Sanasa Insurance Company Limited (SICL) was established in Sri Lanka to provide insurance to low-income households. It began as an initiative of the Sanasa thrift and credit cooperative movement. SICL has introduced several innovative microinsurance products over the years, including funeral insurance, life insurance, and agricultural insurance. More recently, SICL launched index-based weather insurance for rice farmers and tea growers, as well as livestock insurance. While these products help farmers manage risks, scaling up index insurance faces challenges regarding data availability and farmer awareness and willingness to pay premiums. Ongoing efforts focus on addressing these challenges and linking insurance to broader risk management strategies.
