November 2014 HUG: Lessons from Hadoop 2+Java8 migration at LinkedIn Yahoo Developer Network
Hadoop has been a critical part of LinkedIn’s massive data infrastructure by providing reliable data storage and efficient processing frameworks. To accommodate increasing amounts of data and processing overhead, LinkedIn has been an early adopter of the Hadoop ecosystem. Since last year, the Hadoop team at LinkedIn has evaluated the Hadoop 2/YARN framework and currently is migrating existing clusters to YARN. LinkedIn is also leading the effort to run Hadoop on the latest JDK 8. Additionally, new versions of Pig, Hive, & Azkaban have been deployed which are Hadoop 2 compliant. During LinkedIn’s migration, the Hadoop team closely worked with the open source community by reporting issues using Apache Jira and submitting patches to upstream projects. In this presentation, I will cover the challenges and discoveries made while migrating thousands of jobs from Hadoop 1 to Hadoop 2 at LinkedIn.

Kubernetes has been adopted as the native container language for the top three cloud vendors and most large enterprises.
But as good as Kubernetes is, it only solves the computational half of the problem. The other half of the problem is the management of persistent state such as files, tables and event or message streams. We need something like Kubernetes, but for data.
I will describe Kubernetes including a high-level description about how it works and how you can get it to work for you.

Deep learning is one of the fastest growing areas of machine learning and a hot topic in both academia and industry. It has dramatically improved the state-of-the-art in areas such as speech recognition, computer vision, predicting the activity of drug molecules, and many other machine learning tasks. The basic idea of deep learning is to automatically learn to represent data in multiple layers of increasing abstraction, thus helping to discover intricate structure in large datasets. NVIDIA has invested in SaturnV, a large GPU-accelerated cluster, (#28 on the November 2016 Top500 list) to support internal machine learning projects. After an introduction to deep learning on GPUs, we will address a selection of open questions programmers and users may face when using deep learning for their work on these clusters."

Improving Python and Spark Performance and Interoperability with Apache Arrow...Databricks
Apache Spark has become a popular and successful way for Python programming to parallelize and scale up data processing. In many use cases though, a PySpark job can perform worse than an equivalent job written in Scala. It is also costly to push and pull data between the user’s Python environment and the Spark master.
Apache Arrow-based interconnection between the various big data tools (SQL, UDFs, machine learning, big data frameworks, etc.) enables you to use them together seamlessly and efficiently, without overhead. When collocated on the same processing node, read-only shared memory and IPC avoid communication overhead. When remote, scatter-gather I/O sends the memory representation directly to the socket avoiding serialization costs.

The best way to understand the cloud, is to have one of your own to kick around, poke, break, fix, and see what it looks like when it's running. In OpenStack we've got a whole project called Devstack which is designed to quickly bootstrap the latest git versions of all the OpenStack components and create an experimentation friendly OpenStack environment. This talk will introduce Devstack, how to get a running OpenStack with it, and how one might begin making changes and seeing them in action. We'll explore a few of the major OpenStack services, see what's going on, all with the intent to explain what OpenStack is by seeing not only the interface, but the internals at work.

Observability is a hugely popular topic, however, for open-source users, significant challenges remain. For starters, related licensing is frequently problematic—and even when it works, there is no pure Apache 2.0 licensed technology to get data collection and visibility into your logs, metrics, and traces. Thankfully, this is gradually changing as the community builds new capabilities into OpenSearch Dashboards to unify the visualization of logs from OpenSearch, metrics from PromQL compatible systems, and traces from Jaeger. In this session, we’ll examine how this important project is evolving as a fork of the previously popular ELK stack. We’ll also take a closer look at the current state of OpenSearch and Jaeger and discuss how these efforts are going to provide a foundation for unified observability to the open-source communities. By using OpenTelemetry for data collection, this foundation provides a pure Apache 2.0 licensed open-source platform for unified observability. OpenSearch also includes features like Alerting and Machine Learning, which are not part of Jaeger today. The work on this foundational integration is well underway and will provide open-source users with a solid alternative to vendor controlled and provided solutions. This also opens up the marketplace for solutions to be created to host and manage these at scale, something we’ve seen with countless other CNCF projects. This talk will be presented by a contributor and maintainer of OpenSearch, Jaeger, and OpenTelemetry, which are all vibrant user communities. Join the conversation!

Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
