Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan as a less physically demanding alternative to basketball. The first game was played at Springfield College in Massachusetts using a tennis net and volleying a ball back and forth. Over the following decades, rules and equipment evolved, and volleyball grew into an international sport played at both the Olympic and professional levels. Key developments included the introduction of spiking in the Philippines in 1916, establishment of the US Volleyball Association in 1928, and inclusion of beach volleyball at the Olympics in 1996.
