A few quick points for those who may be attending an OpenStack Summit for the first time. We are excited to see you in Barcelona, Spain October 25-28, 2016.
OpenStack is an open source cloud project and community with broad commercial and developer support. OpenStack is currently developing two interrelated technologies: OpenStack Compute and OpenStack Object Storage. OpenStack Compute is the internal fabric of the cloud creating and managing large groups of virtual private servers and OpenStack Object Storage is software for creating redundant, scalable object storage using clusters of commodity servers to store terabytes or even petabytes of data. In this tutorial, Bret Piatt will explain how to deploy OpenStack Compute and Object Storage, including an overview of the architecture and technology requirements.
This was a tutorial which Mark McClain and I led at ONUG, Spring 2015. It was well received and serves as a walk through of OpenStack Neutron and it's features and usage.
OpenEBS 1.1 has been released and is now ready for prime time. MayaData Agility Platform, the commercial distribution of OpenEBS combined with MayaOnline or MayaOnPrem and support, has also been updated and loaded with a lot of new features.
In this webinar, we will cover new features like:
Kubernetes Job for auto update of releases
Support for an alpha version of CSI driver with limited functionality for provisioning and de-provisioning of cStor volumes.

Distributed Proxies have opened the floodgates for Service Meshes to provide substantial value at the Application Networking Layer, but early adopters of Service Meshes are often overwhelmed by operational complexities. How do you ensure that the proxy is distributed everywhere your software runs? How do you safely upgrade or roll back all those proxies? How can you ensure that your network config is correct - without pushing it to production and risking an outage? Following the GitOps Principles is key to simplifying Service Mesh Operations. Defining the entire service mesh declaratively - be it installation, proxy injection, or configuration - provides a mechanism to safely manage the complexities of a service mesh. Continuously reconciling declarative config with the latest service mesh release keeps you from being caught off-guard by CVEs. Progressive Delivery tools enable seamless movement from one version of a service mesh to another - and back - with minimal impact to traffic.
In this talk from the OpenStack Summit in Barcelona (October 2016), we explain the appetite for skipping OpenStack upstream releases in production deployments, talk about when skipping releases might or might not be right for your cloud deployment, and demonstrate how we successfully upgraded OpenStack clouds from IceHouse to Kilo (skipping Juno) and Kilo to Mitaka (skipping Liberty).
Do you know how Continuous Delivery of Java Open Source libraries looks? How big is your release overhead? Do you update release notes and include contributors manually? How do you handle versioning? Do you use semantic versioning?
During this workshop, you will learn how to set up Continuous Delivery for your library. You’ll never have to manually release new versions again. We will use the following tools: GitHub, TravisCI, Bintray, Maven Central. We will glue everything using Shipkit.org - a project born from Mockito (and still used there). You’ll additionally learn SerVer.
This workshop is mostly for Java open source and Gradle plugins developers. We will use a library prepared especially for this training, so no worries if you don’t have your own open source project (yet).
Prerequisites: GitHub account, Java & Gradle basics.
OpenStack “Liberty,” due for imminent release, represents the 12th release of the open source computing platform for public and private clouds. Recent OpenStack releases have focused on improving stability and enhancing the operator experience. This is still the case with Liberty, but there are still new features to consider.
Join Sean Cohen and Steve Gordon to review notable features of this new OpenStack release, including:
Network quality of service (QoS) support via a new extensible API for dynamically defining per-port and per-network QoS policies.
Mark host down API enhancement in support of external high-availability solutions, including pacemaker, providing resilient instances in the event of compute node failure.
Enhanced Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) support including dashboard integration, Ipsilon, and OpenID Connect support.
Role-based access control (RBAC) for networks, providing fine-grained permissions for sharing networks between tenants.
Dashboard support for database-as-a-service (Trove), subnet allocation, floating IP assignment, and volume migration.
Generic volume migration—adding the ability to migrate workloads from iSCSI to non-iSCSI back ends.
New Cinder replication API to allow block level replication between back ends.
Nondisruptive backup to allow backup while the volume is still attached, by performing backup from a temporary attached snapshot.
New Image signing and encryption to guarantee integrity by supporting signing and signature validation of bootable images.
In addition we’ll discuss the state of emerging projects including Manila and Zaqar.
Presentation written by Sean Cohen and Steve Gordon at Red Hat covering the highlights of the OpenStack Liberty release.
Presented to the Atlanta OpenStack Meetup on October 15th.
Openstack Summit Tokyo 2015 - Building a private cloud to efficiently handle ...Pierre GRANDIN
What do you do when your usual setup or turnkey solution isn’t suited for your workload?
Most of the documentation and user feedback that you can find about OpenStack is written for the use-case of running a public facing cloud serving several external customers. When you want to host a single tenant with a single application the problem is completely different, you don't want publicly exposed APIs. You want to ensure optimal resource allocation to maximize your application performance. You want to leverage the fact that you own the infrastructure layer to optimize your instance placement strategy, and to get the best latency and to avoid creating SPOFs using affinity (or anti affinity rules).
This talk will focus on what we learned during a two years journey; from getting OpenStack up and running reliably, to investigating performance bottlenecks, to maximizing the performance of our private cloud.

● Interoperability of Nova API
○ Flavor and Image metadata, Networking
● Big bug fix themes
○ Quotas, Cross Project Interactions
● Reliability and API Error Reporting (Tasks)
Editor's Notes
Agreed priorities at summit:
Nova has got too big, with components that are too tightly coupled, mostly due to very loose interfaces
Creating bugs that hurt users, and technical debt is slowing development
Better nova-scheduler interface (cross project scheduling), Mainstream Cells system
API v2.1:
easier to evolve, better discoverability, hard to use incorrectly
user requests specific version (above min) => isolate from changes
maintain v2.0 compatibility, eventually all APIs powered by single code base
Upgrade (normal to have no VM downtime, or connectivity downtime):
juno->kilo we did our first online database migration. Zero impact schema migrations and online-only data migrations
Release management focusing on reporting not prediction
Summit sessions gave priority to:
Continued work on architectural evolution
And Community Evolution (see next section)
We are always evolving, but during Liberty it’s time for a more focused effort
Miss match between intention and execution
Better comms:
strongly aligned, well established team => harder to join
Nova is really big, so its harder to get involved.
Ideally reduce scope: Cinder (layer below) and Heat (layer on top) are great examples
Users don’t want vendor lockin, Vender want users to easily adopt their technology, DefCore is helping
Upgrade from any commit: Live upgrade, API supported, but need to upgrade to each release, to drop compatibility code
Feature Classification:
Evolution of Hypervisor support matrix and Compute driver classification (A, B, C) but More API focused
Currently focused on how to evolve the API
Above work shines spotlight on APIs that are: incomplete or not interoperable
Our bug backlog shows some key themes
need to identify and address those head on
Biggest bug theme is general reliability (hurts upgrades)
Stability “Theater”: system has to feel stable.
