The student must complete a semester project on a Spanish or Mexican artist by choosing works by Wilfredo Lam, Fernando Botero, Frida Kahlo, or Diego Rivera. The student must research three pieces by the chosen artist, including a portrait/self-portrait, landscape, and scene using only Spanish sources. They must discuss the artist's biography, style, and influences and describe each work. The student will also compare one of the chosen artist's works to a piece by a local or national artist. They will present their research before or after winter break and be assessed on their presentation, writing, and knowledge of the researched artist and unit content.

Les Demoiselles d'Avignon by Pablo Picasso has been called one of the most important works in the genesis of modern art by The Museum of Modern Art in a 2004 publication1 and the most influential work of art of the last 100 years in a 2007 article in Newsweek.2 Picasso created the work in 1907, the modern era. Determining the proper culture is difficult. He is considered a Spanish painter. There are clear Iberian and African influences presented in the painting. He painted it in Paris. The title references a brothel in Barcelona, Spain. So, for the most consistent classification, Spanish culture seems to be the most fitting.
That said, this work is less about the cultural ties to that place, and more about someone reaching for a new direction in art. The social/psychological reference within the work has been interpreted by William Rubin in his book dedicated to the work as reflecting his deep-seated fear and loathing of the female body, which existed side by side with his craving for and ecstatic idealization of it.3 If this is true, then the way the figures are distorted would certainly support that idea. However, for two reasons this work is more than just a social comment from Picasso or a psychological manifestation of his attitude toward women and more one of development of a personal, and possibly intentional new style of presenting subject matter. The early rivalry between Matisse and Picasso is well documented. It has been suggested that Matisse's Bonheur de vivre (The Joy of Life) became a challenge for Picasso's creation of Les Damoiselles d'Avignon.4 The two seemed to be competing for who would be the leader in the pursuit of Modern Art. If this work were the last one by Picasso, it may not have had the lasting impact on the world of art that it enjoys. But in his subsequent work, and others, the fragmentation and representation of subject matter in planes that defy nature began with this work. It is a new aesthetic approach that forced the viewer at that time to reconsider many aspects of what art is and how space can be redefined.
On one hand the subject matter could be viewed as a personal comment on brothels in general, but because it is clear that Picasso was in search for a new direction in modern art, it is clear that his main purpose was to influence the world of art with this new way of presenting subject matter.

Tracing a crucial history of photo-conceptual practice, The Uses of Photography focuses on an artistic community that formed in and around the University of California San Diego (UCSD), founded in 1960, and its visual arts department, founded in 1967.

How is he viewed in the American art world? What does Mr. Paniccioli have to say about his own work? What styles does he work within and why/why not has he selected this/these styles? His strong web presence should allow for multiple avenues of research.

Select, at least, two different Native theatre performing ensembles. Discuss their history, legacy and bodies of work that they have produced. To whom to do these ensembles normally perform? How are they received by the American public? Do they have international attention? Why/why not? Who are, if any, major actors to come from these ensembles? You may want to make contact with the directors/producers/performers from these different ensembles if possible.

Review two (2) works of Native literature written by a Native and non-Native author. What views of Native history, culture, art are expressed within these texts? Source Background
In 1591 Dutch engraver and goldsmith Theodor de Bry published Grand Voyages, which contained the earliest known European images of Native Americans in what is now Florida. Although Theodor de Bry never traveled to the Americas, the images he created helped to shape the European perception of Native American cultures and the land they inhabited.
For Grand Voyages and later publications de Bry relied on accounts by men like Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues, a member of the short-lived French colony in Florida, Fort Caroline. This engraving was based on an original (now lost) sketch by Le Moyne.

- 1. Spanish 3 Semester 1 Project: fall 2016 Painting: Spain & Mexico Wilfredo Lam, Fernando Botero, Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera: choose 1 of these 3 pieces by the artist, 1 of which (or + 1) that is being exhibited currently in the US (choose one that is physically closest to Laramie) o 1 Portrait or self –portrait and 1 landscape o research from Spanish sources only with ALL sources cited, minimum of 3 cited sources (combination of online, print, anecdotal interview, podcast/ video-cast etc.). i. Biographical context: historical, regional/national, social contexts etc. ii. artistic styles (define) as shown in the works chosen, influences on artist’s style iii. brief description of each painting as it relates to the artist’s style compare/contrast to 1 piece of art work comparable local, regional, national artist(s) (in consultation with Sra. Chamberlain) o 1 Portrait or self -portrait, OR 1 landscape, OR 1 scene (people, action) o research on sites written in English allowed for this part of the project, 2-3 sources cited (combination of online, print, anecdotal interview, podcast/video-cast etc.). Presentation: week prior to Winter Break (December) or week following Winter Break (January) o Anyone not completing this during the 2 weeks allotted will NOT present at all. If you are going to be absent during the two weeks of presentations, it is YOUR responsibility to arrange to present PRIOR to December 12, 2016. Grading: o Submit 4 factual questions, 1 short answer prompt, 1 essay prompt representing your research for unit assessment; due at time of presentation, all related to the research presented. Writing X1 o Timed Writing: 20” over own research,2nd week of January, no notes. Writing X3 o Assessment over unit content of all projects: matching of images, significant styles, artists, specific pieces, historical contexts etc.,2nd week of January. This will be in lieu of other Final Exam. Testing X3. o Language: see Language Rubric (target Intermediate Low+), Speaking X3 o Presentation: poise, practice, fluency, natural incorporation of media to support oral text, Speaking X2 o Original 2-D piece: incorporating characteristics of artist’s style mentioned in the presentation (drawing, painting, watercolor)

Well practiced, but NOT memorized (practice from outline or web, 3X5” card allowed during presentation with bullets or web, no sentences, single words only) b. Audio/visual media to support presentation that does not represent more than 5% of total presentation i. Options: PP, Prezi, other? ii. NO text on PP/Prezi slides other than brief title in Spanish iii. Include maps, diagrams, photos (cite on “Fuentes citadas” slide) iv. Proof read all media carefully. v. Media is used during presentation to support oral text vi. Original 2-D art piece, incorporating characteristics of researched artist (drawing, sketch, watercolor etc.) c. Will present: i. First to small group in Span. 3 class (be ready PRIOR to Winter Break (Dec. 5-9) ii. Second to entire Span. 3 class
