1) Transitioning patients with special health care needs from pediatric to adult oral healthcare can be challenging. The goal is to help patients reach their maximum potential through developmentally appropriate healthcare services that continue from adolescence to adulthood.
2) Most respondents said the predominant transition age was between 18-20 years for patients with SHCNs. The major barrier to transition was a lack of availability of general dentists and specialists trained to treat patients with SHCNs.
3) Educational programs for dentists need to include strategies and protocols for effectively transitioning adolescent patients with SHCNs to appropriate adult oral healthcare.

Medical conditions that can directly affect the provision of dental care and/or consequences of dental treatment. In paediatric dentistry, such children are known as children with special needs and require extra attention for maintainence of optimum oral health.
Early childhood dental caries occurs in all racial and socioeconomic groups; however, it tends to be more prevalent in children in families belonging to the low-income group, where it is seen in epidemic proportions. Dental caries results from an overgrowth of specific organisms that are a part of normally occurring human flora. Human dental flora is site specific, and an infant is not colonized until the eruption of the primary dentition at approximately 6 to 30 months of age. The most likely source of inoculation of an infant's dental flora is the mother, or another intimate care provider, shared utensils, etc. Decreasing the level of cariogenic organisms in the mother's dental flora at the time of colonization can significantly impact the child's redisposition to caries. To prevent caries in children, high-risk individuals must be identified at an early age (preferably high-risk mothers during prenatal care), and aggressive strategies should be adopted, including anticipatory guidance, behavior modifications (oral hygiene and feeding practices), and establishment of a dental home by 1 year of age for children deemed at risk.

A Síndrome de West (WS) é caracterizada pela tríade de espasmos infantis,
hipsarritmia e prejuízo cognitivo. A etiologia está ligada a distúrbios cerebrais orgânicos
cujas origens podem ser pré-natais, pós-natais ou perinatais. O objetivo deste estudo é ajudar identificar alterações sistêmicas, considerações médicas, aspectos estomatológicos e, adicionalmente, relatar dois casos de pacientes com síndrome de West. Relato de Caso: Os aspectos estomatológicos encontrados em ambos os pacientes eram o desgaste geral dos dentes, devido ao apertamento dentário e bruxismo, gengival crescimento, sequência e cronologia das erupções dentárias alteradas, palato profundo e atresia, apresentados falta de fechamento labial, lábios superiores e inferiores, bochechas e língua com tônus muscular flácido e
má oclusão. Em um paciente, múltiplas lesões de cárie também foram observadas, possivelmente associadas a o comportamento da família, a alimentação, a higiene bucal e o uso contínuo de medicamentos, com a presença de biofilme espesso, lesões de cárie estacionárias mostrando uso cariostático, o que impediu abordagem odontológica colaborativa. Conclusão: A abordagem para atendimento e tratamento odontológico são
discutido. Pacientes com Síndrome de West têm uma grande diversidade de aspectos físicos gerais e orais características, dificuldade na higiene oral devido ao atraso no desenvolvimento neuropsicomotor. Isto é importante prestar cuidados precoces, para que não necessitem de tratamentos complexos e invasivos devido a

Dr Sujoy Dasgupta presented the study on "Couples presenting to the infertility clinic- Do they really have infertility? – The unexplored stories of non-consummation" in the 13th Congress of the Asia Pacific Initiative on Reproduction (ASPIRE 2024) at Manila on 24 May, 2024.
Ethanol (CH3CH2OH), or beverage alcohol, is a two-carbon alcohol
that is rapidly distributed in the body and brain. Ethanol alters many
neurochemical systems and has rewarding and addictive properties. It
is the oldest recreational drug and likely contributes to more morbidity,
mortality, and public health costs than all illicit drugs combined. The
5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
(DSM-5) integrates alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence into a single
disorder called alcohol use disorder (AUD), with mild, moderate,
and severe subclassifications (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
In the DSM-5, all types of substance abuse and dependence have been
combined into a single substance use disorder (SUD) on a continuum
from mild to severe. A diagnosis of AUD requires that at least two of
the 11 DSM-5 behaviors be present within a 12-month period (mild
AUD: 2–3 criteria; moderate AUD: 4–5 criteria; severe AUD: 6–11 criteria).
The four main behavioral effects of AUD are impaired control over
drinking, negative social consequences, risky use, and altered physiological
effects (tolerance, withdrawal). This chapter presents an overview
of the prevalence and harmful consequences of AUD in the U.S.,
the systemic nature of the disease, neurocircuitry and stages of AUD,
comorbidities, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, genetic risk factors, and
pharmacotherapies for AUD.

• CP unclear in more than 50% of cases. The leading predictors
of CP include mental retardation and birth weight <1500 g.
• The death of one twin in utero increases the risk for CP in the
surviving twin by more than 100 times.
• CP in term infants of normal birth weight is typically related
to prenatal factors, such as , prenatal strokes.
• The existence of periventricular leukomalacia is the strongest
independent risk factor for development of cerebral pals

• Early signs include delay in meeting motor milestones,
toe walking, persistent fisting, seizures, irritability and
poor suck.

Oral Health Education in Medical and Residency Training
• A survey of pediatricians, only 36% said they had received previous
training in oral health, with 13% reporting training during medical
school. The majority of survey respondents recognized the importance
of evaluating their patients for dental caries, but only 41% felt that their
ability to identify caries was very good or excellent.
Identification of Children Who Require Referral for Dental Treatment
• Dentistry recommends that all children visit a pediatric dentist when
the first tooth comes in, usually between 6 and 12 months of age (“first

• Transitioning from a pediatric health care system to an adult centered
health care system can be challenging for young adults with SHCNs and
their families.

poorly organized and does not meet the goals of a collaborative..
• The goal of transitions with SHCNs is to help them reach their
maximum potential through developmentally appropriate health care
services that continue from adolescence to adulthood.
