2. The benefits of e-learning
What is the programme about?
The Productive Series programme is specifically designed to help frontline staff spend more time on patient care,
reduce waste and improve efficiency.
“The Productive Series is probably the
strongest product in the world for driving
change in providers (of healthcare).”
Jim Easton, National Director: Improvement and Transformation,
NHS Commissioning Board.
To supplement The Productive Series, we have produced a suite of e-learning programmes designed to increase
understanding of The Productive Series. They provide progressive learning levels designed to range from informing
an absolute beginner about what The Productive Series provides, to accrediting a leader with experience in
implementing strategic transformation within an organisation.
The content has been provided by the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement’s Productive Series experts
and currently supports four programmes:
The NHS is challenged with
improving the quality and
outcomes of healthcare against a
background of financial
reductions. Internet-based
e-learning has shown that
technology can bring the
classroom into the workplace to
enable large numbers of staff to
access training at any time, whilst
also reducing training costs.
Accessible via any computer,
e-learning is just a few clicks away.
For individuals, it is effective
regardless of a preferred learning
style and it can be self-pacing –
the individual learner goes at their
own speed. For organisations, it
allows both consistency of
approach and messages to be
cascaded throughout an
organisation at low cost.
Education and training is delivered
faster via e-learning. It can be
more effective than classroom or
seminar style learning for many
and is more sustainable in that it
delivers a lower carbon footprint.

What does the e-learning tool include?
The courses are all virtual and take place through the
learner’s browser window. Engagement with instructors
is undertaken online. The material is broken down into
several smaller lessons, each lesson dealing with a
specific area of the overall subject.
The lessons consists of a series of screens with interactive
material and a voiceover narrative. The pace is dictated
by the learner who can pause, replay or resume the
session at any time. The programme records progression
so learners can carry on where they left off. Pages may
also include supporting pictures, real-life video and
animations to help with the learning where appropriate.
The lessons include challenges and quizzes to keep the
learning interesting and interactive.
When all lessons in the course have been completed, the
system automatically records that the learner has
completed the learning material and they are then
directed to an online assessment and/or an online
portfolio. Successful completion of the qualification-
specific assessment then enables the individual to print a
personalised City & Guilds certificate.
