Brief 3: Media and Online
My film magazine will target a wider media literate audience on different genres. Engaging the audience through film content on topics that
permeate society. Representation will be targeted through age, gender, sexual orientation and culture topics including a lens for those that
have a mature interest in films, film making and the film industry. The norms we experience in society such as, archetype and countertype
can be seen highlighted as planned for e.g., in the contents page 19 of the first edition of the magazine I will be showcasing women
empowerment through female directors. The primary target audience is sixteen to twenty-five.
The latest film content appealing to this audience group with hard hitting messages and relevant stories as experienced in today's society.
Representation of demographics, race and culture will be provided through examples from 'Bollywood' and 'Hollywood.' Secondary target
audience is all movie buffs with access to some of all time 'Classics' as well as the new releases. The social grade that I will be aiming my
film magazine is the A to C1 social bracket. I have selected this social grade as the magazine is released monthly and the price is high for a
film magazine at £4.00 price range and therefore, they will have disposable income. The masthead, 'ViewFinder' denotes a device on a
camera used to frame and focus the picture, alluding to the film making industry with photographical aspects connoting to the cinematic
experience. The cover lines will compliment the house style and alternate from red, black and white with text size ranging for emphasis.
The contents page will maintain consistency using a bold Helvetica font and red and white colour contrast to the black slim Helvetica font
used alongside the page number to explain the contents of the page number. Original photos will be featured on the contents page with
correlating page numbers in the main colours contrasting for high visibility against image. Image variations to reflect age, gender and
culture. These images will also share intertextual references e.g., second edition there will be a reference to the ‘Stranger Things’ television
series through the use of a image on the contents page.
Researching film magazines such as Total Film, SciFiNow and Empire has elevated my design concepts e.g., layout, contrasting colours
and maintaining a house style with a creative masthead. Market research influenced my film content features and all filming and
photography complimented each article. Through various media language elements, I have aimed to create a compelling and meaningful
communication experience for the audience, utilising both printed and audio-visual media formats.
The 'ViewFinder' magazine website will also target a wider media literate audience on different genres.
Engaging the audience through film content on topics that permeate society but are also up to date. An
example of this would be the 'Top Films of the Month' page and also an archive page featuring recent
editions of the ViewFinder magazine, encouraging readers to access the magazine. Representation will
be targeted through age, gender, sexual orientation and culture; topics including a lens for those that
have a mature interest in films, film making and the film industry. The norms we experience in society
such as, archetype and counter-type can be seen highlighted through films on the website and will
include members of different ethnicities, gender and age starring in these films.
The social grade that I will be aiming my film magazine is the A to C1 social bracket. I have selected this
social grade as the magazine is released monthly and the price is high for a film magazine at a £4.00
price range and therefore, they will have disposable income. However, there will be further options in
terms of accessibility on the website, encouraging viewers to buy a plan suitable for them or to access
the website for free, still accessing some features and encouraging the audience to see the magazine’s
recent editions as the ‘archived’ page will be a constant feature on the website. The masthead,
'ViewFinder' and beneath will be the line 'The ViewFinder's Ultimate Guide To Movie Magic' which will
also be in both magazine editions produced.
In terms of colour scheme on the 'ViewFinder' website; it will alternate from red, black and white with text.
The contents page will maintain consistency using bold font and red, white and black colour- contrast.
Original photos will be featured on the website's pages with correlating film related text in the main
colours contrasting for high visibility against the image. Image variations to reflect age, gender and
culture.
In terms of house-style, the main colours of my magazine (red, black and white will be mirrored on the
website. Both editions will share the same line above the masthead, 'The ViewFinder's ultimate guide to
movie magic' which immediately creates awareness and indicates the magazine has great knowledge and
specialises in the film industry specifically. In audio-visual media, I will employ similar techniques, but with
the additional use of sound to explore the media further and interviewing process with a structured script
relating to films which will relate to the contents of my magazine. Similarly, the magazine editions will have
links to social media and the magazines website. On the website will be archived editions of the magazine
to encourage the reader to engage with the magazine material.
