Al-Andalus was the Arabic name for Moorish Iberia (Spain) which was under constant battle with Christian societies until the Portuguese Reconquista enabled Christians to seize control from the Muslims. The Reconquista was a nearly 800-year period where Christian lands were retaken from Muslims starting in 718. After defeating the last Moorish king in 1492, ending the Granada war, the Treaty of Tordesillas allowed Spain to control much of the Americas, acquiring over $1.5 trillion in gold and silver. The Spanish Golden Age saw increasing creativity in arts and literature from the late 15th century to the 17th century under the House of Habsburg.
