I spent a week preparing my speech from making a PowerPoint to deciding what I was going to say
in front of the class. What I might have done is change the hook to a more common question or into
the theme of Halloween just for the extra kicks into the presentation. An additional change would be

It is not completely clear, but it was straightforward and far easier than the alternative because my
time was running out. In my opinion, I leave my audiences an impression since I ended it on the
fly, I never really gave much thought on how I was going to end the speech that would connect to
the audience in a way that they would remember and hear the words for a longer period of time
after the day of the speech. My strengths were the introduction of my speech and the key points.
The transition I need to improve on, while the conclusion I need to revise on since it seems too
out of place. The delivery method does fit the mood toward the speech because the presentation is
based on informative speech that making Topical delivery the top choice since it divides main

J.K. Rowling's 2008 Harvard Commencement Speech J.K. Rowling, famous for writing the Harry
Potter series, presented her commencement speech to Harvard on June of 2008. She had people from
graduates to non–graduates gather before her. She gave an inspiring speech on the "importance of
imagination" and "benefits of failure" (Rowling). She describes her main points effectively to the
audience by using strategies such as ethos, logos, and pathos as well as tone. In Rowling's
speech, she uses ethos by sharing her life experiences to show that failure is inevitable. Rowling has

creates a bond to the audience reminding them that she has been in their place and remembers what

nerves of going into the real world. She shows them that even she has felt the same feelings.
Rowling, also, presents a more serious tone to the audience. For example, in her two main points
of the "benefits of failure" and the "importance of imagination", she tries to motivate those
watching that failing is a part of life and she has failed many times. She tells us "Failure taught
me things about myself... found out that I had friend whose value was truly above the price of
rubies." (Rowling). Using the same tone, she provides the audience with the "importance of
imagination". Since she is giving a speech to such an elite school, she believes they have not
experienced failure but the fear is what scares them. The fear is of them failing when they are

justifiable. Another appeal Mark Antony utilizes is logos, or logic. To elaborate, Antony temps the
citizens with the will of Caesar, "Here's a parchment with the seal of Caesar./ I found it in his closet;
'tis his will" (3.2.125–126). The use of the parchment is to entice the citizens into wanting to know
more about Caesar. His will is very generous and makes him look like a gracious and giving ruler,
which is the exact opposite of what the conspirators thought. The factual evidence presented in the
will provides the citizens with the rage they need to revolt against the conspirators. In brief, Pathos,
Ethos, and Logos help Antony gain the citizens support and convey his counterpoints to the
audience of his speech. Mark Antony's funeral speech incorporates the rhetorical devices of
sarcasm, irony, and repetition to turn the people of Rome. The ironic use of repetition slowly
displaced the conspirators. To exemplify, Mark Antony repeatedly calls the conspirators, "
honorable men" (3.2.79). The habit of repeating the word 'honorable' is extremely sarcastic, and
Antony is purposefully overusing the word on account that it makes the citizens question the
legitimacy of the murder. As a result, the crowd wonders if the conspirators are allowed to get away

This is the speech delivered by President Bill Clinton at the annual White House prayer breakfast on
Friday, September 11, 1998, to an audience of more than 100 ministers, priests and other religious
leaders. First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton was also in attendance.
The speech, written in long hand by the president, was delivered at the beginning of a day of
tremendous political and personal turmoil surrounding the publication of the first report to Congress
by Independent Counsel Ken Starr. The Starr Report, published on the Internet about 2 p.m. on
Friday, laid the grounds for possible impeachment of the president, accusing Clinton of perjury,

Clinton takes great care to mention the American public and how he is continually making efforts to
lead the country. This covers himself for any later accusations that he is overly concerned with his
own problems, and not with those of the nation.
In the speech, the President mentions the word "repent" four times, "forgiveness" three times, and
eludes to his own sin more times than could be counted. All three ideas lend further to the sympathy
issue. Which it seems, was Clinton's primary intention.
I thought that the passage used form the book "Gates of Repentance" was very appropriate for the
situation. It was also good that the President referred to more than one religion. He mentions prayers
to God and forgiveness received from the Catholic clergy, and then continues the religious theme by
directly quoting from a Jewish, Yom Kippur liturgy. Again, Clinton was careful to relate himself to
the common person, careful not to exclude or connect himself to only one group. Throughout the
entire speech, he uses simple, every–day language that can be easily understood by the most
educated scholar to the average member of society. Again, this allows more room to reach the
people, regardless of class or religion.
In his closing statements, the President asks for assistance and forgiveness. In my
