Effective Communication with "I Messages"
• Teach the "I Message" structure: Event/Behavior → Feeling → Consequence.
• Focus on reducing blame and encouraging assertiveness.
• Discuss cultural and relational barriers.
Tips for using "I Messages":
 • Be patient: Change takes time.
 • Be realistic: Some conflicts may not resolve, but assertive communication maintains self-
respect.

Positive Imagery
• Practice imagining a vivid calming place, using sensory details.
• Keep a reminder (e.g., photo, object) handy.
Seek Support

Messages."
Take a Break
• Teach taking structured breaks without avoidance.
Example Script:
"I am feeling really angry and I need to take a break before I say or do something I will regret.
I’m going to take 30 minutes to cool down. When I come back, and if you are willing, I would
like to continue this conversation."
7. Assign Skills Practice
