Most insurers based in Malta ten years ago would not have had formal risk or actuarial functions, other than those in life business. Fast forward to present day and all have had to implement these as key functions expected by regulations. Beyond compliance are these functions providing added value to the business?
On 15 March a half day seminar with a focus on the insurance sector organised jointly by the Malta Association of Risk Management (MARM), the Malta Actuarial Society (MAS) and the University of Malta will aim to provide insight and thought leadership gained from experienced risk and actuarial professionals on how organisations embed and make best use of these new functions. We will also briefly show how insurers operating internationally can deal with challenges posed by OECD’s BEPS project. The event will be concluded by a panel session discussing emerging risks and opportunities. We are also very pleased to have the keynote delivered by Julia Graham, an internationally renowned risk and insurance professional.

• provide recommendations to executive / senior management in managing fraud risk
• identify warning signs of fraud in operational audits
• develop Fraud ICQ to look at fraud issues
Dear Delegates,
Corporate fraud costs businesses hundreds of millions of dollars each year. It affects livelihoods and is a common
cause of corporate failure. It is the responsibility of the board of directors to prevent fraud by putting in places the
appropriate controls and review procedures. This program shows you why Accounting Information System (AIS)
Threats are ever increasing. Control risks have also increased in the last few years because there are computers
and servers everywhere, and information is available to an unprecedented number of workers. Distributed
computer networks make data available to many users, and these networks are harder to control than centralized
mainframe systems. With the introduction of 3 levels of COSO and value driven ERM, things should be under
control. Recent events at SATYAM proves that in reality things are getting out of control. So, what went wrong ?
Is it time to train the auditors ?
Recognising the challenges that organisations are facing in combating Fraud, CSI In Practice is pleased to present

best to conduct an internal investigation to protect your organization and step up on controls to deter fraud.

Leadership Deficit And The Future Of Executive And Leadership Development In ...milemadinah
This presentation highlights the immense leadership deficit that our region suffers from. It also demonstrates how our educational and training institutions, both at corporate and government levels, fall short in catering for the enormous leadership development requirements in the region. The presentation sheds light on a new strategic initiative to establish a world-class executive and leadership development institution which aims at bridging this gap. The initiative aims at building local intellectual capital and is based on a business model that ensures sustainability and provision of high quality, affordable and relevant life-long development opportunities to our future business leaders. The Madinah Institute for Leadership and Entrepreneurship (MILE) was initiated as one of Savola Group’s CSR programs. MILE is a non-profit organization and will be established at the heart of the Arab and Muslim World at the Madinah Knowledge Economic City. MILE’s first pilot program which attracted more than 150 senior executives from 16 countries has provided strong evidence of the viability of the proposed model.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
