Basketball was invented in 1891 by James Naismith in Springfield, Massachusetts. The basic rules of basketball established teams of 5 players, positions including center, guard, and forward, and ways to score points by shooting a ball into a basket mounted high on a backboard. Major basketball leagues include the National Basketball Association (NBA) in the United States, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) which regulates international play, and the Spanish ACB league. An annual NBA All-Star event showcases star players.
