Teaching Apache Spark Clusters to Manage Their Workers Elastically: Spark Sum...Spark Summit
Devops engineers have applied a great deal of creativity and energy to invent tools that automate infrastructure management, in the service of deploying capable and functional applications. For data-driven applications running on Apache Spark, the details of instantiating and managing the backing Spark cluster can be a distraction from focusing on the application logic. In the spirit of devops, automating Spark cluster management tasks allows engineers to focus their attention on application code that provides value to end-users.
Using Openshift Origin as a laboratory, we implemented a platform where Apache Spark applications create their own clusters and then dynamically manage their own scale via host-platform APIs. This makes it possible to launch a fully elastic Spark application with little more than the click of a button.
We will present a live demo of turn-key deployment for elastic Apache Spark applications, and share what we’ve learned about developing Spark applications that manage their own resources dynamically with platform APIs.
The audience for this talk will be anyone looking for ways to streamline their Apache Spark cluster management, reduce the workload for Spark application deployment, or create self-scaling elastic applications. Attendees can expect to learn about leveraging APIs in the Kubernetes ecosystem that enable application deployments to manipulate their own scale elastically.
This event is in collaboration and hosted in and by the Khobar PyData meetup.

Modern Applications: Do you want to start your cloud-native journey? modern applications that are portable, failure resilient and behave consistently in repeatable way? did you hear of containers? Docker? Kubernetes? come, get introduced to container and how to manage and run them at scale to deploy modern day applications, come practice, share knowledge and have fun with Docker, and Kubernetes. Better have your notebook fully charged!
Containers are becoming a fundamental technology skill to master for any job: DevOps Engineer, Software Engineer, Data Engineer or Data Scientist.
This meetup will try to answer the questions of why and how the container revolution came about by providing a short history of container technologies. Using hands-on introduction to Docker and docker-compose. We will show why the portability of containers is so important in running the same application in multiple environments.
The last section of the meetup will consist of a hands-on demonstration of the most popular container orchestration technology today, Kubernetes.

Scheduling a Kubernetes Federation with AdmiraltyIgor Sfiligoi
Presented at OSG All-Hands Meeting 2020 - USCMS-USATLAS Session.
This talk presented the PRP experience with using Admiralty as a Kubernetes federation solution, with both discussion of why we need it, why Admiralty is the best (if not actually the only) solution for our needs, and how it works.
At Opendoor, we do a lot of big data processing, and use Spark and Dask clusters for the computations. Our machine learning platform is written in Dask and we are actively moving data ingestion pipelines and geo computations to PySpark. The biggest challenge is that jobs vary in memory, cpu needs, and the load in not evenly distributed over time, which causes our workers and clusters to be over-provisioned. In addition to this, we need to enable data scientists and engineers run their code without having to upgrade the cluster for every request and deal with the dependency hell.
To solve all of these problems, we introduce a lightweight integration across some popular tools like Kubernetes, Docker, Airflow and Spark. Using a combination of these tools, we are able to spin up on-demand Spark and Dask clusters for our computing jobs, bring down the cost using autoscaling and spot pricing, unify DAGs across many teams with different stacks on the single Airflow instance, and all of it at minimal cost.
The next generation of research infrastructure and large scale scientific instruments will face new magnitudes of data.
This talk presents two flagship programmes: the next generation of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN and the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) radio telescope. Each in their way will push infrastructure to the limit.
The LHC has been one of the significant users of OpenStack in scientific computing. The SKA is now working to a final software architecture design and is focusing on OpenStack as an underlying middleware function.
Together, we plan to develop a common platform for scaling science: to accommodate new applications and software services, to deliver high ingest rate real-time and batch processing, to integrate high performance storage and to unlock the potential of software defined networking.
Flink Forward San Francisco 2019: Managing Flink on Kubernetes - FlinkK8sOper...Flink Forward
Managing Flink on Kubernetes - FlinkK8sOperator
The goal of Lyft is to “Improve people’s lives with the world’s best transportation”. Our product is fundamentally real-time and building a reliable platform that consumes and processes massive amounts of streaming data empowers us to achieve our mission. The advent of containers and Kubernetes has completely changed how we deploy and manage stateless services. At Lyft we have doubled down on Docker containers and Kubernetes for all the services in production. To achieve a homogenous infrastructure we decided to extend Kubernetes to manage stateful streaming services like Flink. We developed the FlinkK8sOperator which leverages Kubernetes CustomResourceDefinition to enable native management of Flink applications on Kubernetes. FlinkK8sOperator employs a state machine that transitions the application through a series of states, until a stable state is attained. Each Flink application on Kubernetes spins up a separate Flink Cluster, with its own UI, providing clear isolation for monitoring and debugging. This talk provides an overview of running Flink applications on Kubernetes using FlinkK8sOperator, showcasing the entire lifecycle of the application from creation to execution, with focus of transitions during deployments and stateful updates, concluding with a demo.

Climate Science Flows: Enabling Petabyte-Scale Climate Analysis with the Eart...Globus
The Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) is a global network of data servers that archives and distributes the planet’s largest collection of Earth system model output for thousands of climate and environmental scientists worldwide. Many of these petabyte-scale data archives are located in proximity to large high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing resources, but the primary workflow for data users consists of transferring data, and applying computations on a different system. As a part of the ESGF 2.0 US project (funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science), we developed pre-defined data workflows, which can be run on-demand, capable of applying many data reduction and data analysis to the large ESGF data archives, transferring only the resultant analysis (ex. visualizations, smaller data files). In this talk, we will showcase a few of these workflows, highlighting how Globus Flows can be used for petabyte-scale climate analysis.
