ENGAGEMENT AND
EXPERIENCE
Central to the work of NHS Improvement is the delivery and design of health services around the
needs of patients and carers. The way to achieve this is through meaningful involvement and the
development of partnerships between patients, carers and healthcare staff to shape current and
future service delivery.

Working with clinical networks and NHS organisations across England, we support clinical teams and
managers, providing practical tools and techniques that transform, deliver and build lasting improvements
across care pathways. Improvements that make a difference to patients, services and staff not only stroke but
also in cancer, diagnostics, heart, and lung services, meeting the quality, innovation, productivity and
prevention goals as part of the QIPP agenda.

   Patient and Public Engagement (PPE) in South Central - A Step Change

   In 2011, South Central Cardiovascular Network were       Key learning

 Heart and Stroke Network

 A resource for patients, carers, family
 and friends affected by stroke
 Directory of Services in Shropshire.

 Shropshire and Staffordshire Heart and Stroke
 Network have developed and published an
 excellent resource for patients, family and
 friends affected by stroke. Its aim is to provide
 help, advice and support to allow individuals to self
 care. Research shows that supporting self care can
 improve health outcomes and increase patient
 satisfaction.

 The handbook has been produced in collaboration between NHS staff working in stroke
 services, patients and carers across Shropshire and is supported by Shropshire County PCT.

                                            Stroke Association Community Voices

                                              A three year project funded by the Department of
                                              Health, Community Voices involved working closely
                                              with stroke survivors and carers, NHS Improvement,
                                              stroke networks, regional Stroke Association staff
                                               and other health and social care professionals to
                                               encourage survivors and carers to engage with
                                               commissioners and providers. A key outcome of the
                                                work is the development of The Stroke Involvement
                                                Charter. The charter lays out what stroke survivors and
                                                carers need in order to make the engagement they are
                                                involved in effective.

                                                 Community Voices was an England only project and
                                                 focused on engagement with the NHS. However we
                                                 believe that these materials are useful to anyone who
                                                  wants to use their experiences to improve the way that
                                                  care and services are commissioned, planned and
                                                  delivered.

Spotlight on patient and public engagement and experience in stroke care

NHS NHS Improvement Stroke SPOTLIGHT ON: PATIENT AND PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT AND EXPERIENCE Central to the work of NHS Improvement is the delivery and design of health services around the needs of patients and carers. The way to achieve this is through meaningful involvement and the development of partnerships between patients, carers and healthcare staff to shape current and future service delivery. Working with clinical networks and NHS organisations across England, we support clinical teams and managers, providing practical tools and techniques that transform, deliver and build lasting improvements across care pathways. Improvements that make a difference to patients, services and staff not only stroke but also in cancer, diagnostics, heart, and lung services, meeting the quality, innovation, productivity and prevention goals as part of the QIPP agenda. SPOTLIGHT ON: NHS PATIENT AND PUBLIC NHS Improvement ENGAGEMENT AND Stroke EXPERIENCE Shropshire and Staffordshire Heart and Stroke Network A resource for patients, carers, family and friends affected by stroke Directory of Services in Shropshire. Shropshire and Staffordshire Heart and Stroke Network have developed and published an excellent resource for patients, family and friends affected by stroke. Its aim is to provide help, advice and support to allow individuals to self care. Research shows that supporting self care can improve health outcomes and increase patient satisfaction. The handbook has been produced in collaboration between NHS staff working in stroke services, patients and carers across Shropshire and is supported by Shropshire County PCT. To view the booklet in full go to: www.networks.nhs.uk/nhs-networks/shropshire-and-staffordshire- heart-and-stroke/patient-public/DOS%20Final%20March%202012v2.pdf Stroke Association Community Voices A three year project funded by the Department of Health, Community Voices involved working closely with stroke survivors and carers, NHS Improvement, stroke networks, regional Stroke Association staff and other health and social care professionals to encourage survivors and carers to engage with commissioners and providers. A key outcome of the work is the development of The Stroke Involvement Charter. The charter lays out what stroke survivors and carers need in order to make the engagement they are involved in effective. Community Voices was an England only project and focused on engagement with the NHS. However we believe that these materials are useful to anyone who wants to use their experiences to improve the way that care and services are commissioned, planned and delivered.
