This document is a statement of intent for a media studies project creating a magazine and website about the impacts of COVID-19. The student plans to use mise-en-scene techniques like low-key lighting and a variety of camera shots and angles to portray the dark and negative effects of COVID-19. Fonts will be carefully selected to maintain consistency across articles and sections. The magazine and accompanying website will have matching styles to demonstrate digital convergence, with the website hosting digital copies of the magazine and other related magazines. The goal is to appeal to the target audience of 16-25 year olds from socioeconomic group AB.

Brief 3: Magazines and Online
In order to appeal to my target audience of 16-25 and AB, i will use mise en scene. To appeal to
my target audience my style needs to be varied and all elements must appeal to the 16-25-year
olds in bracket AB. In my magazine the lighting will be low key lighting. The low-key lighting
will illustrate the effects of Covid and portray the disease as dark and negative. This will
appeal to the audience as Covid is currently the most current affair. Not only that but the low-
key lighting will stand out compared to the conventional high key lighting magazine.
For my magazines I will use a variety of different camera angles and shots. One of the main
reasons for having a variety of camera shots is to try to appeal to my audience as much as
possible. To achieve this, I will use camera angles such as close up shots and mid angle. I will
use a close up shot as I believe it captures emotion better then any other type of camera shot.
Furthermore, I will use mid angle due to the fact that it will include small details of a
background whilst keeping the main image as the focus.
The pictures I use will need to be conventional to current affair magazine. Therefore, on my
front cover and contents page they will need to use direct address, be a close up to medium
shot in order to present the effects of Covid and portray the emotion of the model. It is
important to have a good variety of pictures in a magazine otherwise there is a risk of it having
too much writing and becoming more of a book.

When determining my font, I had to take into account the size and the type of font. I have to make sure
that the font stays consistent throughout the entire magazine. By keeping the font consistent I am
assuring that the magazine is going to be very tidy which will appeal to my audience of the AB bracket.
My titles and headings will all be written in a serif font type as it is more formal whereas my footers and
smaller texts will be written in sans-serif. The colours of font that I am going to use will be black, red
and white. This is to contrast against the colour of background that I will be using (for example: black
font with a contrasting white background)
The website also needs to follow the brief in order to attract my target audience. By using
similar/ the same fonts this will help to attract the audience. The website will include a copy of
the magazine as well as other magazines so show the style of the current affair magazine.

My magazine and website will be linked so you are able to view the magazine online as well as in
real life. From the research I did other magazines and websites also include other issues of
magazines. This means they are linbked and are able to keep the brand image the same. In order
to do that I will need to use the same fonts and style as my magazine. This will make my magazine
and website consistent and will appeal to my target audience of 16-25 years and AB bracket. The
website is key to the success of my magazine as it is more current and suitable for the age group
and bracket.
