Mercury exists in metallic, inorganic, and organic forms. Metallic mercury is used in thermometers and fluorescent lamps and can cause pollution when used for gold mining. Organic mercury, specifically methyl mercury, forms from inorganic mercury in nature and accumulates up the food chain in fish and shellfish. Certain large predatory fish like swordfish and tuna can contain high levels of mercury due to its accumulation in the food chain. Mercury is distributed throughout the body with higher concentrations in the liver and kidneys. It is slowly excreted from the body over time through urine and stool.
