The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
2. Torture…
A woman stripped
naked and in a
torture device clearly
shows that the film is
meant for an
audience that is over
the age of 18
The red background and
writing connotes blood,
violence and even possibly
love.
From the look on the
woman's face you can
tell that she is in pain.
This gives the audience
an impression that the
torture in the film is
quite savage.
The light at the door could
possibly show that there is a
happy ending as there is
always light at the end of the
tunnel.
There are two lines which could
possibly draw people in as it could
be a sequel to the first film
3. The woman has a chain
wrapped around her wrist
which shows that she is
the one that’s been
trapped and getting
tortured
From the look on her face
it looks like she has been
tortured so badly that she
has turned psychopathic
The word torture is written
in red which could connote
that the torture involves the
devil, blood and even love…
The word “chamber” is
black. This could
connote that the
chamber is a chamber of
death and pain
The tagline “Fear the dark”
will make people think that
as soon as the day is over,
the torture will begin so
you should fear it.
4. The teeth hanging show
that someone has just
been tortured by having
their teeth ripped out, this
gives mw the impression
that the film is meant for
people over the age of 18.
The ‘w’ in the word
“SAW” looks like scratch
marks. This symbolises
that there is pain in the
film as people are trying
to scratch their way out
of the torture
The teeth are being hung
off of a sharp blade. This
could possibly mean that
there is worse torture in
the film as they are using
the blade as just a useless
hanger.
This string could
symbolise suicide in
the film as it is in the
shape of a lasso which
people use to commit
suicide in most cases
5. Slasher…
The woman's hair is
in a shape of a
hanging rope which
show that she is the
killer as they are
used to kill people
“guess who's going to be the
life of the party” this tells the
audience that people will be
dying as there is only going
to be one person with life at
the party
The woman is holding a knife
behind her back which gives a
clear message to the audience
that it’s a slasher film as that’s
clearly her weapon.
The fact that the woman is
holding a glass of champagne
and a knife at the same time
clearly relates to the title as she
is trying to fool the others that
she's innocent even though she
isn’t.
6. The lake is red which
obviously symbolises that
there is a lot of blood in the
film. It could also symbolise
peace as rivers are very
peaceful.
The murder device is
above the whole entire
forest. This could show us
that the murderer has
killed anything and
anyone below the sky.
Hidden identity adds
mysteriousness to the
poster
The forest relates to the title
as it is all burned. This could
give away a big event that
happens in the film e.g. the
forest gets burnt.
The tool in his/her hand is used to
chop leaves and trees. This could
mean that they are a psycho
owner of the forest.
7. The silhouette of a character
adds a sense of mystery to
the poster and gets the
audience wondering who or
what it is.
The title “final Exam” is
quite relevant to the
film as it will be the
final exam after the
murderer is finished
with them
That tagline may give away what
happens in the film as the killer
might set them tasks to do, and if
they don’t complete it, they die.
The names of the film company,
director and actors are effective as
people might've seen or hear good
things about them from other films.
8. Cannibal…
The names of the film
company, director and actors
are effective as people
might've seen or hear good
things about them from
other films.
A naked woman with a pole
going through her is effective
as it shows that she has no
power and the cannibal is in
control.
There are even more women in
the back waiting. They could
just run away but the cannibal
might’ve possessed them in
some way so that they couldn't
run.
In a way this poster is quite sexist as it
is showing that men have more power
than women. Considering that, the
target audience is probably men as
women wont be interested as they
might not like being seen as weak
characters.
9. The names of the film
company, director and
actors are effective as
people might've seen or
hear good things about
them from other films
The skull shows the
audience that there will
be violence and death
in the film.
The black
background has
connotations of
death and the
unknown.
The blood connotes that
there is violence and
death in the film and
even possibly love
The white light shows that
there is hope and a bright
future for some people, it
also connotes selfishness and
arrogance.
10. The bloody writing obviously
shows that there is blood gore
and violence in the film
The naked women could show us
that there could be sexual
content
The age range for this must
be over 18 as there are
naked people and blood
The film company or name
of the director/actors are at
the top, this could draw
people in as they might’ve
seen another one of the films
they made.
