IIoT is often presented as a revolution that is changing the face of industry in a profound manner. In reality, it is an evolution that has its origins in technologies and functionalities developed by visionary automation suppliers more than 15 years ago. As the necessary global standards mature, it may well take another 15 years to realise the full potential of IIoT. Over this period of time the changes to the industry will be far reaching. The good news is that end users and machine builders can now leverage their existing investments in technology and people while taking advantage of available new IIoT technologies.
Introducing IIoT solutions using a “wrap & re-use” approach, rather than a “rip & replace” approach will enable greater business control. In addition, this measured approach will drive the evolution towards a smart manufacturing enterprise that is more efficient, safer, and sustainable. The emergence of the IIoT megatrend has created both hope and confusion among stakeholders responsible for operating industrial plants. Much of the early hype was focused on the impact of technological advancements on existing automation platforms.

Questo fenomeno trova nelle moderne tecnologie IT web based una nuova spinta.

Introduction
Operations technology, referred to as Ops Technology. has transformed the landscape of various industries over the past few decades. It encompasses a broad array of tools, systems. and methodologies used to manage, control. and optimize business operations. From manufacturing to IT services. Ops Technology plays a critical role in enhancing efficiency, productivity, and performance. This article delves into the evolution, key components. and future trends of Ops Technology. providing a comprehensive understanding of its significance in the modern industrial landscape.
Follow us on: Pinterest
The Historical Evolution of Ops Technology
Early Beginnings
Ops Technology has its roots in the Industrial Revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries. where mechanization and steam power revolutionized manufacturing processes. The introduction of machinery boosted productivity. and set the stage for future advancements in operational methodologies.
The 20th Century: Automation and IT Integration
The 20th century saw a series of technological advancements that propelled Ops Technology to new heights. The introduction of assembly lines by Henry Ford in the early 1900s marked a significant milestone. leading to mass production and operational efficiency.
The latter half of the 20th century saw the integration of Information Technology (IT) into operations. The advent of computers, programmable logic controllers (PLCs). and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems transformed how businesses managed their operations. These technologies enabled real-time data processing, improved communication, and streamlined workflows.
The Digital Age: IoT and Big Data
The 21st century has brought about the digital age. characterized by the proliferation of the Internet of Things (IoT), big data, and cloud computing. These technologies have further revolutionized Ops Technology by providing unprecedented levels of connectivity, data analytics, and automation. IoT devices, for example, allow for real-time monitoring and control of industrial processes. while big data analytics enables predictive maintenance and operational optimization.
Key Components of Ops Technology
Ops Technology is a multifaceted domain encompassing various components that work together to enhance operational efficiency. The following are some of the key components:
1. Automation Systems
Automation is at the heart of modern Ops Technology. It involves the use of control systems, such as PLCs and robots. to perform tasks with minimal human intervention. Automation systems are essential for reducing errors, and increasing speed. and improving consistency in operations.
2. Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Systems
They provide a comprehensive view of operations. including inventory management, order processing, human resources, and finance. By centralizing data and processes, ERP systems enable better decision-making and operational efficiency.

24. Maintenance is an important issue for the correct
functions of food machinery. IoT takes maintenance
processes to the next level. Let’s touch this aspect.
25. Machines wear and tear costs time
and money and can damage
due orders and deliveries.
For example, the failure
of a conveyor belt, stops the
grinding process until the
problem is identified and solved.
Failures: what a problem!
26. The IoT generates great
opportunities: now,
a malfunction of equipment can
be “alerted”, predicted
and fixed before it occurs.
Prevent failure with IoT
27. Intervention after the detection of a
damage.
How maintenance is evolving
Downtime.
Replacing components regardless
conditions.
Intervention when machine
identifies anomalies.
Reduced downtime,
maintenance costs saving.
Expensive intervention.

28. Thanks to IoT, a manufacturer has the ability
to understand the current “health state” of its
machinery and can anticipate future
discrepancies.
Predictive maintenance
Indeed, IoT can send streams of data about a
single component, a whole piece of
equipment or about the overall
machinery performance.
29. IoT means, also, big data because the
data come from sensors, embedded
or externally integrated.
However, tons of data alone can’t tell
anything: they need to be
contextualized or related to of business
issues and decisions.
This is made possible by software and
applications, the true value of IoT.
Big data and IoT
30. What are the business advantages and benefits that
IoT brings to a factory and to all the players involved in a
production process?
36. Predictive

(e.g. slicer)
Features Benefits
Wear and tear monitoring
based on telemetry data
Real time control of vital
function parameters
All-in-one machine

37. Remote
monitoring
(e.g. OCS machine)
Features Benefits
Remote control of wear
and tear and monitoring
the consumptions
Alarms and alerts
management
Persistent control of
coffee machines
located in different
places
Dynamic
