Spina bifida is a birth defect where the spine and spinal cord do not form properly, often resulting in an opening or gap in the spine. In the 1950s, the first effective device to control hydrocephalus in spina bifida patients was developed by an engineer father of an affected son. Spina bifida forms during fetal development and can affect the spinal cord and brain, leading to potential symptoms like difficulty swallowing, breathing problems during sleep, below average intelligence, and seizure disorders.
