While everyone knows a good story when they see one, few know what makes a good story good, and fewer still can write one. All the recent buzz about storytelling is good. But buzz mainly makes your hair stand on end. Frank C. Dickerson, Ph.D. will help you begin what will hopefully be a career-long learning process of learning how to improve your communication skills.

Business Storytelling by Cynthia Hartwig of Two PensCynthia Hartwig
Anyone familiar with the Bible and Aesop’s fables already knows that stories are the oldest persuasive tool since the dawn of time. And now everybody from the The Wall Street Journal to LinkedIn is saying that storytelling will be the number one business skill needed in the next five years. That’s why you should run, don’t walk, to see the hands-on business storytelling workshop with Cynthia Hartwig, fiction writer and co-founder of Two Pens.
Over the course of her career in advertising and social media, Cynthia Hartwig has honed the act of telling stories into a fun and practical art. She’ll lead you in a series of practice-makes-perfect exercises that will help you to persuade, excite, sell and sway people to your point of view.
You’ll see how stories can be used in all kinds of business settings to communicate and connect with employees, customers, colleagues, partners, suppliers, and the media.
You’ll learn the mechanics of telling a story with a beginning that hooks you, to a middle that builds tension, to a satisfying end.
You’ll learn how to weave rich information (even numbers) with personal insights and emotional power and then experience the thrill of having an audience remember what you’ve said. Many writing exercises are included to help you tap into the mind’s unique hard-wiring that can create a story out of almost any experience.
Tired of hearing "Millennials have been decoded, debunked, everything you need to hear" then "everything you've heard is wrong"... This isn't that at all. See why we think this generation deserves more than a few statistics and bold claims to tell their story. There’s a lot contradictory info on this generation, but that’s because they’re full of contradictions themselves.

Teaching Everybody through Videconferencing IATEFL 2017Mercedes Viola
As the United Nations states, we should ensure inclusive and quality education for all.
An English programme called Ceibal en Inglés is being implemented in Uruguay. It is an innovative project that we are using to address the high demand of English when there are not enough qualified teachers in the country. The programme is being delivered through three 45-minute English language lessons per week. The first of these lessons (lesson A) is delivered by an English teacher who teleconferences into the classrooms. The two remaining lessons (lessons B and C) are taught by the classroom teacher (CT). Lesson plans are designed in three different levels to take students from A0 to A2 on the CEFR by the British Council.
I have been coordinating a team of remote English teachers (RT) since the beginning of the programme. In these years we have been teaching groups from all over the country and from many different neighbourhoods in our capital city; each group with different characteristics, from different socio-cultural backgrounds and with diverse challenges; and each specific group with its own diversity.
We are not living an era of change; we are living a change of era.
Power, to a very great extent, is becoming global and politics remains local. Disruptive innovation is changing our world.
There are no certainties, only questions to be discussed collectively.
The future, already here, of English teaching and EducationMercedes Viola
We are witnessing a change of era. Old paradigms are being put into question and new paradigms and ideas are emerging. There are some general agreements, but there is no final conclusion.
We need to redefine what we are educating for and why.
Inclusive Education in ELT - Education for AllMercedes Viola
Education should be inclusive at all levels and ensure the access of disabled children and teenagers to the same general education offered to all.
Inclusive Education means all students can fully participate in any mainstream school, college or university. It is a process of addressing and responding to the diversity of needs of all learners.
Since English is being taught in most schools and universities, it plays a crucial role in the design of an inclusive curriculum.
In this talk we will look at what inclusive Education implies and how we, English teachers, can create meaningful learning experiences for all.
Education should be inclusive at all levels and ensure the access of disabled children and teenagers to the same general education offered to all. Their right to equal educational opportunities is our obligation as educators.

“Appreciative Inquiry is the cooperative search for the best in people, their organizations, and the world around them. It involves systematic discover of what gives a system ‘life’ when it is most effective and capable in economic, ecological, and human terms.” Cooperrider, D.L. & Whitney, D
It is a methodology aimed at the development of the organization based on the assumption that inquiry into and dialogue about strengths, successes, values, hopes and dreams is in itself transformational.
The process used to generate the power of Appreciative Inquiry is the 4-D Cycle:
Discovery - Dream - Design - Destiny
Discovery: The Discovery phase is a diligent and extensive search to understand the "best of what is" and "the best of what has been."
Dream: The Dream phase is an energizing exploration of "what might be:"
Design: The Design phase involves making choices about "what should be" within an organization or system.
Destiny: The Destiny phase initiates a series of inspired actions that support ongoing learning and innovation - or "what will be."
School leaders and teachers are searching for a purpose and a sense of identity. We want more than just pay; we want a ‘sense of mission’. When you believe in a professional way of doing your job you have to be able to transmit this to all the people involved in teaching/learning process.
The Appreciative Inquiry methodology helps to create our identity and to transmit our values and beliefs. Educational institutions need to be knowledge rich, adaptable and permanently changing. We need to be able to design curricula according to our student’s individual needs.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

8. There is a pertinent story about a man who was
working on an oil platform in the North Sea. He
woke up one night from a loud explosion, which
suddenly set his entire oil platform on fire. In
mere moments, he was surrounded by flames.
Through the smoke and heat, he barely made his
way out of the chaos to the platform's edge. When
he looked down over the edge, all he could see
were the dark, cold, foreboding Atlantic waters.
As the fire approached him, the man had mere
seconds to react. He could stand on the platform,
and inevitably be consumed by the burning
flames. Or, he could plunge 30 meters in to the
freezing waters. The man was standing upon a
"burning platform," and he needed to make a
choice.
9. He decided to jump. It was unexpected. In
ordinary circumstances, the man would never
consider plunging into icy waters. But these
were not ordinary times - his platform was on
fire. The man survived the fall and the
waters. After he was rescued, he noted that a
"burning platform" caused a radical change
in his behaviour.
We too, are standing on a "burning platform,"
and we must decide how we are going to
change our behaviour.
