St. Augustine is the oldest city in the United States, founded by Pedro Menendez de Aviles. Fort Mose was the first free African American settlement in the US, where Africans had to convert to Catholicism and swear loyalty to Spain. The St. Augustine Lighthouse, built as a watch post in 1683, was converted to Florida's first lighthouse in 1824 to protect the city from the British in neighboring states.
