
migrated to the United States were able to understand and speak the language, the cultural
differences perpetuate the feeling of anxiety. Now think about those migrants who could not speak
and understand the language, how do you think they would feel living in an unfamiliar place like
America? The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman, dare us to ponder what we

people practice or observe healing ritual that is entirely atypical to the Western practice of medicine.

If you ask all the parents in the world about the cutest moment of their baby, the most common

There are serious health problems caused by sleep deprivation (Perillo, 1994). In children and young
adults, hormones which trigger and support growth are released during sleep. These hormones help
strengthen our muscles as well as repairing our tissue cells. When one is deprived of sleep,
especially kids, their brain stops functioning. This affects their emotional state and abilities. Severe
chronic deprivation can interfere with children's balance. Sleep deprivation also causes production
of hormones that causes stress to humans, similarly, sleep deprivation lowers hormone called leptin.
This can affect your appetite and general taste for food. Deprivation of sleep also lowers our
immune system which can make us vulnerable to respiratory problems as well as worsen lung
conditions. It therefore advised to have enough sleep in order to maintain body and shape as well
emotions imbalances. Thus, treating sleep problems may have the added benefit of reducing other
behavior problems and improving school performance. In addition, child sleep problems may cause
problems for parents that lead to marital difficulties, and may be a risk factor for abuse (Kerr &
Jowett, 1994). Studies show that couples having problems in their marriages may have babies who
are affected with sleeping disorders. It is further elaborated that marital problems when the baby was

Each person has their own view concerning abortion, but the majority of people have little
knowledge about abortion. Abortion in teens is increasing every year, since morality concerns no
longer seem to carry much weight with teens. There are many medical hazards associated with an

fetus. The legalization of abortions occurred in 1973 after the Roe v. Wade case was won by Roe1 .
Norma McCorrey, ?Jane Roe,? claimed to have been raped and filed a lawsuit against Dallas County

The right to life of neither the mother or the fetus can take precedence over that of the other
(Callahan 439). The fetus contains the same value as its mother in the ?Human Life Amendment.?
This amendment conflicts with many moral issues since many religions feel that if a mother?s life is
in danger of dying then the child should be aborted causing the mother to have precedence over the
fetus. The ?Human Life Amendment? also states that abortion under any and all circumstances
would be considered murder. Even to preserve the life of a mother or in the case of rape or incest
abortion would be against the law of the land (Radl 90–91). If the people voted on this amendment it
would be thrown out . There is only a very small number of people who support the passing of the ?
Human Life Amendment.? Only the mother?s life should be weighed against the child?s. Mostly
because the mother has experienced life and the child has not. In society people consider it cruel to
kill a fetus at seven months old, but they consider it moral to kill a fetus at only two months
(Mensch and Freeman 44). There is not the least bit of difference between a two month old fetus;
and a seven month old fetus, each is a living human life and has the same exact value. All embryos
are babies and all babies have a right to live. Some people feel that the fourth amendment excludes
the protective rights of killing a fetus

Birthing Justice : Black Women, Pregnancy And Childbirth,...
In the US, black women are over three times more likely to die from maternally related
complications than white women, and their babies are less likely to survive their first year (Oparah
& Bonparte, 2015). Birthing Justice: Black Women, Pregnancy and Childbirth, edited by Julia
Chineyere Oparah and Alicia D. Bonaparte tells the stories, experiences, oppression, and subjection
of black women in the maternal health care system. Each chapter in the book explained a certain key
point in the experience of black women and the health care system. In the following, I will discuss
how the medical industrial complex or the introduction of medical treatments has not only stripped
women of color, trans women, poor and immigrant women of their autonomy, but has sustained the
hierarchy of patriarchy in the health system. The medical industrial complex (MIC) holds many
influences in the care of women, especially poor marginalized women. MIC is simply a platform of
the network among corporations that supply health care services and products to make money.
Oparah and Bonaparte explain how the individual's ability to pay determines the quality of care they
receive (Oparah & Bonaparte, 2015, pg. 4). In relations to birthing, hospitals aren't a place for an
intimate connection between a woman that's about to give birth and their newborns. It's more of a
time efficiency center where doctors (mainly white men) would purposely perform cesarean
deliveries to not only save time, but to make a

Making the Pre-School Setting a Supportive and Safe...
Cache Level 3 Diploma in Pre–school Practice Core unit 3 – Making the pre–school setting a
supportive and safe environment. The 1981 Warnock Report and Education Act highlighted the
concept of children having special educational needs. This means each setting needs to have an
inclusion policy that states that all children and their parents are included regardless of there race,
religion or disability. Our admissions policy reflects this. The UN Convention on the rights of the
child (1989) added to the Warnock Report by stating that disabled children have the right to be
included in mainstream education, allowing the child to achieve the fullest possible social

The home corner can also be a good place to promote anti–biased attitudes as it lends its self to a
variety of different cultural cooking and house keeping methods, as does the dressing up box. It is
also important to consider the needs of all the children when doing your planning to ensure that the
activities are suitable. Prejudice: An attitude, opinion, or feeling formed without adequate prior
knowledge, thought ,or reason. Prejudice can be prejudgment for or against any person, group, or
sex. (Dermon–Sparks and the A.B.C Task Force, 2000 p10). Each setting should have and
Inclusion/anti–discrimination policy in which the procedures of the settings are clearly written down
for staff to follow. It is important to have carefully written policies in place in our settings as this not
only conforms to current legislation (Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage),
but also makes sure that staff know what to do in any given situation and helps us to provide a safe
and healthy environment for all the children in our care. Policies to be included would be:– A Heath
and Hygiene policy, which would detail such things as actions to be taken when dealing with body
fluids, and hand washing procedures. A Food Handling Policy which would deal with all aspects of
food hygiene and preparation, and provision for such things as fresh drinking water being available

Spock's Psychological Analysis
They will also be inconsiderate of others' feelings.
However, a child who has successfully completed this stage will be characterized as having used
proper toilet training techniques throughout toilet training years and will successfully move on to the
next stage of Freud's psychosexual developmental stages. Although the anal stage seems to be about
proper toilet training, it is also about controlling behaviours and urges. A child needs to learn certain
boundaries when he or she is young, so that in the future, there will not be contention regarding
what is overstepping the boundaries. I wish I could go on discussing this stage from the cognitive
point of view, but I will leave it up to you to learn more about it on the Internet.

Unfortunately, Spock's guide opened a Pandora's Box of social and personal troubles as the children
trained under his advice grew into adulthood. As the article says, the first evil to fly out into the
unsuspecting post–war society was fear – parental fear – and this despite the reassuring words at the
beginning of the book advising parents to "Trust yourself. You know more than you think you do."
However, despite these reassuring words, Spock went on to displace parents' confidence by telling
them what they should do. By the end of his career he admitted, that he had seen this fear overtake,
or indeed, overwhelm parents in America, and through his influence, through his opening of
"Pandora's Box," the same fear came to parents in many other nations. He identified several times in
his mature years what his efforts had set loose, but he knew it could not be recalled.
As mentioned above, in his mature years he admitted that his effort had set loose, but there was
nothing he could do about it. In 1967 he said

Erikson’s Eight Stages of Development and Occupational...
Erik Erikson was one the founding figures in naming the human's developmental stages. He
stemmed his research off of his own life experiences. Today we use his framework for helping
diagnose those with injuries with the best treatment possible. He was the person who coined the
term "identity crisis" that we so often hear of today. In this paper I will first describe Erikson's life
and all his research, and then I will relate his work to occupational therapy.
Biography
Erik Erikson was born on June 15, 1902 in Frankfurt, Germany. According to his obituary that
appeared in The New York Times, his parents were separated before he was born due to the fact that
he was the result of an affair. He never met his birth father. His mother was ... Show more content on

This stage occurs within the first year of life and when the baby begins to develop feelings for its
primary caregiver. If the baby receives consistent care and feels that their caregiver is reliable, then
they will be able to feel secure. Succession of this stage helps the baby develop a sense of hope. By
developing hope, the baby can stay positive whenever a crisis happens in their life. If the baby fails
to develop this sense of hope, then the baby will learn to sense fear throughout their life. This type
of fear will lead the baby to live a life full of insecurities and anxiety (McLeod, 2008). The second
stage is Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt. This is when the child is developing its physical
characteristics and begins moving around more. This stage occurs between the ages of 18 months
and three years old. During this stage, the child will start to assert their independence by picking out
what clothes they are going to wear or what they are going to eat, etc. As they begin to do things on
their own they discover that they have skills, such as tying their shoes or putting their toys together,
etc. According to Erikson, it is critical that the parents at this time allow their child to explore the
world and figure out their limits with encouragement and support them when they inevitably fail.
During this crucial time, the parent must not intervene too much in their child's life and allow the
child to make their own decisions

I Completely Seduced ] Is A Free Form Poem
[completely seduced] is a free form poem focusing on the efforts and transformative process of
motherhood. Brandt utilizes literary elements such as structure and space to directly address an
impacting message to her readers. The integration of transformation in [completely seduced]
strongly influences a connection between reader and speaker by indulging in the aspects and theme
of a mother's unconditional love. Through literary elements and a strong globally experienced
theme, Di Brandt creates a powerfully raw message about the effects of being a mother and raising a
child.

The story describes a change in everyday life following motherhood, as well as the seductive
pleasure found in providing for, caring for, and sacrificing for a little one–– all to see yourself: "in
the dark pool / of your baby's eyes" (Brandt, 13/14).
The spacing and structure of the poem is set up to allow flow and momentum in the poem and its
narrative. The speaker's voice is present with emotion as emphasised in a natural rhythm of thought
offering an honest and bare interpretation of motherhood. The open "blank space" of the poem
encourages a calm and breathy atmosphere, fulfilling a mood of tranquility and bliss. Each stanza is
short with a couple quick fragmented thoughts before closing each section with the power of a
single word. Each stanza breaks apart a separate thought filled with a loving passion the speaker
uses to stress the beauty, wonder, and over–flowing love present in motherhood. To better the
structure, the poem itself is broken into three parts, each representing a stage of motherhood. The
first segment of motherhood that is represented is during the moments while the baby is still in the
womb and the mother waits in anticipation for the baby to arrive. This "honeymoon" phase is
expressed with a tone filtered through a perception of rose–coloured glasses and excitement as the
mother is in utter bliss to carry a life into the world. The

Aristotle On Abortion
Human beings are becoming more and more immoral by determining the destiny of unborn
"children" nowadays. These children cannot breathe, and cannot live without the support from their
mothers to stay alive. It may be really hard to identify them as a person, either. However, no power
in this world should be cruel enough to terminate the life of an unborn, innocent child, who is unable
to protect itself. Even under extreme circumstances where the child is seen as an unwanted object,
nobody has the right to determine the destiny of another individual unless that baby becomes a
criminal (!). Even rape should not be an excuse for the abortion of a child because that child does
not have to pay the consequences of his father's crime with its own ... Show more content on

Under the circumstances such as rape, no one can suggest that the woman is facing an injustice
situation, and it is her right to express her negative feelings about what happened. On the other hand,
the baby cannot be held accountable for what happened to its mother. In case the baby is killed, this
is more injustice for the baby. The gray line of abortion under this circumstance includes a "double
injustice". In this dilemma, the critical part is to decide which side weighs more. In other words, if
we make a calculation, the moral justification of making the mother and/or the baby happy should
result with the highest value. That determines the best way to deal with the gray line.(mary

Child Abuse Is Not Gone Away
"Every five minutes, somewhere in the world, a child dies from violence. Millions more are in
danger of physical, emotional (neglect) and sexual abuse that could destroy their childhoods
forever" (Beckham). Sadly, this is not a shocking fact, because child abuse is a very big issue in our
world. The problem with child abuse and neglect is that someone is harming a child, most likely
their own, and they don't care about it. In the novel Frankenstein, Shelley argues that child abuse
and neglect are unethical and that no one should be abused. This concept is scattered all over the
book, because throughout the whole story, Victor is running from or yelling at his monster. Shelley's
argument is still valid today because child abuse has not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to ChildLife, a child abuse hotline in Pennsylvania, there were more than 400 child
deaths due to abuse between 2010 and 2014, and approximately 29,273 cases of abuse in the year in
2014 (Routh).
One aspect of child abuse that makes it so bad is that people who are guilty of child abuse do not
always do it on purposefully. For example, in July of 2011, Jaren Hare, age 21, was charged with
manslaughter, third–degree murder and child neglect. Her 2 year old daughter had been killed by
their python. According to the St. Petersburg Times, the snake was underfed, and when it escaped
from the cage, was found in the morning wrapped around the baby. When Ms. Hare's boyfriend
found the lifeless child, there were fang marks on her arms and forehead (Anton). This is seen as
unethical because we could argue if this is or is not the mother's fault since she had a python in the
same house as a baby. Even though the mother didn't put the python in the crib with the baby, the
very fact that she left a baby unsupervised counts as neglect and abuse. Now she has to face the
consequence of losing her child.
Another sad aspect about child abuse is that the people who commit child abuse are not always the
parents. In this instance, the mothers of several children gave permission for two strangers

Essay on The Morality of Abortion and Surrogacy
The Morality of Abortion and Surrogacy
It is said that, the basic principle of such tradition is that humans communicate through symbols,
which are a common currency through which a sense of self is created through interaction with
others. Mead's theory neatly avoids the trap of positing a sense of self that is constructed entirely
through symbols and society by making a distinction between two different selves: "I" which is the
unsocialized self; the font of individual desires and needs, and "me," the socialized self, the self
within society. (p. 184) Elliot rightly identifies the flaws of symbolic interactionism: namely, the
obsession with rationalism and the wholesale disavowal of the emotional aspects of the self. The ...

Society loses minds and the ideas they would have, as well as the resources that are siphoned off in
order to kill and process them. But the murdered lose the opportunity to live and enjoy life, and all
that living entails. Also, many have to bear the pain of being burned to death by saline solution or
chopped up into pieces by sharp instruments, and would hardly be consoled by the fact that their
remains will go to benefit medical science or rent seekers. The key element is that an innocent life
has been taken that might have developed into the next Einstein, Edison, Salk, Jefferson, or
Beethoven. (1970)
Some believe that even though there may be life, or potential life, or however one wants to refer to
the fetus, that by denying a woman the right to an abortion is denying her control of her body. Being
a woman myself, I am obviously against people trying to control women or their bodies. But the
fetus is a completely separate life from the woman. It has a completely different blood type and
genetic code; it is not just part of the mother's body. It is temporarily residing there, and birth is just
the change of residence from an already living, active person. Just because the unborn is dependent
on the mother for nine months, does that give anyone the right to choose to end its life?
Being dependent on others should not deprive a helpless human being the fundamental right to live,
as we do not base humanness on whether another person is

Mummy Ish Influence On Nora
Nora wanting to feel held Nora loves attention. She always says something or acts in a manner that
aims at attracting other people's attention, especially her educators. Sometimes she fails to gain the
attention of her intended audience. When this occurs, she goes into a freezing mode for a few
seconds. Her freezing mode is characterized by sticking to the same position where she said or did
something for a few seconds hoping that somebody would respond to her "messages". An example
of such an occurrence (freezing mode) was on 1st January 2014, when Nora was three years old.

When Sabrina enters the room, Nora forgets about the pin because she feels held by Sabrina.
Winnicott tackles this concept of feeling held in his theories. He argues that the concept of feeling
held means that a child feels safe and all her needs can be met within her environment. He writes,
"the holding environment... has as its main function the reduction to a minimum of impingements to
which the infant must react with resultant annihilation of personal being" (Winnicott, 1960: 47).
Furthermore, Winnicott suggests that the relationship that a child forms with the mother during her
pre–kindergarten period results in the child developing a positive internal environment. This positive
internal environment is what makes the child survive when her external environment changes. This
is why the child is able to sense the loss of a mother, when left in the Kindergarten, and develop a
relationship with another person or object that provides her the safety and stability of her

and actions and find peek–a–boo games amusing. Imitation increases and babies can also drink from

children to de–centre as they explore how others might feel, think or act. They become aware of

pregnant, in the first phase of latent labor, dilated to 3 cm, 70% effaced, –3 station and her
contractions were four minutes apart. She had a history of asthma, bipolar depression, anxiety,

This is precisely the life of individuals in pastoral societies where food is obtained by raising and
taking care of domesticated animals. An important element in Bayar's upbringing is the fact that for
the most part, he remains tightly swaddled in a blanket resting atop a carpet covered bed. His older
brother sleeps on the floor beneath. For what seems like a good portion of Bayar's first year, he is
left to observe family life going on around him. Again, the mother is the primary caregiver for the
children even though she is also involved in the upkeep of the animals on the farm. The father is
documented in sparse interactions like when he sits over Bayar on the bed and waves a rattle in his
face. And while the hut the family resides in appears to be hand crafted, the home does contain
furniture, cooking devices, electricity and there is also a large satellite out front. Bayar is bathed in a
pail in the living room and at one point; the mother squirts breast milk in his face and wipes him
down with a cloth. As Bayar begins to crawl and subsequently walk, he and his older sibling have
free reign of the hut and the land surrounding. Domesticated animals share the same freedom as a

family" (82). This is a quote from John and he quite literally shows how he will not accept a negro
into his family and he puts race as a major conflict in their marriage. However, when it comes to
Edna and Leonce it is marriage itself that is the conflict. Race is a martial conflict in Clare's
marriage and Chopin touches up on the marital conflict of race in another one of her novels
Desiree's baby. The fear of having a dark child in their marriage is a reoccurring theme in both
Desiree's baby and Passing. Although, in Passing they have a faired skin baby and Clare relieves
stress, it isn't the same luck in Desiree's baby. In Desiree's baby it shows what's happens when you
have a dark skinned child. The mother is shunned by her husband and she goes through the pain of
being colored. While Desiree's baby shows different similarities with The Awakening. They show
similarities in the failing of their marriages instead of the conflict. The disconnect between two
lovers shown between Edna and Leonce resembles the loss love in Desiree's

The Role Of Marriage In The Elizabethan Era
In the Elizabethan Era, the everyday life was very different than it is today. As a teenager, people
were often treated unfair depending on their wealth and gender. Marriages, death, and childhood all
had unique, different characteristics that contributed to the daily life of the youth during the
Elizabethan Era. Marriage was essential in the Elizabethan Era. For instance, women were expected
at a fairly young age, around twenty–one years old, to marry. Men would often speak of their wives
as children, and like they were his property (Wilson 126). In a marriage, love wasn't the concern or
significant, but it may come later in the marriage. Instead, it was arranged so that both families
would profit from it (Mahabal). If one chooses not to marry, he or she were thought to be witches by
their neighbors (Alchin). According to the book Elizabethan's London, "An unmarried woman
wasn't even allowed to enter the birthing chamber when a friend was giving birth" (Picard 182). This
shows how unfairly a woman would be treated if she was single. ... Show more content on

Sense there was not much medical understanding at the time, the mortality rate for women and
babies was excessive. Under those circumstances, women even often made prearrangement for child
care in case they did not make it through childbirth (Alchin). Out of every 100 babies, only seventy
would survive to their first birthday, and less than half would see their fifth birthday (Picard 182).
For the most part, as a girl there were not a lot of opportunities, and only boys, who could afford, it
went to school (Mahabal).Childhood was short for boys, and at the age of eleven they are
distinguished as men (Picard 182). The eldest son would always inherit belongs and ownership,
even if he had an older sister (Secara). Given these points, girls were not treated

Uncle Toms Cabin Quotes
Daniela Islas In" Uncle Tom's Cabin," Harriet Beecher Stowe defines slavery as inhumane and
unjust, in her book she provides real life stories of how faith, sacrifice, and cruelty, come together to
demonstrate a real life vision of the terrible systems of slavery and how they affected many people.
Stowe wrote this book with the solemn purpose of informing future readers about the particular
ways of slavery and how it associated with poor treatment. In the format she composes the book, she
entitles to several examples at a time in which slavery is seen to take over people's lives whether
good or bad. In the book, Stow refers to faith as one of the very few things African Americans
trusted upon and uses it as a central point in her book. For example, Tom was a very faithful man
who never did anything that would go against his faith. After he was beat nearly to death by Mr.
Legree's servants he refuged under his strong faith and pardon all those who hurt him and only
wished good in God's land. Tom is used as a very symbolic figure in the book because of his sincere
dedication to his faith. In addition, Stow also introduces us to Evangeline, a young girl whose faith
only allows her to see the good on everyone's eyes. In a very disastrous moment Topsy reveals out
of control and cannot be brought into reason, Topsy is described as a character who lacks love and
attention. Eva on the other hand is identified as unprejudiced and sees everyone black and white as
equals, her

What Makes a Good Parent
To my mind, the right answer to the question "What makes a good parent" is not easily obtainable.
You should spend a lot of time in contemplation before reaching to it. And still there is no guarantee
that finally you will get it.
Since many people have different opinions on raising a child there may be thousands absolutely
different answers to one and the same question, a rather tricky one, I would say.
To tell you the truth, after I asked myself the same question, several things went through my mind.
What kind of parent will I be? How will I raise a child? Can I be a good parent? What turns ordinary
people into good parents? Panic overtook me and I felt an overwhelming desire to rush to the local
bookstore to purchase loads of parenting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, this is where common sense takes over. There will be things about the way we were raised
that we liked and disliked. The areas that we did not like about the way we were raised can be turned
around when we raise our own children. This is how, I think, we can develop into a good parent.
Right now I would like to give some tips on how to become a good, loving parent. To tell you the
truth, I am a little bit afraid to sound superficial, as I am not a parent yet. But, from another side, I
had enough experience of being a child. So, now when I am in my early twenties I can evaluate the
way I was brought up by my parents. It is true, the older we are – the more we can understand our
parents. Well, let's pass on to the tips:
Recognize your child for the individual that they are. No two children are alike, and even though
they may resemble you, they are not you. You may have a child that loves sports and one that can't
stand to be outdoors. We should consider the individuality of each child as a blessing and pursue
ways to expand on that.
Discipline your child. That is not to say that you have to spank your child or beat them unmercifully.
Choose the method that works best for your child. You are the adult in your relationship and should
be the master manipulator.
Be involved in the schooling. Ask questions regarding how your child

Hills Like White Elephants Essay
Hemingway's 'Hills Like White Elephants'
From the beginning of Hemingway's "Hills Like White Elephants", Jig has been a character of
mystery, even until the very end of the short story. During the American's and Jig's whole
conversation, it seemed as though everything was uneasy; and that's because it was. The whole text
was a conversation about the American wanting Jig to abort her baby during a time when abortion
was still fairly new.
'Hills Like White Elephants' was published in the year of 1927, a few years after the novel The
Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald was published. It was known in the beginning of the
1900's, marriages were not taken seriously as they should have been in present time and during
novel. Usually, the husbands would be out late hours of the night doing whatever they wanted and
sometimes, rarely, so would some wives. In The Great Gatsby, Tom was cheating on Daisy with
Myrtle, who was also cheating on her husband while Daisy was also cheating on Tom with Gatsby.
The characters seemed to have everything they ever want and needed, but were not satisfied with
their love lives. They were all sharing each other and didn't know it but did suspect something was
going on. Jig could have been an unmarried women that wanted to be free and have fun unlike the
married women that could not or just not having a single care in the world.
At one point in the short story, The American sits quietly after jig begs him to stop talking about the
abortion,

Summary Of Theories Of Relativity By Barbara Haworth-Attard

  • 1. Summary Of Theories Of Relativity By Barbara Haworth-Attard Homelessness is an issue that has been affecting almost every part of the world in one way or the other for as long as humanity can remember. There has always been a group of people that are considered to be lesser than the average that struggle every day to obtain the basic human needs such as food, shelter, clothing etc. The book "Theories of Relativity" by Barbara Haworth–Attard is an excellent depiction of how numerous amounts of young teens continue to struggle to get by on the street every day and gives a great point of view from their side. Barbara Haworth–Attard's main focus in this book was to destroy the stigmas that are attached to the homeless youth by giving the general population a chance to understand the story from their side, ... During the time that Dylan was at the library and twitch came up to him in order to greet him, Dylan thought, "there is something seriously wrong with twitch, medically wrong. He is never still" (Hawarth– Attard, 21). Not being able to stay still and being abnormally thin are common side effects of drugs that are commonly sold on the streets such as heroin, weed etc. Twitch's addiction to these drugs has caused him to to lose the sense of reality when it comes to finding a way of leaving the streets and getting a job. His is unable to maintain himself and act normal, which may become a huge problem when it comes to finding a job for himself in the future. Furthermore, later on in the novel, it was introduced that Twitch was extremely sick and was admitted to the hospital. When Ainsley was telling Dylan about Twitch, she said "in the hospital. He's sick with pneumonia and hapitas. They're not sure if he is going to pull through" (Haworth–Attard, 212). Twitch's addictions had caused him to get extremely sick and him not having enough money for treatment before, he had to be admitted in order to fight for life and death. • 3. Socioeconomic Status In Adolescence There are many factors that can impact different types of development throughout conception to adolescence. One of the major factors is socioeconomic status. In a study, adolescents with a low socioeconomic status are more likely to become teenage parents than people in other classes. With a low SES, teen mothers engage more in risky behaviors such as drinking and smoking, while also not being well informed which can lead to them not getting the prenatal care they need. The result is infants born with birth complications, such as low birth weight and preterm. Within a low SES, adolescent parents know less about child development, which is why they have extremely high expectations of their infants, perceive their babies as more difficult, interact less with them, and more often engage in child abuse. Adolescent parents in a higher SES are less common, but typically they have a greater access to medical attention and a greater support system. However, adolescents in a high SES may have permissive or uninvolved parents. This may result in the teenager acting out to try and get attention, which can result in risky behavior. These children also have a greater chance of anxiety disorders from the added stress of trying to maintain a good image and impress their parents. Typically infants born into a low SES do not receive the care they deserve. During the fetal stage, they are more exposed to teratogens which can lead to greater health risks. These health risks may not be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

At birth is the point when the strongest attachment bonds form and parents strive to meet their baby's every need. As the child gets older i.e. around two years old the relationship as parents begins to change they start educating their children through discipline etc. When setting boundaries for discipline rules are implemented. The rules provide children with the freedom to express themselves within certain boundaries enabling them to learn and develop effectively. It is commonly believed that dropping levels of oestrogen and progesterone trigger the depression that many new mothers feel. One part of parent of parent hood which can become frustrating is that everyone becomes an expert. The problem with this is that you feel what you are doing is wrong as opinions often conflict with each other and in most cases many opinions are old wives tales. Thankfully in my experience my mother in–law is a midwife and she was able to tell us what current opinion and research suggest is best but explained all is at own discretion. On the other side negative feelings can arise towards the baby due to complete overwhelming experience and at this point having the ability and awareness that there are people to speak to in order to ease the load and help with this and that its common. The most common change is that occurs even with the most confident of people is a Fear and/or feelings of incompetence. New parents don't automatically know how to care for their babies. They should try not to worry if they feel like they don't know what they're doing. Parenting takes lots of practice. Parents learn as they go and can't expect to perform perfectly from the beginning. • 9. My Observation At Oakwood Methodist Preschool I conducted my observation at Oakwood Methodist Preschool on May 9, 2016 at 9:30 in the morning and 3:00 in the afternoon. The child I observed was a 16–month old female that I did have previously relations too. I use to work at Oakwood Methodist as an Extended Care Teacher. I use to care for Baby M in the infant room. During the observation there were two teachers, and 7 infants. The room that the observation took place in had many toys such as: balls, bouncers, walkers, rattles, and soft plush books. There was also a play mat where all the toys were, and two rocking chairs in the room. During this observation I focused on 6 different developmental domains. In my paper I am going to discuss perception, motor skills, cognitive ability, communication/language, social skills, and emotions. Perception is how the infant incorporates his/her 5 senses into what they are exploring, and reacting too. During my observation Baby M reacted to sights, sounds, and touching. According to the book haptic perception is "perception of the properties of an object using touch" (Fogel, 2011. PG 152). Baby M placed the balls and teethers directly in her mouth to get a better idea or perception of what the toy was. Although she is at the age where she knew what each toy was she still explored it using her mouth. Baby M also showed signs of auditory development by listening to what the caregiver was saying to her and responding with positive emotions when told to do something. The second domain ... • 11. Cormac McCarthy: Explorer of Humanity’s Core Essay Literature has always attempted to explore the human psyche. Romantic works examine the emotion behind attraction and betrayal, love and desire. Fantasy novels take the reader to an imaginary world, filled with wonders. Gothic literature intertwines romance and horror, and often features the supernatural. Southern Gothic writing explores the gothic within the more realistic bounds of southern culture while revealing the grotesque––the base and broken nature of the human soul and how society is easily susceptible to ruin, both spiritually and physically. As today's most important Southern Gothic writer, Cormac McCarthy crafts works and themes which delve into the nature of humanity, explore the depravity, futility, and, ultimately, reveal ... The irony between God sending violence unto humans for committing violence is McCarthy's way of saying that humanity was born from evil and dies from evil. McCarthy's fictions are not farfetched versions of reality; they show how the world has become numb to the effects of violence and evil. Culla and Rinthy in Outer Dark pass by acts of disgust and gore and come out relatively unphased, a sign that the evils of humanity have become commonplace in society (Hibbard 2). In the article "Further into Darkness," John Ditsky observes that McCarthy is trying to show that evil is not only allowed by society, but in fact it is the fascination of society; there is a subtle but seductive beauty with it (332). Ballard's territorial nature in Child of God and the violence he commits on those who cross into his land is shocking to the reader but in fact parallel to the strong Southern culture of libertarianism and independence ... • 13. The Eugenics Movement By Sir Francis Galton The phrase "designer baby" was not added to the dictionary until 2004, but the idea had existed in the form of the eugenics movement since Sir Francis Galton published his book Hereditary Genius in 1869. Galton's research suggested that intelligence is hereditary, and he believed that success is due to superior qualities that were passed down generation through generation. His research further suggested that personality traits and mental abilities were also hereditary (Plucker, 2013). Eugenics, a term coined by Galton in 1883, advocated for human breeding restrictions so as to improve the biological make–up of the human race (Steen, 1996). Technology since then has advanced greatly, and designer babies are now a very real possibility. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 307). He also stated "...it seems highly probable that some blends of the human sub races are eugenically admirable and others disastrous" (p. 307). At that time, interracial relationships were looked down upon. Race was a large factor in eugenics, as white European and American people were leading the movement. They believed that race determined intelligence. McDougall (1914) professed "...the upper social strata are in the main natively superior in mental endowment than the lower" (p.303). Not only did this prejudice lie in race, but social classes within a society were also considered to be an indication of intelligence. Eugenics was not only a movement of the application of psychology to procreation, but was also a largely social and political movement. One of the main purposes of the eugenics movement was to attempt to control the level of intelligence in the human race. This is not completely possible, however, as all genes are linked to other genes, and intelligence is affected by many more than just the one gene (Agar, 2006). In contrast to Galton's theory, intelligence is not actually completely hereditary. Between 47 and 58% of intelligence lies in DNA, and the rest is based on environmental factors (Steen, 1996). Many types of intelligence tests have been created to measure the level of intelligence in humans. Defining intelligence in itself is a difficult task, as there are ... In the book titled Finding fish: a memoir, the author addresses the need of our society's neglected children to find love, safety and protection. Many children like Antwone are subjected to different types of abuse such as: physical, emotional and sexual. Foster care was an option for Antwone. Foster care is the placement for children outside the custody of their parents or legal guardians after court finding that the children have been abused or neglected. The court may also find the child to be a person in need of supervision or have committed delinquent acts. Physical abuse include: hitting, kicking, shaking, throwing, burning, stabbing or shocking the child (Downs, Moore and McFaden, 2009, pg. 211). Lastly, according to Downs, Moore and McFadden sexual abuse is an "act of a person, adult or child, which forces, coerces, or threatens a child to have any form of sexual contact or to engage in any type of sexual activity at the perpetrator's direction" (2009,p214). Among the abuses Antwone was subjected to, he was a victim of repeated sexual abuse. He did not receive adequate supervision and he was always hoping that someone would find out and stop the abuse. Premature Infancy Essay Premature Infancy Premature babies, otherwise known as preterm babies, or preemies, are babies that are born earlier than the full–term of thirty–eight to forty–two weeks of pregnancy. These babies are generally born between the twentieth and thirty–eighth week. Almost 250,000 babies, nearly seven percent of newborns, are premature(Golant 4). Prematurity, even with all the advances in technology, is still a major cause of fetal and neonatal death. Doctors are trying to figure out ways to prevent premature labor from occurring. Through a drug called Ritodrive, doctors have been quite successful in prolonging the pregnancy until the thirty– sixth week(Griesemer 15). Although successful in many cases, doctors are still very skeptical on whether or not women should take any form of drugs while they are pregnant. In the past, there was a belief that the placenta protects the unborn baby from all drugs, bur just recently studies have shown that many drugs can be passed from the mother to the child. Another reason which drugs are not regularly administered to upcoming mothers is that it is very difficult to determine how drugs will actually act on the fetus, since test results can vary so differently from person to person, and also because these results are very unpredictable. For this reason, women are rarely prescribed drugs while pregnant, unless when needed or under the care and supervision of their doctor. If is impossible for one to pinpoint the exact moment in time where they learned what it means to be a boy or a girl. The reason? Gender roles are a result of constant exposure to gender socialization. From birth forward, we become susceptible to society's opinion on what a male or female should consist of. The way we dress, the way we act, the choices we make, and the way we interact with others can all be linked in some way back to the gender roles present in our lives. While that may not seem like such a bad thing, gender roles can prove to be quite detrimental to the growth and development of a child. This is because gender roles provide stringent guidelines that one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So the next logical question would be how does one acquire knowledge of the genders? Where does it all begin? Since gender is something that is constantly learned throughout one's lifetime, I will focus solely on the gender influence one is exposed to in early childhood. It starts with a simple nursery rhyme: "What are little boys made of? Dirt and snails, and puppy dogs tails. That's what little boys are made of! What are little girls made of? Sugar and spice, and everything nice. That's what little girls are made of!" This particular saying has been around for ages, commonly known and passed down through the generations. Although seemingly harmless, this saying proves to be everything but. The "what little boys/girls are made of" nursery rhyme is a perfect example of what perpetuates the inescapable gender roles in our society. Before a child is even born, parents already have an interpretation of what their child will be like. A baby girl will be sweet, dainty, and like a little princess. A baby boy will be rambunctious, strong–willed, and attracted to dirt. A majority of expectant parents tend to decorate nurseries accordingly as well; lots of pink, frills, flowers, and cuddly things for their future daughter. He claims that if no language is learned before then, it can never be learned in a normal and fully functional sense. This is known as the "Critical Period Hypothesis". An interesting example of this is the case of Genie, otherwise known as "The Wild Child". A thirteen–year–old victim of lifelong child abuse, Genie was discovered in her home on November 4th, 1970, strapped to a potty chair and wearing diapers. She appeared to be entirely without language. Her father had judged her retarded at birth and had chosen to isolate her, and so she had remained up until her discovery. It was an ideal opportunity to test the theory that a nurturing environment could somehow make up for a total lack of language past the age of 12. Sadly, she was unable to acquire language completely. Due to this and other complications, she eventually ended up in an adult foster care home. Once the child has began its basics of language acquisition it then requires a sufficient and constant input from other more advanced language users (Adults) in order to grasp and work out the regularities of that language. There are also Pre–language stages. These pre–linguistic sounds which are made in the early stages in the Childs language acquisition are simply called 'cooing' and 'babbling'. Analysis Of The Book ' World Record Hot Dog Eaters ' When I was given this assignment I was expecting to end up reading something a little difficult to follow and full of bland material that was written as colorfully as possible, making reading a book about economics bearable. This book was quit the opposite. The book did not consist of GDP, exchange rates, economic trends, international stage, mixed capitalism or finance. Instead, the book told stories of world record hot dog eaters, the similarities between famous musicians and kings, self–driven vehicles, ping–pong competitions, babies bribed with candy, and the discovery of the cause of ulcers. The entire book was based upon how we, as pieces of an economic system, can look at the world and the problems in it from different perspectives. "Think Like a Freak" essentially tries to teach the reader how to do just that; think like a freak. "What Does it Mean to Think Like a Freak?" The beginning chapters in this book sets you up to have an open mind and ask questions about societies perceptions v. reality. The authors challenge the way you think about things whose answers are seemingly obvious. One of my favorite concepts of this book is that it tells you the truth about people that society sometimes causes people not to admit to themselves. For instance, it is sometimes harder to say "I don't know" when you really don 't know the answer to something than it is to just give a false answer, although you may be well aware that your answer is not 100% correct. Some young girls that live in bad households will become pregnant and not tell her parents. The father of the child could be her own brother or even her own dad. These girls would be so frightened that they would try to get an illegal abortion, and even try to abort the baby themselves, and suffer major health problems (McBride 43). Young girls would suffer major problems just because they are too scared to tell their parents. Some effects from 2 to 4 weeks after an abortion include cramping, nausea, vomiting, and heavy bleeding. Long–term, abortions can give you infections, damage your cervix, or organs, and even kill you. These women and girls may want to have an abortion, because seeing the child would bring back all those memories and create a terrible experience, but this is not a reason for causing this much damage to yourself. These women still have the opportunity of adoption for their children and giving them a life instead of killing them, but they often choose the wrong path. Their reason for not putting the baby up for adoption is because they don't want to think about their child being raised by someone else. By the sixth month of pregnancy, an unborn baby can resemble his or her parents, dream, hear the mother's heartbeat and external noise, be felt by the mother, and survive after birth ("Baby Developmental Facts"). However, this life is terminated when a doctor grabs the baby's arms and legs with forceps, tears the baby apart piece by piece, and crushes the baby's skull. As soon as I arrived in America, I was assisted to my residence; a single room provided for the nurses and the resident 's doctor at the hospital. Alone in my room and unable to go to sleep, I could hear the echo of the neighbors conversation yet the isolation and helplessness being in a foreign country was overwhelming at that time. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are serious health problems caused by sleep deprivation (Perillo, 1994). In children and young adults, hormones which trigger and support growth are released during sleep. These hormones help strengthen our muscles as well as repairing our tissue cells. When one is deprived of sleep, especially kids, their brain stops functioning. This affects their emotional state and abilities. Severe chronic deprivation can interfere with children's balance. Sleep deprivation also causes production of hormones that causes stress to humans, similarly, sleep deprivation lowers hormone called leptin. This can affect your appetite and general taste for food. Deprivation of sleep also lowers our immune system which can make us vulnerable to respiratory problems as well as worsen lung conditions. It therefore advised to have enough sleep in order to maintain body and shape as well emotions imbalances. The ?Human Life Amendment? also states that abortion under any and all circumstances would be considered murder. In the US, black women are over three times more likely to die from maternally related complications than white women, and their babies are less likely to survive their first year (Oparah & Bonparte, 2015). Birthing Justice: Black Women, Pregnancy and Childbirth, edited by Julia Chineyere Oparah and Alicia D. Bonaparte tells the stories, experiences, oppression, and subjection of black women in the maternal health care system. Each chapter in the book explained a certain key point in the experience of black women and the health care system. In the following, I will discuss how the medical industrial complex or the introduction of medical treatments has not only stripped women of color, trans women, poor and immigrant women of their autonomy, but has sustained the hierarchy of patriarchy in the health system. Biography Erik Erikson was born on June 15, 1902 in Frankfurt, Germany. If the baby receives consistent care and feels that their caregiver is reliable, then they will be able to feel secure. Succession of this stage helps the baby develop a sense of hope. By developing hope, the baby can stay positive whenever a crisis happens in their life. If the baby fails to develop this sense of hope, then the baby will learn to sense fear throughout their life. This type of fear will lead the baby to live a life full of insecurities and anxiety (McLeod, 2008). The second stage is Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt. This is when the child is developing its physical characteristics and begins moving around more. This stage occurs between the ages of 18 months and three years old. During this stage, the child will start to assert their independence by picking out what clothes they are going to wear or what they are going to eat, etc. As they begin to do things on their own they discover that they have skills, such as tying their shoes or putting their toys together, etc. According to Erikson, it is critical that the parents at this time allow their child to explore the world and figure out their limits with encouragement and support them when they inevitably fail. During this crucial time, the parent must not intervene too much in their child's life and allow the child to make their own decisions ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Brandt utilizes literary elements such as structure and space to directly address an impacting message to her readers. The integration of transformation in [completely seduced] strongly influences a connection between reader and speaker by indulging in the aspects and theme of a mother's unconditional love. Through literary elements and a strong globally experienced theme, Di Brandt creates a powerfully raw message about the effects of being a mother and raising a child. The story describes a change in everyday life following motherhood, as well as the seductive pleasure found in providing for, caring for, and sacrificing for a little one–– all to see yourself: "in the dark pool / of your baby's eyes" (Brandt, 13/14). The spacing and structure of the poem is set up to allow flow and momentum in the poem and its narrative. The speaker's voice is present with emotion as emphasised in a natural rhythm of thought offering an honest and bare interpretation of motherhood. The open "blank space" of the poem encourages a calm and breathy atmosphere, fulfilling a mood of tranquility and bliss. Each stanza is short with a couple quick fragmented thoughts before closing each section with the power of a single word. Each stanza breaks apart a separate thought filled with a loving passion the speaker uses to stress the beauty, wonder, and over–flowing love present in motherhood. To better the structure, the poem itself is broken into three parts, each representing a stage of motherhood. The first segment of motherhood that is represented is during the moments while the baby is still in the womb and the mother waits in anticipation for the baby to arrive. This "honeymoon" phase is expressed with a tone filtered through a perception of rose–coloured glasses and excitement as the mother is in utter bliss to carry a life into the world. The ... • 47. Aristotle On Abortion Human beings are becoming more and more immoral by determining the destiny of unborn "children" nowadays. These children cannot breathe, and cannot live without the support from their mothers to stay alive. It may be really hard to identify them as a person, either. However, no power in this world should be cruel enough to terminate the life of an unborn, innocent child, who is unable to protect itself. Even under extreme circumstances where the child is seen as an unwanted object, nobody has the right to determine the destiny of another individual unless that baby becomes a criminal (!). Even rape should not be an excuse for the abortion of a child because that child does not have to pay the consequences of his father's crime with its own ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Under the circumstances such as rape, no one can suggest that the woman is facing an injustice situation, and it is her right to express her negative feelings about what happened. On the other hand, the baby cannot be held accountable for what happened to its mother. In case the baby is killed, this is more injustice for the baby. The gray line of abortion under this circumstance includes a "double injustice". In this dilemma, the critical part is to decide which side weighs more. In other words, if we make a calculation, the moral justification of making the mother and/or the baby happy should result with the highest value. That determines the best way to deal with the gray line.(mary ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 52. Child Abuse Is Not Gone Away "Every five minutes, somewhere in the world, a child dies from violence. Millions more are in danger of physical, emotional (neglect) and sexual abuse that could destroy their childhoods forever" (Beckham). Sadly, this is not a shocking fact, because child abuse is a very big issue in our world. The problem with child abuse and neglect is that someone is harming a child, most likely their own, and they don't care about it. In the novel Frankenstein, Shelley argues that child abuse and neglect are unethical and that no one should be abused. This concept is scattered all over the book, because throughout the whole story, Victor is running from or yelling at his monster. According to ChildLife, a child abuse hotline in Pennsylvania, there were more than 400 child deaths due to abuse between 2010 and 2014, and approximately 29,273 cases of abuse in the year in 2014 (Routh). One aspect of child abuse that makes it so bad is that people who are guilty of child abuse do not always do it on purposefully. For example, in July of 2011, Jaren Hare, age 21, was charged with manslaughter, third–degree murder and child neglect. Her 2 year old daughter had been killed by their python. According to the St. Petersburg Times, the snake was underfed, and when it escaped from the cage, was found in the morning wrapped around the baby. When Ms. Hare's boyfriend found the lifeless child, there were fang marks on her arms and forehead (Anton). This is seen as unethical because we could argue if this is or is not the mother's fault since she had a python in the same house as a baby. Even though the mother didn't put the python in the crib with the baby, the very fact that she left a baby unsupervised counts as neglect and abuse. Now she has to face the consequence of losing her child. Another sad aspect about child abuse is that the people who commit child abuse are not always the parents. In this instance, the mothers of several children gave permission for two strangers ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 56. Essay on The Morality of Abortion and Surrogacy The Morality of Abortion and Surrogacy It is said that, the basic principle of such tradition is that humans communicate through symbols, which are a common currency through which a sense of self is created through interaction with others. Mead's theory neatly avoids the trap of positing a sense of self that is constructed entirely through symbols and society by making a distinction between two different selves: "I" which is the unsocialized self; the font of individual desires and needs, and "me," the socialized self, the self within society. (p. 184) Elliot rightly identifies the flaws of symbolic interactionism: namely, the obsession with rationalism and the wholesale disavowal of the emotional aspects of the self. The ... The key element is that an innocent life has been taken that might have developed into the next Einstein, Edison, Salk, Jefferson, or Beethoven. (1970) Some believe that even though there may be life, or potential life, or however one wants to refer to the fetus, that by denying a woman the right to an abortion is denying her control of her body. Being a woman myself, I am obviously against people trying to control women or their bodies. But the fetus is a completely separate life from the woman. It has a completely different blood type and genetic code; it is not just part of the mother's body. It is temporarily residing there, and birth is just the change of residence from an already living, active person. He writes, "the holding environment... has as its main function the reduction to a minimum of impingements to which the infant must react with resultant annihilation of personal being" (Winnicott, 1960: 47). Furthermore, Winnicott suggests that the relationship that a child forms with the mother during her pre–kindergarten period results in the child developing a positive internal environment. As a teenager, people were often treated unfair depending on their wealth and gender. Marriages, death, and childhood all had unique, different characteristics that contributed to the daily life of the youth during the Elizabethan Era. Marriage was essential in the Elizabethan Era. For instance, women were expected at a fairly young age, around twenty–one years old, to marry. Men would often speak of their wives as children, and like they were his property (Wilson 126). In a marriage, love wasn't the concern or significant, but it may come later in the marriage. Instead, it was arranged so that both families would profit from it (Mahabal). If one chooses not to marry, he or she were thought to be witches by their neighbors (Alchin). Uncle Toms Cabin Quotes Daniela Islas In" Uncle Tom's Cabin," Harriet Beecher Stowe defines slavery as inhumane and unjust, in her book she provides real life stories of how faith, sacrifice, and cruelty, come together to demonstrate a real life vision of the terrible systems of slavery and how they affected many people. Stowe wrote this book with the solemn purpose of informing future readers about the particular ways of slavery and how it associated with poor treatment. In the format she composes the book, she entitles to several examples at a time in which slavery is seen to take over people's lives whether good or bad. In the book, Stow refers to faith as one of the very few things African Americans trusted upon and uses it as a central point in her book. For example, Tom was a very faithful man who never did anything that would go against his faith. After he was beat nearly to death by Mr. Legree's servants he refuged under his strong faith and pardon all those who hurt him and only wished good in God's land. Tom is used as a very symbolic figure in the book because of his sincere dedication to his faith. In addition, Stow also introduces us to Evangeline, a young girl whose faith only allows her to see the good on everyone's eyes. We should consider the individuality of each child as a blessing and pursue ways to expand on that. Discipline your child.
