5. Caravaggio was born as Michelangelo Merisi
in Italy around 1571.
He became orphan when he was 11 and
apprenticed to a painter in Milan.
He moved to Rome, where his work became
popular for his tenebrism technique: he
used shadows to emphasize lighter areas.
His career, however, was short. Caravaggio
killed a man during a brawl and fled Rome.
He died not long after, on July 18, 1610.
Basket of Fruit (c.1599)
is a painting which hangs in
the Ambrosian Library, Milan.
It shows a wicker basket perched on
the edge of a ledge which contains a
selection of summer fruit.
