1. Who is being represented in this clip?
2. Are they being represented as superior or inferior? (Support this answer
with evidence from the next question)
3. Pick one point from each micro element to comment on how this social group
   is being represented.

EXT: How does this clip construct a stereotypical representation of this social
  group?

โ€ข Now write a PEE for at least two points
โ€ข From your notes

โ€ข Point โ€“ your comment about the area of
  representation
e.g. Youth is represented through diegetic sound.
โ€ข Evidence โ€“ your micro element that tells us this
e.g. The dialogue is colloquial.
โ€ข Explain โ€“ link the two
e.g. This conforms to a stereotypical view of young

  own language.
Answers
โ€ข Youth is represented through mise en
scene. We can see this by the way the
characters have an awkward gap between
them filled by the table to show the divide
between the young and the old. This
conforms to a stereotypical view as there
is a difference between they young and
the old, shown by the distance between
  the two age differences.
Answers
โ€ข Youth is represented through camerawork.
We can see this by the way the younger
characters are filmed with a high angle
and the older characters with a low angle
to show superiority between the two
different ages. This conforms to a
stereotypical view of the idea that the older
generation look down on the younger
  generation disapprovingly.
Is this a typical representation of age?
How could age be represented
      through sound?
How could age be represented
  through mise en scene?
How could age be represented
  through cinematography?
How could age be represented
      through editing?

Marking Criteria
   Terminology
                       Frequent and Accurate use of
         10 media terminology

Use of Examples Consistent evidence from the extract offered.

                         extract
         20

Analysis/Explanation Clear analysis of how the technical
                        aspects are used to
                        construct the particular representation
         20 Understanding of the constructed
                        nature of representation
Strong Responses

Use note taking effectively and were well practiced in working under
timed conditions.
Understood the constructed nature of representation and were able
to explore this through all four micro elements
Used media terminology frequently.
Selected the most relevant examples form the extract and analysed
how the technical aspects constructed age.
Could see the range of representations rather than โ€˜oldโ€™ and โ€˜youngโ€™
Considered whether these representation were conformed to or
subverted stereotypes

Weak Responses

Described the action rather than analysed
Focused primarily on one area and neglect others
Stray from the relevant question- discuss gender/social class etc
Were concerned with TV Drama as genre rather than focus on
representation
Use terminology rarely or inaccurately
Write a short response, intro and conclusion included

e.g. This conforms to a stereotypical view of young

Answers
โ€ข Youth is represented through diegetic
sound. We can see this due to the
screaming of the students being in
  hysterics and the colloquial language
used. This conforms to the stereotype of
young people as over dramatic and having
their own language to speak in.
Answers
โ€ข Youth is represented through use of
editing techniques. We can see this by the
way they use slow edits for the older
generation and quick, fast paced edits for
the younger characters. This conforms to
the stereotype of young people being
frantic and hard to deal with in dangerous
  situtions.
Editing Sound
Weakest area of analysis. Some candidates Was tackled well by some but too much
making no reference at all. focus on dialogue.

Stronger responses discussed the use 180- Clear distinction between diegetic and
degree rule and continuity editing. non-diegetic sound by some candidates.
These candidates also referred to eyeline
matches, shot reverse shot, simultaneous
Need to address use of music in more
action and use of ellipsis.
detail-tempo, pace, sound bridges and link
Also some discussed the pace of editing to specifically to representation.

Mise-en-scene Cinematography
Often very well discussed but at times too Well handled by most with the most
much focus on this area. Some entirely confident use of terminology in this
focused on mise-en-scene area.

Concentration on clothing and props but
little exploration of lighting. Problems for some in just identifying

1. List four sub genres of TV Drama
Period, Soap Opera, Sci-fi and Crime
2. Define the term โ€˜representationโ€™
The way something is shown.
3. Define โ€˜stereotypeโ€™
Atypical view of a group.

  • 9. P.E.E. โ€ข Now write a PEE for at least two points โ€ข From your notes โ€ข Point โ€“ your comment about the area of representation e.g. Youth is represented through diegetic sound. โ€ข Evidence โ€“ your micro element that tells us this e.g. The dialogue is colloquial. โ€ข Explain โ€“ link the two e.g. This conforms to a stereotypical view of young teenagers, that they are rebellious in speaking their own language.
  • 10. Answers โ€ข Youth is represented through mise en scene. We can see this by the way the characters have an awkward gap between them filled by the table to show the divide between the young and the old. This conforms to a stereotypical view as there is a difference between they young and the old, shown by the distance between the two age differences.
  • 11. Answers โ€ข Youth is represented through camerawork. We can see this by the way the younger characters are filmed with a high angle and the older characters with a low angle to show superiority between the two different ages. This conforms to a stereotypical view of the idea that the older generation look down on the younger generation disapprovingly.
  • 12. Is this a typical representation of age?

Understood the constructed nature of representation and were able to explore this through all four micro elements Used media terminology frequently. Selected the most relevant examples form the extract and analysed how the technical aspects constructed age. Could see the range of representations rather than โ€˜oldโ€™ and โ€˜youngโ€™ Considered whether these representation were conformed to or subverted stereotypes Weak Responses Described the action rather than analysed Focused primarily on one area and neglect others Stray from the relevant question- discuss gender/social class etc Were concerned with TV Drama as genre rather than focus on representation Use terminology rarely or inaccurately Write a short response, intro and conclusion included

  • 23. Answers โ€ข Youth is represented through diegetic sound. We can see this due to the screaming of the students being in hysterics and the colloquial language used. This conforms to the stereotype of young people as over dramatic and having their own language to speak in.
  • 24. Answers โ€ข Youth is represented through use of editing techniques. We can see this by the way they use slow edits for the older generation and quick, fast paced edits for the younger characters. This conforms to the stereotype of young people being frantic and hard to deal with in dangerous situtions.

Some entirely confident use of terminology in this focused on mise-en-scene area. Concentration on clothing and props but little exploration of lighting.
