Standard Chinese has developed from mandarin, the common language used among officials in imperial China. While Chinese languages vary greatly between provinces, mandarin served as a universal language. Standard Chinese shares features with other Chinese varieties, lacking inflection and using topic-comment structure. It has adopted some vocabulary and phrases from the Beijing dialect.
