Proficiency levels required at the beginning of Spanish 4: Intermediate Mid in Listening & Reading
Intermediate Mid – in Writing & Speaking
Goal: to keep your Spanish skills at Intermediate Mid- levels or to even grow them a little prior to September 2019
Reading: One of your most important goals in the fall semester will be build your independent reading skills so that by second
semester, you can read a novel by yourself out of class. Note that the novel will be one NOT written for language learners but rather
for Spanish speaking young adults. What can you do to prepare?
 _____ TPRS novels levels 3 and 4. This option would work on strengthening your reading skills with level 3 and 4
TPRS novels. Read at least one book from the list of level 3 books listed below that you have NOT already read in
class and two level 4 books.
o NOTE: You will need to buy these books from the sites listed below (these cost about $5-6 each), but if you
chose, you can sell us the book at $4 each in the fall for use in our SSR/FVR libraries.
o If you think you will want to submit the work for fall READING credit in the fall, prepare a document using a
table (s) (Word?) in which you track plot, setting, characters etc.? by chapter for the entire book. Be sure to
label everything very clearly with book title, page numbers, chapter titles etc.

Listening:
 El Internado: During 2019-2020, we will be watching Seasons 1 & 2 of this mystery series set in a Spanish boarding
school. If you would like to get a head-start, you can access the series on Netflix. If you would like to earn grades for
fall semester 2019 in the category of LISTENING, take notes on each episode in Spanglish and submit to me in early
September. I will grant one listening grade for each episode watched IF the notes are adequate and follow the format
described on the hand-out I am attaching.
o IMPORTANT: Be sure to turn the closed captions to Spanish (NOT English) so that you get both listening and
reading practice.
o Notes: the easiest way to take notes on this series that constantly jumps from plot thread to plot thread is by
creating a table with the paper turned sideways (in your handwriting or on a computer) with columns. The
columns will represent plot threads (the orphans, Alfonso,

Do a few podcasts for Basic Beginner’s (2-3?) to build confidence and to get used to the style of the presenters.
Keep notes, label with episode and date, turn in next fall during first week of school. In these notes,
which MUST be legible and well labeled and organized, keeptrack of the main ideas on the left of
the paper, keepthe new vocabulary on the right side. Only add words you need to review or
learn.
o Try to do a few more at the Intermediate level also (2-3). Same instructions.
