2. In what ways do your media projects challenge, use or develop conventions of real media products? ♥ MUSIC VIDEO ♥ DIGIPACK ♥ POSTER
3. Ancillary Task: Poster In order to comply with the conventions of a female solo artists for our poster, we took direct inspiration from three existing posters , combined aspects of them and gave it a personal touch. As our music video was somewhat off-the-wall, we wanted to be much more conventional with our ancillary tasks, so we tried to challenge many aspects of the genre. We liked that Katy Perry and Kate Nash didn’t use realistic backgrounds, favouring patterned, ‘photoshopped’ backgrounds. In order to replicate with this we used a pink background with superimposed Belgian bun cakes, as they are Kira’s logo. However, we didn’t rely like the portrait style set up of the posters- and we chose to follow Britney Spears and use a landscape sheet and this made our poster look like a piece of art. We also like how she plastered her name across the poster in large font as this is a brilliant example of branding. People would look at our poster straight away, and even if they didn’t know who the artist was right away- they could quickly tell you it was by an artist called Kira Kitson.
4. Ancillary Task: CD Digipack Rihanna- Loud Jessie J- What You Are Laura Marling- I Speak Because I Can For our ancillary tasks we decided to go very conventional. We used feminine colours of pinks and reds to achieve a look that would be desirable for a female between 16-34. We also followed conventions by using a close up picture as the main image on the back and front cover, to firstly appeal to our target audience but also as a medium of branding so Kira Kitson could be easily recognised. Feminine colour pallet, close up and an image next to the track listing Close up, artist’s name a main focal of the cover Images on both the back and front, mid shots used for album insert A selection of female solo artist digipacks.
5. Music Video We used close up performance shots to create an intimate relationship between Kira Kitson and the viewer- a method employed in another confidante song ‘Not Fair’ by Lily Allen, which is the same genre as Pumpkin Soup. We used two-shorts to emulate a sense of closeness that was displayed in the original video for Pumpkin Soup . We tried to use elements of Mis-en-Scene from the original music video, luckily we had a pair of heart shaped glasses to recreate Kate’s fun and playful sense of style. We followed and developed conventions in our music video via camera shots and mis-en-scene. Our video almost consisted entirely of two shots in order to represent the closeness between Kira and all of her boyfriends- however when it came to the performance shots that we filmed in the studio, these turned into close ups to build up intimacy between Kira and the viewer, because she was telling them all of her secrets ad her entirely story. We also played with mis-en-scene by wearing cute but demure dresses that were very Kate Nash and trying to incorporate props that would look very kitsch…like retro 50s heart shaped glasses and a Soviet Union hat.
