When stressed, the body releases hormones that increase heart rate, muscle tension, blood pressure and breathing to prepare for fighting or fleeing. Stress can impact both mental and physical well-being. Children experience stress from demands of school, family and friends which can cause mood swings, changes in sleep or academic performance. As facilitators, teachers can help manage classroom stress by accepting students, avoiding comparisons, using multi-sensory approaches, building emotional intelligence, motivating students and encouraging independence. Seeking counselor help is also recommended.
