Stunting is a chronic malnutrition problem caused by long-term lack of nutrition, which can cause difficulties in achieving optimal physical and cognitive development. It is caused by genetic, environmental, economic, and sanitation factors. Risk factors include poor nutritional status, lack of environmental hygiene and sanitation, insufficient complementary feeding, lack of exclusive breastfeeding, infectious diseases, and poor feeding patterns. Impacts in the short-term include impaired brain development, intelligence, and physical growth as well as metabolic disorders, while long-term impacts are cognitive decline, decreased immunity, heart disease, cancer, and disability in old age.
