Courbet was a French painter born in 1841 who became known as the banner of realism painting. He admired the works of 17th century Spanish painter Velazquez and copied his works at the Louvre, helping form his own realistic painting style. Courbet's realism emerged in 19th century France during a time of growing inequality and corruption, and his works reflected on the importance of everyday civilian life, such as his 1854 painting "The Stone Breakers" depicting ordinary workers.
