July 2011
Whew! Has this summer been hot enough for you? When we're shoveling
snow and thinking about how cold it gets in the region, maybe we'll look
back fondly on these warm days. No? (Yeah, me neither).
Although we usually take a bit of a break from the regular STC routine of
monthly meetings during this time of year, we do have a free Summer
Potluck social event coming up on August 13 at my house in Chester
County. This year we're co-sponsoring the event with
the UsabilityNJ chapter and are glad to have some of their members
joining us. I encourage you to stop by, grab some protein and beverage,
and say 'Hello!' if you're in the neighborhood. We had a great time and
turnout last year, so I hope to see many of you again this time.
We'll be ramping up for a full, busy STC season again shortly - so stay
tuned and please feel free to contact us if you have ideas/suggestions or
want to get involved meeting new people or learning new skills.

Project Evaluation 101: For Writers and Editors
by Edna P. Smith
Have you ever started a documentation project and wondered how much
editorial or developer/SME support you would need throughout the project
lifecycle? Judith A. Tarutz, in her text Technical Editing: The Practical Guide
for Editors and Writerspondered this very question. Tarutz devised a system
of triage to help writers and editors evaluate their projects and schedule
them accordingly. Though she writes this section of her text with the writer-
editor relationship in mind, I have included the writer-developer/SME and the
editor-developer/SME relationships and added a deadline consideration.
This system can allow you, whether you are in the writer or editor role, to set
the proper expectations for the editorial and development teams and allow
them to fit you into their schedules. To evaluate the project and determine
the level of editorial or developer/SME support necessary, there are four
questions to consider:
1. How important is the project?
2. How difficult is the project?
3. What is the writer-editor, writer-developer/SME, or editor-developer/SME
relationship like?
4. When is the project deadline?
