The diversity of living creatures on our planet is extraordi- nary—and thus, trying to understand how those organisms function, and how and why they do the things they do, is an awesome challenge. To make the challenge a bit more manageable, we traditionally divide the study of biology into many categories, some based on methodology (e.g., “microscopy” or “molecular biology”), some on function (e.g., “ecology” or “physiology”), and some on relatedness among the things that are to be studied (e.g., “ornithology” or “herpetology”). At first sight, this last way of slicing the cake seems a bit old-fashioned—surely we can simply ask the same questions and use the same methods, regard- less of what kind of organism we might be studying? If so, are traditional taxonomy-based divisions just historical relics of the early naturalists, doomed to eventual extinc- tion by the rise of powerful conceptual and methodologi- cal advances? Nothing could be further from the truth. Entrancing as the new approaches and conceptual divisions are, the real- ity of life on Earth is that organisms do fall into instantly recognizable types. Few people would mistake a tree for a lizard, or a whale for an insect. The reason is simple: Evo- lution is an historical process that creates biodiversity by the accumulation of small changes along genealogies, with the vast majority of species becoming extinct during that process. So the end result at any time in Earth’s history is a series of terminal branches from the great tree of life—terminal branches that form larger branches, that in turn coalesce to form even larger branches, and so forth. All the species within each of those larger branches share common ancestors not shared by any species on the other branches, and as a result, the species within each branch resemble each other in many ways. For example, no amphibian embryo grows up with an amniotic membrane around it in the egg, whereas every reptile embryo has one. The evolutionary conservatism of major characteristics such as metabolic rates, reproductive modes, feeding structures, and the like in turn have imposed evolutionary pressures on myriad other features—and the end result is that the diversity of life is packaged into a meaningful set of categories. That is the reason why most of us can easily distinguish a frog from any other kind of animal
and can even tell the difference between a crocodile and a lizard. And it is a major reason why there is immense value in defining a scientific field based on evolutionary relatedness of the creatures being studied, not just on methods or concepts. So “herpetology” is a useful cate- gory: If we really want to understand what animals do, we can’t ignore the history behind each type of organism. Abstract Men who have sex with men (MSM) are the group
mostatriskforHIVandrepresentthemajorityofnewinfections
intheUnitedStates.Ratesofchildhoodsexualabuse(CSA)among
MSM have been estimated as high as 46%. CSA is associated
with increased risk of HIV and greater likelihood of HIV sexual
risk behavior. The purpose of this study was to identify the
relationships between CSA complexity indicators and mental
health, substance use, sexually transmitted infections, and HIV
sexual risk among MSM. MSM with CSA histories (n=162)
whowerescreenedforanHIVpreventionefficacytrialcompleted
comprehensive psychosocial assessments. Five indicators
ofcomplexCSAexperienceswerecreated:CSAbyfamilymember,
CSA withpenetration,CSA withphysicalinjury,CSA withintense
fear,andfirstCSAinadolescence.Adjustedregressionmodelswere
used to identify relationships between CSA complexity and
outcomes.ParticipantsreportingCSAbyfamilymemberwere
at 2.6 odds of current alcohol use disorder (OR 2.64: CI
1.24–5.63), two times higher odds of substance use disorder
(OR 2.1: CI 1.02–2.36), and 2.7 times higher odds of reporting
anSTIinthepastyear(OR2.7:CI1.04–7.1).CSAwithpenetration
wasassociatedwithincreasedlikelihoodofcurrentPTSD(OR
3.17: CI 1.56–6.43), recent HIV sexual risk behavior (OR 2.7:
CI 1.16–6.36), and a greater number of casual sexual partners
(p= 0.02). Both CSA with Physical Injury (OR 4.05: CI 1.9–
8.7) and CSA with Intense Fear (OR 5.16: CI 2.5–10.7) were
related to increased odds for current PTSD. First CSA in ado-
lescencewasrelatedtoincreasedoddsofmajordepressivedis-
order.Thesefindings suggest thatCSA,with one ormorecom-
plexities,createspatternsofvulnerabilitiesforMSM,includingpost-
traumaticstressdisorder,substanceuse,andsexualrisktaking,
and suggests the need for detailed assessment of CSA and the
development of integrated HIV prevention programs that address
mental health and substance use comorbidities.

I
n 1995, Nelson Mandela said that “In the twenty-first century,
the capacity to communicate will almost certainly be a key
human right. Eliminating the distinction between the infor-
mation-rich and information-poor is also critical to elimi-
nating economic and other inequalities…and to improve the life of
all humanity.”
Sadly we are not there yet, and it’s too often women who are short-
changed when it come to access to communications, information,
and technology in particular. The Alliance for Women in Media
Foundation (AWMF) issues this Special Report to shine a light on digital literacy, with
a particular focus on media. This Special Report addresses the gender-based knowledge
divide, with a specific focus on girls, women and workforce training. In absolute terms,
women have less access to and use information and communications technologies less
than men. As a result, a stereotype has been developed that women are rather techno-
phobic, have less interest in, and are less capable using technology. One set of opinions
and explanations for why this is ranges from to the types of toys that children play
with—dolls vs. video games—to software and technology design.

* Traffic on main arteries to facility during the starting time of the event?
* Is there both self-service and valet parking? Is it adequate for anticipated crowd? Are there other possible spill-over parking options? Prices?
* Neighborhood – safe? Appealing?
* Building appearance – does it appear well maintained?
* Porte cochere – organized or chaotic? Good signage?
* Valet efficient and welcoming? Are you offered assistance or directions?
* Doors staffed? Doormen friendly and welcoming?
* Is there a loading dock? Truck clearance, maximum truck size & height limits, charges/fees? What are the hours of dock operation?
* Is there a freight elevator needed to access event space? Number, dimensions, weight limits, proximity and route to function space?
PUBLIC SPACES or PRE-FUNCTION SPACE (there may or may not be this space, or it may be outside courtyard area, main dining area of a restaurant, bar, etc., depending upon site)
* Is area comfortable and welcoming? Adequate seating? Noise level? Pleasant lighting?
* Is there a reader board? Is it easy to locate and current?
* Elevators – if needed to access events space, how many, how fast, how clean?
* Signage adequate to find directions?
* How easy will it be to move masses of people?
* Décor, furnishings and colors?
* Is there a cloak room or coat racks available (not important in Florida, but valuable in other climates)?
FACILITY FEATURES:
* Permanent (built-in) Bars/lounges – capacities, atmosphere, hours?
* Portable bar sets – draped tables or designed portable bar unit?
* Size, dimensions, of each room/space available. Suggested capacities. Ceiling height, chandeliers, columns/pillars, décor and color, flooring, dance floor? Floor load limits?
* Number of entrances to event space? Size of the largest entrance?
* Variety of built-in lighting options? Ceiling rigging points for lighting trusses?
* Computer hook-ups? (especially helpful for registration or check-in table)
* Location of temperature controls?
* Proximity to rest rooms? Rest room capacity? Cleanliness?
* Location for a registration area? Are electric and internet available at that location?
* Presence of windows? Do they have black-out curtains?
* Built in stage? Size? Backstage area? Green room? Fly space?

Abstract
The opioid crisis that exists today developed over the past 30 years. The reasons for this are many. Good
intentions to improve pain and suffering led to increased prescribing of opioids, which contributed to
misuse of opioids and even death. Following the publication of a short letter to the editor in a major
medical journal declaring that those with chronic pain who received opioids rarely became addicted,
prescriber attitude toward opioid use changed. Opioids were no longer reserved for treatment of acute
pain or terminal pain conditions but now were used to treat any pain condition. Governing agencies began
to evaluate doctors and hospitals on their control of patients’ pain. Ultimately, reimbursement became tied
to patients’ perception of pain control. As a result, increasing amounts of opioids were prescribed, which
led to dependence. When this occurred, patients sought more in the form of opioid prescriptions from
providers or from illegal sources. Illegal, unregulated sources of opioids are now a factor in the increasing
death rate from opioid overdoses. Stopping the opioid crisis will require the engagement of all, including
health care providers, hospitals, the pharmaceutical industry, and federal and state government agencies.

here is no debate that the United
States is in the midst of an opioid
crisis. Between 1999 and 2014, drug
overdose deaths nearly tripled.1 In 2016,
more than 60,000 people died from drug
overdoses, and opioids were responsible for
most of these deaths.2 For the first time since
1999, life expectancy decreased for US citizens
compared with citizens of other developed
countries, and opioid overdoses were a factor.3
This crisis includes both prescription and
nonprescription (illegal) use of opioid drugs.
Prescription opioids include natural and semi-
synthetic opioids such as codeine and
morphine, and synthetic opioids such as
methadone, fentanyl, and tramadol. Many of
the synthetic agents such as fentanyl are man-
ufactured and distributed illegally. With the
increased availability of both prescribed and
illegally obtained opioids over the past 30
years, there has been an increase in misuse
and deaths (Figure).4
Various opioids have been available for
more than a century, and opioid misuse has
occurred during that time. Following the Civil
War, veterans who suffered severe injuries
were given morphine for pain relief. In the
late 1800s, pharmaceutical companies began

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
