William G. Morgan invented volleyball in 1895 at the YMCA in Holyoke, Massachusetts. He created it as a less strenuous alternative to basketball. Within a few years, volleyball had spread widely at YMCAs and then internationally. It became an Olympic sport in 1964 after growing in popularity globally and becoming a college sport in the United States in the early 20th century.
