The Study Coordinator Apprenticeship and Mentoring Program (SCAMP) was developed to provide rigorous training for clinical research coordinators through traditional education, mentoring, hands-on learning, and work assignments. SCAMP hired its initial cohort of four apprentices in 2012. Through a variety of educational activities and intensive mentoring, the apprentices gained significant human subjects research knowledge and experience. Investigators found the SCAMP apprentices were high-functioning, efficient members of their research teams who had shorter learning curves than outside coordinators. Demand for SCAMP apprentices exceeded capacity due to their positive impact. The program aims to expand to meet this demand and continue providing intensive coordinator training.
