SPECIAL SUIT

                           AIMS/OBJECTIVES
                           To tell and/or write a story

                           SKILLS
                           Write narratives in which students recount a short sequence of events, including details
                           to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, and provide a sense of closure; develop and
                           strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach

                           MATERIALS
                           Pens, paper

                           PROCEDURE
                           (Depending on the age group, the teacher can simplify the lesson, focusing on fewer choices
                           and/or shortening the explanation.)

                           1.	 Explain to students that it’s Mark’s birthday and his father plans to invent a special suit
                               that will give Mark the ability to do one of the following:
                               •	 Become invisible
                               •	 Grow as big as a mountain or as tiny as an ant
                               •	 Fly
                               •	 Walk on water
                               •	 Breathe underwater
                               •	 Have superhuman strength
                               •	 Travel in time (past or future)
                               •	 Communicate with animals
                               •	 Communicate with inanimate objects
                               •	 Run as fast as a train or an airplane
                               •	 Turn enemies to stone
                               •	 Breathe fire
                               •	 Anything else you can think of

                           2.	 After each student has decided which ability he or she prefers (or invents one of his or
                               her own), ask the students to consider the follow questions:
                               •	 Why did he/she (the student) choose that particular power/ability?
                               •	 What does he/she do with it?
                               •	 Where does he/she go?
                               •	 Who does he/she meet?
                               •	 Does he/she help people or just have fun?

                           3.	 Finally, ask students to outline and then write a story in which Mark spends his birthday
                               enjoying his father’s gift.

                           4.	 Remind students to write with the senses. Don’t just write about what Mark sees but
                               also what he hears, smells, tastes and touches. Also, what does he think? How does he
                               feel? Tell them their stories will be more exciting and interesting if they have Mark face
                               and overcome a problem. How does he overcome it?

                           Also remind them to give their stories a title.

                           POST ACTIVITY: Students can draw a picture of one of the scenes from their story.
