Final Ideas
1. Final Ideas
Genre
I have chosen psychological thriller as the genre for my film opening.
Psychological thriller is when abnormal things happening within the story with strange
characters in it.
The reason as for why I have chosen this type of genre is because it brings an intense
excitement to the audience. There is a buildup of suspense, tension and anticipation of what’s
to come. There is also a sense of mystery. I also enjoy the lighting effects in thriller movies
and the way the movie is portrayed.
Well known films that are psychological thriller themed are:
➔ The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
➔ American Psycho
➔ Gone Girl
➔
The reason why this genre relates to my film is because of the mysteriousness of the girl
walking through the Marina late at night. She is covered in blood whilst colour of paint is
striped of her face.
Narrative
The narrative of my film opening will be a young lady walking through the Dubai Marina
promenade late at night. Her surrounding will be very quiet. The lights from the walk will be
the only thing to beaming on her. Her clothes will be ripped with patches of blood on it. While
she is walking through the Marina stripes of paint will start to be painted coming down her
face to her chest. The colours of paint will signifi an event but that’s up to the audience to
decide what the colours mean. The stripes of paint will link to my title ‘Stripes of Events’. The
next shot will be close up of the woman's face and the stripes of paint. The last scene of my
opening will be an extreme close up of the woman’s eyes closed. When she opens them
again it will reverse to the past.
If my film was be going to made into a full feature film the overall plot would be about a
woman who is a normal working class women by day and a psyho by night. She enjoys the
feeling of her victims pain. She has friends, they think she is normal although, when they ask
her out at night she declines the invites and makes up an excuses that she has work or
doesn’t feel well. Her friends think they know her quite well when actually they don’t know
they are her victims. Everytime she murders one of her friends she leaves a stripe of colour
somewhere on their body. The stripe of colour signifies two things. It is her (murder) mark and
the colour has a dark meaning to it. The police get involved they soon realise this is the
murder’s mark and each stripe of colour has a meaning. It’s the police’s job to find out the
meaning of the colours.
2. Title Sequence
The title sequence will be the first thing to be seen by the audience. It will appear on top of a
black plain background. The title will be plain white but in bold capital letters. The title
sequence will come from the top and slowly make its way to the bottom. The next shot will be
of the woman walking through the Marina.
I will also use text to convey the crew and their production roles e.g. lighting - Martin
Characters
It’s not just the setting that needs to be familiar. My characters should be too. They are the
people we are married to or live next door to. They are normal people. My protagonist will be
ordinary and believable. The audience should understand my murder and the other
characters.
There is going to be 4 characters in my film opening. The main character (the murder) is
going to appear 95% of the time in the film opening. The other three characters will come in
towards the end of the sequence (the flashback into the past).
The women/murderer - she is very important to be introduced into my introduction because
she is the main character of the film. The audience will get their first look of what she looks
like.
My murder will need to have a flaw. She could be insecure or jealous; she might have a
mental problem or find it hard to tell the truth. Best of all the characters could be harboring a
dark secret. My characters needs some grit in their oyster. An internal problem as well as an
external one.
Visuals
The genre of the film is ‘psychological thriller’. The way I will present this to my audience in
the film opening is by keeping my opening mysterious and silent.
It’s not just the setting that needs to be familiar. My characters should be too. The heroines
(the main characters are usually female) and heroes of psychological fiction are every-women
and –men. They are the people we are married to or live next door to. They are normal
people. My protagonist will be ordinary and believable.
My characters will have they also need to have a flaw. They could be insecure or jealous;
they might have an alcohol problem or find it hard to tell the truth. Best of all, they could be
harboring a dark secret, something in their past that will come back to bite them in the present
day of your novel. Your characters needs some grit in their oyster. An internal problem as well
as an external one. They need to grow as the novel progresses and learn how to face their
demons, which will enable them to overcome the external threat that powers the plot.
3. Location
I’ve decided to shoot my film opening in the Dubai Marina Promenade. The reason for why I
have chosen this location is because it provides a mysterious and dark atmosphere to my
film. It’s also a location
Sound and Soundtrack
The soundtrack will not take away the attention from my shots but it will add tension. The
music will start to play when the stripes of pint start coming down the woman’s face. The
music will add a sense of darkness and mystery. It will not be loud or overwhelming.
