Sound
Sound is a longitudinal wave that travels through a medium such as air. It is produced by vibrating sources that cause compressions and rarefactions in the medium as the vibrations are transferred. Sound travels at about 300 to 340 meters per second through air. It can be reflected, such as in an echo, and its pitch and loudness can be distinguished by variations in frequency and amplitude, respectively. Ultrasounds have frequencies above human hearing range while infrasounds are below.
