St. Augustine was a Latin philosopher, theologian, and bishop in the 4th-5th centuries who was highly influential in the development of Western Christianity. He developed the concept of the Catholic Church as distinct from earthly authority. He believed the human mind needs divine illumination to understand truth. While his writings influenced medieval thought, he also had extreme views on sexuality that blamed women and led him to advocate controlling them to limit tempting men.
Augustine of Hippo also known as Saint Augustine, Saint Austin, or Blessed Augustine, was an early Christian theologian and philosopher whose writings influenced the development of Western Christianity and Western philosophy.

Main Sources of Our Knowledge on St. Augustine's LifeAngelica Reyes
Augustine of Hippo, also known as Saint Augustine, is one of the most important and well-known theologians in the history of the Christian religion. Augustine has one of the most dramatic conversions ever in the Church, a change of belief and behavior, which led to his most influential written works, Confessions and the City of God.
Justin asks the Jewish Rabbi Trypho why he needs philosophy when he can profit from Moses, his lawgiver, and the prophets. Trypho responds, “Why not? Do not the philosophers turn every discourse on God? Do not questions continually arise on God’s unity and providence? Is it not truly the duty of philosophy to investigate the Deity?”
How do the Jewish Scriptures and Greek philosophy relate to the Good News, the Gospel of Jesus Christ? Do they conflict with the Gospel? Can Christians profitably study Jewish Scripture and Greek philosophy? These are the questions this dialogue explores, and St Justin the Martyr was one of the first of apostolic fathers to explore these issues. They also discuss the Greek understanding of the Underworld and life after death.
The primary question Trypho asks Justin is why Christian converts do not undergo circumcision, which could be considered a sacrament to Jews. This is also related to a key question, Should Christians also convert to Judaism and the Jewish ritual laws? We discuss:
• Some interesting biblical stories with Moses, Zipporah, and the sons of Judah that show how central circumcision was to Judaism.
• The views of St Augustine on circumcision.
• Why Greeks and Romans were so repulsed by circumcision, and contrasting attitudes about nakedness between the modern world and the ancient Greco-Roman world.
• How Christians believe that circumcision of the heart, rather than physical circumcision, is what God desires.
• Why early Christians so adamantly opposed physical circumcision.
• How this debate is part of the larger discussion of how Christianity is the New Israel, how Christians are under the New Covenant with the coming of Christ.

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

St. Augustine
Augustine of Hippo
Aurelius Augustinus Hipponensis
November 13, 354 – August 28, 430
Bishop of Hippo Regius present-day Annaba, Algeria
Latin philosopher and theologian from the Africa
Province of the Roman Empire
• One of the greatest Christian thinkers of all times
• His writings were very influential in the development
of Western Christianity.
3.
4. • When the Western Roman Empire was
starting to disintegrate, Augustine developed
the concept of the Catholic Church as a
spiritual City of God (in a book of the same
name), distinct from the material Earthly City.
His thoughts profoundly influenced the
medieval worldview. Augustine's City of
God was closely identified with the Church,
the community that worshiped the Trinity.
5.
6. • Illuminationism is
a doctrine in theology according to which the
process of human thought needs to be aided
by God. It is the oldest and most influential
alternative to naturalism in the theory of
mind and epistemology. It was an important
feature of ancient Greek
philosophy, Neoplatonism, medieval philosophy,
and in particular, the Illuminationist school
of Persian Islamic philosophy.
7.
8. • "The mind needs to be enlightened by light
from outside itself, so that it can participate in
truth, because it is not itself the nature of
truth. You will light my lamp, Lord and "You
hear nothing true from me which you have
not first told me”.
9. • Augustine's version of illuminationism is not
that God gives us certain information, but
rather gives us insight into the truth of the
information we received for ourselves
10. Sexuality and Saint Augustine
• Augustine's view of sexual feelings as sinful
impacted his view of women. His beliefs on this
issue were so extreme that he considered a man’s
erection to be sinful because it did not take place
under his conscious control. Rather than resolve
his internal struggle with his own sexuality, he
blamed women for being "stimulating." His
solution was to place controls on women to limit
their ability to influence men: “Thus the woman,
but not the man, should veil herself to prevent
her from causing this sinful response in the
male.”
11. Saint Augustine Quotes
• Pray as though everything depended on God.
Work as though everything depended on you.
• The World is a book, and those who do not
travel read only a page.
• Do you wish to rise? Begin by descending. You
plan a tower that will pierce the clouds? Lay
first the foundation of humility.
12. The concept of time and Saint
