Semester 1 Project: fall 2016
Painting: Spain & Mexico
Picasso, Dalí, Frida Kahlo, Remedios Varo, Goya, Diego Rivera: choose 1 of these
3 pieces by the artist, 1 of which (or + 1) that is being exhibited currently in the US (choose one that is physically closest to Laramie)
o 1 Portrait or self -portrait, 1 landscape, 1 scene (people, action)
o research from Spanish sources only with ALL sources cited, minimum of 3 cited sources (combination of online, print, anecdotal
interview, podcast/ video-cast etc.). For “going beyond the requirements” of the project, you are encouraged to seek out sources of
expertise from the University of Wyoming Faculty, which may be oral interview in English, record the interview. Other sources:
consult with Sra. Chamberlain
i. Biographical context: historical, regional/national, social contexts etc.
ii. artistic styles (define) as shown in the works chosen, influences on artist’s style
iii. brief description of each painting as it relates to the artist’s style
b. Another “going beyond the requirements” option for Picasso, Miró, Dalí, visit the Picasso, Chagall, Matisse, Miro
exhibit at the Loveland Museum (until November 27, 2016)
c. Or for Frida Kahlo: Ft. Collins Museum of Contemporary Art, (until January 7, 2017)
compare/contrast to 1 piece of art work comparable local, regional, national artist(s) (in consultation with Sra. Chamberlain)
o 1 Portrait or self -portrait, OR 1 landscape, OR 1 scene (people, action)
o research on sites written in English allowed, 2-3 sources cited (combination of online, print, anecdotal interview, podcast/video-
cast etc.).
Presentation: week prior to Winter Break (December) or week following Winter Break (January)
o Anyone not completing this during the 2 weeks allotted will NOT present at all. If you are going to be absent during the two
weeks of presentations, it is YOUR responsibility to arrange to present PRIOR to December 12, 2016.
Grading:
o Submit 4 factual questions, 1 short answer prompt, 1 essay prompt representing your research for unit assessment; due at time of
presentation, all related to the research presented. Writing X1
o Timed Writing: 20” over own research,2nd
week of January, no notes. Writing X3
o Assessment over unit content of all projects: matching of images, significant styles, artists, specific pieces, historical contexts
etc.,2nd
week of January. This will be in lieu of other Final Exam. Testing X3.
o Language: see Language Rubric (target Intermediate Mid +), Speaking X3
o Presentation: poise, practice, fluency, natural incorporation of media to support oral text, Speaking X2
2. Options Components of oral presentation
For one of the artists mentioned below, research 1 portrait/ self
portrait, 1 landscape, and 1 scene (people, action).

5. Goya, Spain: Barroque, Romanticism, Neoclasicism
6. Diego Rivera, Mexico: Muralism, Cubism, Mexicanidad
4” minimum-6” maximum
a. Well practiced, but NOT memorized (practice from
outline or web, 3X5” card allowed during
presentation with bullets or web, no sentences, single
words only)
b. Audio/visual media to support presentation that does
not represent more than 5% of total presentation
i. Options: PP, Prezi, other
ii. NO text on PP/Prezi slides other than brief
title in Spanish
iii. Include maps, diagrams, photos (cite on
“Fuentes citadas” slide)
iv. Proof read all media carefully.
v. Media is used during presentation to support
oral text
vi. Original 2-D art piece, incorporating
characteristics of researched artist (drawing,
sketch, watercolor etc.)
c. Will present:
i. First to small group in Span. 4 class (Dec.
5-9)
ii. Second to entire Span. 4 class
