Mercury exists in several forms including metallic, inorganic, and organic. Metallic mercury is used in thermometers and fluorescent lamps and causes environmental pollution when used in gold mining. Inorganic mercury is used to make organic mercury through microorganisms in nature, accumulating in fish and shellfish up the food chain. Mercury pollution involves the absorption and long-term storage of mercury, especially methyl mercury, in organs like the liver and brain over many months. High levels of mercury are found in large predatory fish and whales due to biomagnification through the marine food chain.
