In case you haven't heard, we have our regional STC Mid-Atlantic
Technical Communication Conference coming up soon. It includes
a keynote presentation by Don Moyer and 12 sessions from well-
known STC leaders (Alan Houser, Bernard Ashwanden, Cheyl
Landes, Nicky Bliel, Alice Preston, Barrie Byron, and others). This
is our biggest event and scholarship fundraiser - plus we've priced
it very aggressively for those who renew their 2011 STC
membership and join our local chapter (only $70). Also, we still
have limited space for Don Moyer's full-day workshop onFriday,
March 25. It's only $50 for chapter members and includes a
free companion workbook.
I wish to thank everyone who attended our February 9th meeting,
which was presented by Joe Welinske fromWritersUA. It was a
great meeting with a big turnout and an informative opening
session by Mike Sauber from Epilogue Systems, who sponsored
the event.
We've got more great programs in store for 2011, so please take
the time to renew your 2011 STC membership and take
advantage of the special offers and benefits that come with
membership (if you haven't done so already).

3. February Meeting Notes
Joe Welinske, President of Writers UA, presented An Overview of Trends,
Tools, and Technologies in Software User Assistance at the STC PMC
meeting this month. User assistance is of increasing importance, especially
in the mobile phone arena where UA has been particularly lacking. This will
be of interest to technical writers because UA is a part of content
development, project planning, and browser-based help.
Welinske recommends learning about the development of smartphones
(their software development kits are usually available online.) Also, learn
about apps and notice how current ones can be improved, and what can be
innovated. While it may be difficult to write "shorter," it will be a satisfying
challenge to tackle.
How Did You Get Into The Technical Communication
Field?
I sort of fell into technical communication. I used to be in marketing
communications and got laid off. Dr. Dolores Lehr (still a PMC member)
suggested I apply for the software job that was advertised in News & Views.
I applied and got the job (Motorola). I have a head for technical things, so I
did more than software documentation (engineering, safety, chemistry). I
got a job at DuPont and have been here more or less since that time.
