Primary Source Presentation
(12% of course grade)
Guidelines: Primary Source In-Class Presentation:
You will receive an email in your inbox, requesting that you sign up, via Doodle Poll, to present
an assigned Primary Source on a particular day. Most students will work in pairs for these
presentations.
Your presentation of the source will be 10-12 minutes should include background on the author,
when and where the source was written, why the source was written—possible objective(s) of
the author or purpose(s) of the source—for whom the source was written, and the genre of the
source. Your goal is both to connect this primary source to the topic of the day and to explain
how this source might be used by a historian. Since you only have a limited amount of time, you
will want to be selective, succinct and organized. See the attached Rubric for details to include
and assessment criteria.
Please be sure to cover the following questions and criteria in the course of your presentation.
You do not need to address them in the following order, and, in fact, the attention you give each
of these points will vary according to your assigned primary source. However, each presentation
must address Questions 9, 10, and 11.
Items to be submitted:
Each Individual Student will submit a hard-copy of a Primary Source Evaluation for
their assigned primary source immediately before their presentation/discussion. (This

Choose a topic that is debatable and has extensive sourcing. Prior knowledge of the event may be useful, even necessary. This assignment will require that you conduct a reasonable search for documentation and support. Start early and keep good notes. Start with an internet and library search. Good pre-writing protocol requires that you take notes as you read and that you document your sources accurately. Develop a thesis statement that is narrow enough to cover in a short (1700 – 2100) word paper and debatable—make a claim of value, fact, or policy.
Choosing a topic:
You may deal with various aspects of the topic: artistic, geo-political, scientific, moral, aesthetic, cultural, social, or economic. The following suggestions on the attached list may help you choose a topic.
You may wish to take a conservative or a liberal stance on a topic. Be sure that the essay is thesis driven. The essay should be developed according to the methods discussed in class and in the textbook. The paper should be 6 - 8 pages. The paper is worth 200 points. Assignment 2: Project Paper
The Project Paper focuses on a suggested topic related to art, architecture, history, music, or literature. The project will reflect your views and interpretation of the topic. This project is designed to help you stretch your mind and your abilities to be the creative, innovative, and critical thinker you already are!
Choose one (1) of the topics from the list of topic choices below. Read the topic carefully. Write a three to four (3-4) page paper (750-1,000 words) that responds to each of the items described in the topic.
For the topic you choose:
1.
Support your ideas with specific, illustrative examples. If there are questions or points associated with your chosen topic, be sure to answer all of the listed questions and address all of the items in that topic. If your topic asks you to do several things related to the topic, be sure to do each of the things listed.
2.
While some of the topics tend to lend themselves toward particular writing genres, you are not restricted to the specific format suggested for the individual topic. For example, you may do an “interview,” a “proposal,” a “letter,” a “short story,” a “blog,” an “essay,” an “article,” or any other written genre for almost any of the topics. The project is intended to be fun as well as informative, so feel free to be creative with the delivery of your information.

Use at least three (3) good quality academic sources, with one (1) source being the class text.

Because this course is extremely condensed into 40 days, I will be posting much of the material ahead of when it is due, for students to work through at their own pace; in other words, you can work ahead as you feel like it. There are certain pieces of material, from Unit Two forward, that will be added to both the

, where focused questions and material will guide your responses. The materials will be added in time for use by the various intermediate deadlines. However, there are particular deadlines for completion of the discussion writing on the various units of material as well as the two papers that make up the grade, and students must pay close attention to these deadlines in order to complete the course.
Course Goals:
This course will examine the experience of sports and leisure for different groups of Americans (e.g., African-Americans, women, working class), from colonial times to the present but primarily focused on the 20th century. My goal is to introduce students to historical analysis and argument through the examination of the sports and leisure time activities that won increasing popularity among Americans from the late nineteenth to the late twentieth century. This course will incorporate analytical categories from social history (class, race, gender, ethnicity) as well as the frameworks used by cultural, economic, and political history. This course will thus involve students in gaining a better understanding of the relationships that sports and leisure have with the social, economic, cultural and political forces at work in the United States and the world. Students will appreciate the issues that have affected sports participation over the years, including racial and gender discrimination, class economics, and commercialization.
Students are expected to learn not only the basic data of American social history of sports but also to express that knowledge in oral and written argument that employs evidence to prove historical theses. Precise assignments for discussion are given at the end of this syllabus. Students will also be expected to use the Blackboard site for discussion. This course is thus NOT about player statistics, won-loss records, and/or fantasy leagues. It is about understanding the role sports has played in American society over time, and that is a serious historical inquiry.
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
1) Identify and analyze the changing meaning and significance of sports and leisure to American society and culture.
2) Discuss the major developments in sports as they were influenced by major social, economic, cultural and political forces in American history, and (in turn) how sports pa.

Analyzing historical events and their consequences is common research practice. In this essay, choose an historical event that is interesting to you, one that you may even be passionate about. Choose a topic that is debatable and has extensive sourcing. Prior knowledge of the event may be useful, even necessary. This assignment will require that you conduct a reasonable search for documentation and support. Start early and keep good notes. Start with an internet and library search. Good pre-writing protocol requires that you take notes as you read and that you document your sources accurately. Develop a thesis statement that is narrow enough to cover in a short (1700 – 2100) word paper and debatable—make a claim of value, fact, or policy.
Choosing a topic:
You may deal with various aspects of the topic: artistic, geo-political, scientific, moral, aesthetic, cultural, social, or economic. The following suggestions on the attached list may help you choose a topic.
You may wish to take a conservative or a liberal stance on a topic. Be sure that the essay is thesis driven. The essay should be developed according to the methods discussed in class and in the textbook. The paper should be 6 - 8 pages. The paper is worth 200 points. You will be responsible for all phases of the writing process. Research is required (6+ sources cited; websites/magazine/newspaper articles are OK but much less valuable).
Directions:
Write a 6 to 8-page historical analysis research paper (including a Works Cited page) in MLA format on the topic of an historical event. Follow the writing process as discussed in class and in the textbook. Be prepared to show every step of the process in class. Show evidence of brainstorming, note taking, outline and rough draft. Write a thesis driven analysis of the topic. The thesis, preferably a divided thesis, should make a strong statement or claim about the event. Write a multi-paragraph essay analyzing the historical event that you have chosen. The essay should be expository, with some description and narration where appropriate.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. - 1. Essay Format: You will write a persuasive essay based on three sources: an article, a table or graphic, and an audio recording. The sources may present different points of view on the same topic. Pace yourself: You will have 55 minutes to complete this task, broken down as follows: Print sources: 6 minutes to o Read the Tema curricular (to which of the 6 AP themes does this prompt pertain ) o Read the Tema del ensayo (the prompt) o Read Source 1 o Study Source 2 Up to 9 minutes to listen to the audio source (Source 3) twice Plan and write: 40 minutes to plan and write your persuasive essay, addressing the Tema del ensayo (the prompt) 4-8-19: In class, you will be given +/- 9 minutes to complete the audio source (Source 3). You will take notes in whichever fashion works best for you, focusing on the differing emphasis for the FIRST listen vs. the SECOND listen: FIRST: Listen for generalities, the sequencing of ideas, SECOND: listen for details, places, statistics (cifras), dates, specific types/ categories mentioned etc. Spanish 5: you will spend 6 minutes at home tonight completing the Print Sources (see above). Bring your notes and the beginnings of your essay outline/web to class on Tuesday, 4-9-19, when you will spend 40 minutes writing the actual essay. AP Lang: you will spend 6 minutes between today and Wednesday morning completing the Print Sources (see above). Bring your notes and the beginnings of your essay outline to class on Wednesday, 4-10-19, when you will spend 40 minutes writing the actual essay. Important: anyone absent from class on Monday will need to complete the 9 minutes of the audio using the Supersite (see Calendar to access the file), as well as complete the Print Sources (see above) BEFORE class on Tuesday/Wednesday. Anyone not prepared on Tuesday/Wednesday will still write the essay but will be penalized by having 6 minutes less than everyone else to write. These instructions will be posted on both the Spanish 5 and AP Lang wiki pages on Monday,4-8-19. Anyone absent on the long day will need to schedule 40 minutes with Sra. Chamberlain to complete the writing outside of class time. Due date: 48 hrs. within return to school, regardless of if our class meets or not.
