Softball began as an adaptation of baseball to allow indoor play in 1887. It was originally played by both men and women but is now only a women's Olympic sport. While the basic rules are similar to baseball, softball uses a larger ball and smaller field, and games last 7 innings instead of 9. Pitching must be done underhand in softball rather than overhand as in baseball.
