we came under the banner of Periyar University.
The Affiliating University creates the curriculum, and the College successfully develops, implements, and
provides the programme. The college offers 18 Undergraduate, 9 Postgraduate, 7 M.Phil., 1 Ph.D., 55
Certificate Courses, and 39 Value-Added Courses. In order to emphasize the responsibility of instilling
admirable value systems among students, 51 courses in the curriculum directly and indirectly incorporate cross
cutting topics pertinent to professional ethics, gender, human values, environment, and sustainability. The
curriculum includes internships, industrial projects, assignments, and seminars which help to provide
experiential knowledge among the students.
In addition, the institution offers 94 Certificate Courses, including Value-Added categories related to skill
and entrepreneurship development, with maximum student enrolment to cover the most recent advancements
not covered in the curriculum. The College provides the aforementioned programmes on a semester basis,
through the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS), and through the Outcome Based Course Framework.

transparently displayed in the college official website every year.

skilling and re-skilling practices.

Institutional preparedness for NEP
1. Multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary: In both academic and co-curricular activities,
Bharathiyar Arts and Science College for Women has
always aimed for a multidisciplinary approach.
Students are encouraged to participate in minor/major
projects that are multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary in
nature by forming teams from various courses.
Students are also enthusiastic to establish teams of
students from diverse fields to compete in activities.
2. Academic bank of credits (ABC): We motivate our students to attend online courses via
national schemes such as SWAYAM, NPTEL, and
others, and credits gained against elective courses are
being considered. Curriculum revision has begun for
Page 18/105 24-06-2022 02:28:43
Self Study Report of BHARATHIYAR ARTS AND SCIENCE COLLEGE FOR WOMEN
the academic year 2021-2022. These changes will
affect students starting in the 2021-22 academic year.
We are working on a technology that will allow us to
do ABC in its real spirit.
3. Skill development: Through Bharathiyar farm, we provide training to
farmers on modern agricultural techniques. Farmers
and aspiring candidates are interested in studying the
most up-to-date farming techniques, such as Organic
Farming and Terrace Gardening. Mini projects, in
which students identify their skills to manufacture
certain items and understand the topics through
experiential learning, are currently being offered to
students. We are also planning for skill-based
certificate courses for dropout students from outside
which will train them in specialized skills.
4. Appropriate integration of Indian Knowledge
system (teaching in Indian Language, culture, using
online course):
Knowledge from ancient India to current India will
be included in the Indian Knowledge System, as well
as a clear sense of India's future aspirations in
education, health and the environment. In the coming
years, we plan to provide more training and awarding
of certificates in Indian Knowledge System to our
students.
5. Focus on Outcome based education (OBE): On our website and in prominent areas throughout
the departments, we have clearly defined Program
Outcomes (PO), Program Educational Outcomes
(PEO), and Course Outcomes (CO). The OBE
achievement model is used to evaluate students.
6. Distance education/online education: With the imposition of lockdown across the country
owing to the spread of coronavirus since March 2020,
online classes have become the 'new normal' and
have taken center stage in students' lives. This 'new
normal' is a reformed educational model, with online
learning at its heart. Students can attend classes from
any location of their choice and colleges can reach
out to a large network of students instead of being
limited by physical limits. Students can clear up their
doubts by participating in live conversations or
forums from the comfort and safety of their home. On
the positive note, online learning has improved the
technological literacy of both faculty members and
students. During lockdown, a variety of mobile phone
and computer applications and technology-based
programmes have emerged as an alternative to
traditional classroom instruction. Computers and
smartphones were quickly adopted by both the
Page 19/105 24-06-2022 02:28:44

instructor and the student communities. On the other
hand, while we all recognize India's physical and
cultural diversity, it also suffers from a significant
economic disparity. Due to several constraints such
as power supply, internet connectivity, and price of
necessary gadgets, access to online education remains
a struggle for many. To address these challenges, an
institutional level plan that is both robust and
comprehensive is required. In the middle of the
pandemic's chaos, online education has emerged as a
viable option. It has evolved into a need rather than a
choice. As a result, improving the quality of online
teaching–learning is critical. EdTech start-ups are
quickly gaining traction in the online education
market, with the goal of disrupting the industry.
During this crisis, many of them are seizing every
opportunity by providing free online courses to
students.

1.1.1 The Institution ensures effective curriculum delivery through a well planned and documented
process
Response:
Bharathiyar Arts and Science College for Women has achieved tremendous success in
delivering comprehensive education to young and aspiring economically weaker women
students from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds.
The college follows the CBCS - curriculum prescribed by the Affiliated University. The
curriculum is updated on a regular basis.
Faculty members’ responsibilities are assigned based on the course list and reasons for
willingness to handle subjects.
The timetable committee, which consists of faculty members from all departments, prepares
class time tables and staff time tables to ensure that all classes run effectively.
Unit plans are prepared well in advance to complete the portions in a stipulated time period
and submitted to the head of the institution for approval. The classes are followed as per the
plan with complete preparation of the topic which include in the class room interaction, doubt
clarifications, printed materials, e-notes, power point presentations and e-contents for the
respective subjects.
The college offers variety of practical and external facilities inside the campus to amplify the
self-understanding skill through LAB, ICT Classrooms, Library, digital library access such
as e-journals, e-resources, N-List, Delnet, CDs.

Exam I and II, two assignments are given for each subject and seminar classes are given to
the students for learning process. Internal marks are provided to all the students for each
subject based on CIA test, Attendance, Assignments or Seminars.
The CIA approach provides students with multi-dimensional training for university
examinations. Students are divided into three groups based on their performance on CIA
papers: slow, average, and advanced learners.
Remedial Classes are offered to the slow learners with due special attention providing simple
forms of materials and practice on important topics of the courses.
Advanced learners are encouraged to compete in curricular-related activities such as quizzes
and paper presentations both inside and outside of the college.
Mentor-Mentee system is adapted to create a parental guidance to each mentee for providing
better suggestions on the academic and other issues which also helps to redress the grievances
related to internal and external examinations. The college offered various online platforms to
conduct classes and programmes also during the pandemic time.
Every year, 100 Percent Attendance holders are recognized during Annual Day celebrations
to encourage their participation throughout the curriculum process.
Students are offered practical exposure through field visits, internships, in-plant training via
industrial collaborations called as MoUs.

1.1.2 The institution adheres to the academic calendar including for the conduct of CIE
Response:
At the beginning of every academic year, the University publishes a yearly calendar on its
website, which contains basic information on the year's major academic activities Accordingly, the
IQAC creates a College Academic Calendar based on input from coordinators and posts it on the
College website.
The examination, which receives adequate attention, becomes the focus of the semester's
activities. The CIA schedule is created by the Examination Committee using the University's
recommended minimum number of working days.
Once the calendar is finalised, the IQAC prepares the College Academic Calendar with the
support of department coordinators, which contains vital information regarding the
semester's teaching programme and events.
The IQAC pays close attention to students' holistic development. As a result, academic, co-
curricular and extra-curricular activities are all scheduled on the calendar. Faculty and
students are aware of and adhere to the activity schedule.
ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES
For academic activities, each department prepares an academic planner that is a subset of the
College calendar.
The calendar makes covering the material in a systematic manner much easier. Internal
written tests, practical exams and Viva-voce examinations are all listed on the academic
calendar.
A Bridge Course in Mathematics and English is held at the beginning of the academic year to
assist students who did not choose Mathematics in 12th grade or who are learning in the
regional language as their medium of instruction in coping with the rigours of undergraduate
courses.
CIA examinations are held according to the academic calendar's schedule for all UG and PG
students.
The outcomes of each assessment are examined, and Slow and Advanced Learners are
Page 25/105 24-06-2022 02:28:44

identified. Remedial lectures are given to those who desire additional assistance.
Experiential learning courses for Project Work, Field Work, In-Plant Training and Lab
Practicals are available in all the UG and PG programmes. The schedule is planned in
advance and communicated to students so that they can complete their project works in a
stipulated time.
CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
The Calendar also includes activities such as field trips, study tours, and
industrial visits.
The College offers value added / certificate courses such as Role of Insurance in economic

Activities with the help of faculty members, which enables students to showcase their talents
in co-curricular activities.
Internships and LIVE projects in the workplace are strongly encouraged for students.
Because there is an academic schedule in place, students may complete these assignments in
the allotted time, allowing them to strike a perfect balance between academics and
extracurricular activities.
EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
The College has a variety of clubs and committees that run various activities and events
during the academic year in order to maximise students' overall development.

2.5 Evaluation Process and Reforms
2.5.1 Mechanism of internal assessment is transparent and robust in terms of frequency and mode
Response:
The institution is affiliated with Periyar University, which has established rules for the activities that
must be evaluated, and the outcomes of these activities are calculated as internal marks. The examination
process at the college is focused on the exam cell. In theory topics, it administrates three unit tests and
two model exams and in practical areas, it administrates one model exam. The department will conduct
internal assessments on all subjects based on the students internal test results. For both conceptual and
practical subjects, the continuous evaluation approach is used. The criteria for evaluation will be held at
regular intervals according to the academic calendar. The timetable for the assessment test will be prepared
by the exam cell and displayed on the college notice board and circulated to the students.
Page 38/105 24-06-2022 02:28:44
Self Study Report of BHARATHIYAR ARTS AND SCIENCE COLLEGE FOR WOMEN
Teachers ensure that the students are aware of the internal assessment evaluation criteria. They are
discussed in detail in order to improve transparency ,insist on strict standards and rigor and to concentrate
on their individual and original work.
The criterion is objective and transparent, devoid of any bias on the part of the teacher.
Student performance is regularly assessed through assignments and tests, and students are given
ample opportunities to improve.
Staff meetings are conducted periodically to assess and review the evaluation process as well as to
address any exam related issue that may arise.
The subject in charge reviews answer scripts after an examination begins and ensures that they
contain no errors and guides students to improve their performance during the next exam.
Students are free to interact with the teacher to resolve grievances, if any regarding the
assessment.
Students are informed about the schedule for completing their assignments earlier so as to prepare
them in advance. Students who miss the assignments due to illness or participation in
extracurricular activities of the college are given the opportunity to complete them later. They are
encouraged to make use of the physical library and online resources.
Seminars are conducted on a regular basis. The students are informed of their topic and the date in
advance. The faculty ensures the students have enough time for their preparation. All the students
are given the opportunity to present their topics in seminars, which are evaluated based on their
performance. The marks are awarded and the feedback is given on the completion of every seminar.
In a similar fashion, quiz programmes are organized and evaluated.
As per the guidelines, the results of internal theory examinations, submission of assignments and
participation in seminars, quizzes, and attendance percentage are incorporated into the final internal marks,
which are submitted to the university through the Web portal.
According to the rules of the government of Tamil Nadu, the university semester exams and practical
schedule were postponed due to the COVID pandemic situation in 2019–20 and 2020–21. Internal
assessment exams were carried out only online during this period.
25% of the total marks are allotted for internal marks. For a 100-mark paper, 25 marks of internal
marks are given as follows: 10 marks for IA, plus 10 marks for assignment (project, presentations), and 5
marks for attendance. Final examinations are conducted by the university and evaluated centrally.

Response:
The institution ensures that all the evaluation reforms are carried out according to plan so that the
results can be announced on time. Internal and external examinations are conducted at the college. The
affiliated university is in charge of external examinations, while the college is in charge of internal
assessments. Assignments, internal assessments, and seminars are all part of the internal examination.
For conducting the internal assessment test, a department level coordinator/committee is constituted
for smooth conduction of internal assessment. Three internal assessment tests are conducted each
semester at department level.
Time table for test is prepared well in advance and communicated to the students earlier.
A proper seating plan is followed for internal assessment tests and it is displayed on the notice
board. After evaluation of internal assessment answer scripts, the scripts are shown to the students
to check any discrepancy or doubt in checking. If they come across any doubts, clarification is
given by faculty to enable them to fare better in future.
Internal audits are carried out with the utmost care, transparency and impartiality. The monthly test,
internal assessment, model test, seminar presentation, assignments and attendance percentage are
used to determine internal grades.
With respect to Internal exams, if students are not able to write the exam because of unavoidable
reasons they can write requisition letter to HOD concerned. After the approval of HOD concerned,
students are allowed to write the re-exams.
Internal marks and attendance are regularly communicated to the students after every internal
assessment.
The answer sheets are given to the students after evaluation to correct their mistakes and advise
them to prepare for the next examination. The college ensures transparency in the evaluation
process.
The final internal assessment marks calculated on the basis of attendance, marks of class test and
assignment marks, and are uploaded on university ERP at the end of semester.
Any grievances related to university question paper like out of syllabus areas, repeated questions,
improper split of marks, marks missed, wrong question number during semester exams are
addressed to the center superintendent and the same reported to the university immediately through
center controller (University representative).
The university website and college bulletin board are used to announce semester results. After the
results have been declares, there is a provision for re-totaling and revaluation. If student has any
grievances related to evaluation of university answer scripts, student can apply for challenge
evaluation/scrutiny. University declared the result of challenge evaluation/scrutiny after

displayed on website and communicated to teachers and students.
Response:
The curriculum of all programmes offered in the college strictly follows the norms of the Periyar
University. The curriculum was designed to include programme outcomes, program-specific
outcomes, and course outcomes. The College Prospectus highlights the learning outcomes of the
courses provided right away, so students are aware of the course objectives and what is expected of
them in terms of learning outcomes.
The admission Committee assists students to understand the courses to be taken so that they can
choose which courses best suit them. Also, during the Student Induction programme at the
beginning of each academic Session, teachers representing their various departments update
students on the POs and COs of the courses in which they have enrolled.
Program Outcomes, Program-Specific Outcomes, and course results were all included in the
curriculum. Faculty that succeeds at teaching and learning employ a range of strategies and various
methods. To help pupils learn, they use technology tools in their classes. Teachers from various

the student Induction event at the start of each Academic Session.
The Choice-Based Credit System was implemented with continuous refinements and revisions of
the curriculum made by the University in 2012, 2017 and 2021. CBCS is a method of the Centric
learning process that helps teachers deliver their course contents, conduct various activities, and
learn more skills in their domain subjects. The offered courses comprise of Foundation Tamil and
English, Core Course, Elective Course, Skill-Based Elective Course, and Extra-disciplinary Course.
This pattern paves the way for the students to opt for their subjects in elective papers and it is
structured for the betterment of the students.
The outcomes of the programme are transparent and their capabilities can be seen at the time of
graduation. The knowledge of the students in their domain subjects and their level of understanding
of the basic concepts in the subject areas are taken up as challenging research problems in
multidisciplinary fields.
The importance of the learning outcomes has been communicated to the teachers in every IQAC
Meeting and Institution Committee Meeting. The students are also made aware of the same through
Tutorial Meetings.
The OBE aims to bridge the gap between undergraduate and graduate students and is evaluated by
student assignments, seminar presentations, quizzes and models shown during the mid-semester.

Majority of the students need financial assistance to continue their studies. 1.3 CRITERIA WISE SUMMARY Curricular Aspects The College was initially affiliated to University of Madras and later when a New University named after E.V.Ramasamy the great social reformer affectionately called as Periyar by Tamil Society, came into existence, we came under the banner of Periyar University. The Affiliating University creates the curriculum, and the College successfully develops, implements, and provides the programme. The college offers 18 Undergraduate, 9 Postgraduate, 7 M.Phil., 1 Ph.D., 55 Certificate Courses, and 39 Value-Added Courses. In order to emphasize the responsibility of instilling admirable value systems among students, 51 courses in the curriculum directly and indirectly incorporate cross cutting topics pertinent to professional ethics, gender, human values, environment, and sustainability. The curriculum includes internships, industrial projects, assignments, and seminars which help to provide experiential knowledge among the students. In addition, the institution offers 94 Certificate Courses, including Value-Added categories related to skill and entrepreneurship development, with maximum student enrolment to cover the most recent advancements not covered in the curriculum. The College provides the aforementioned programmes on a semester basis, through the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS), and through the Outcome Based Course Framework. Through multiple methods and a well-structured learner-centric domain, the institution promotes successful curriculum delivery. By preparing Lesson & Teaching Plans and supplying Course Materials for the students, the curriculum delivery is planned well in advance and implemented efficiently. Feedback from Students, Teachers, Alumae and Employers are collected on curriculum and its delivery and other relevant areas are analyzed, reported, and acted upon every academic year regularly under the ECHO (Effective Criticism and Healthy Outcomes) Practice. The Feedback analyses and action taken reports are transparently displayed in the college official website every year. On the other hand, while we all recognize India's physical and cultural diversity, it also suffers from a significant economic disparity. Due to several constraints such as power supply, internet connectivity, and price of necessary gadgets, access to online education remains a struggle for many. To address these challenges, an institutional level plan that is both robust and comprehensive is required. In the middle of the pandemic's chaos, online education has emerged as a viable option. It has evolved into a need rather than a choice. As a result, improving the quality of online teaching–learning is critical. EdTech start-ups are quickly gaining traction in the online education market, with the goal of disrupting the industry. During this crisis, many of them are seizing every opportunity by providing free online courses to students. Page 20/105 24-06-2022 02:28:44
