Productives e-learning in action
Jacqueline Morton
Head of Continuous Improvement at Southern Health & Social Care Trust
Like many Trusts, Southern Health & Social Care Trust in Northern Ireland had seen hundreds of hours
of staff time freed up through the introduction of The Productive Series, resulting in more time for
direct patient care. Having found e-learning useful in the past, Jacqueline Morton, Head of Continuous
Improvement at the Trust, was interested to see how e-learning could enhance the programme.
Feedback from members of staff – from HCA to ward sister
level – who’ve completed The Productives e-learning modules
has been overwhelmingly positive, even when prompted for
constructive criticism. The participants found the module to
be flexible, lively and easy to use with good graphics. The
interactive element made it fun to use as well as effective in
informing them about The Productive Series.
I found our pilot run to be so beneficial that I am currently
rolling out Productive Community Services (PCS) e-learning
across 50% of the Trust’s area.
The Productives e-learning is useful for different people in
different ways. I see there being two main benefits.
Firstly, on a ward with 20 members of staff, it’s only ever
feasible to send about three on The Productives workshops –
this can sometimes mean the rest of the ward sees The
Productives work as the remit of only these select individuals.
Introducing the rest of the ward to The Productives through
e-learning means it is better understood and all members of
the team feel a level of ownership for the project rather
than just the few who are leading on it.
Jacqueline said:
The e-learning modules can also help to prepare and prime
members of staff who will be involved in The Productives to
a greater degree in advance of attending the workshops. By
completing the e-learning in advance of the workshops they
can understand and digest the theory, which can make the
face-to-face workshops much more meaningful
and effective.
The Productives e-learning modules are part of the package
in effectively introducing productive working into healthcare
settings. They don’t replace the workshops, but make them
even more effective and can help the wider team to “buy-in”
to the projects.
The Productives Series provides staff with a toolkit for life –
the rollout of Productive Community Services e-learning will
affect many areas of work from managing case loads to
saving time. Along with mentoring and workshops,
e-learning is a key part of a blended approach to
empowering staff to make the changes which will improve
productivity and benefit patients.”
Staff across the Trust are eager to get involved as soon
as possible.
