HARD WATER
&
SOFT WATER
Water which does not easily form
lather with soap is called hard
water. It is due to the presence of
calcium and magnesium salts in
the form chlorides, sulphates and
bicarbonates.
Water free from soluble salts of
calcium and magnesium is called
soft water. It easily forms lather
with soap.
Soaps are sodium or potassium
salts of fatty acids like palmitic
acid, stearic acid oleic acid etc.
They react with calcium or
magnesium salts presenting in
hard water and form precipitates.
Types of hardness of water
1.Temporary Hardness
2. Permanent hardness
Temporary Hardness
Hardness which can be removed
by simple boiling is called
temporary hardness. It is due to
the presence of bicarbonate of
calcium and magnesium.
1. Boiling: During boiling, the soluble Mg(HCO3)2 is
converted into insoluble Mg(OH)2 and Ca(HCO3)2 is
changed to insoluble CaCO3, which can be removed by
filtration.
Mg(HCO3)2 ⎯⎯⎯⎯→ Mg(OH)2 ↓ + 2CO2 ↑
Ca(HCO3)2 ⎯⎯⎯⎯→ CaCO3 ↓ + H2O + CO2 ↑
2. Clark’s method: In this method calculated amount of
lime is added to hard water. It precipitates out calcium
carbonate and magnesium hydroxide which can be
filtered off.
Ca(HCO3)2 + Ca(OH)2 → 2CaCO3 ↓ + 2H2O
Mg(HCO3)2 + 2Ca(OH)2 → 2CaCO3↓ +
Mg(OH)2↓ + 2H2O
Permanent Hardness
Hardness which cannot be removed
by boiling is called Permanent
hardness. It is due to the presence of
soluble chlorides and sulphates of
calcium and magnesium in water. It
can be removed by the following
methods.
1. Treatment with washing
soda (Sodium carbonate):
Washing soda reacts with soluble
calcium and magnesium chlorides
and sulphates in hard water to form
insoluble carbonates.
CaCl2 + 2Na2CO3 → CaCO3 ↓ + 2NaCl
MgCl2 + 2Na2CO3 → MgCO3 ↓ + 2NaCl
CaSO4 + 2Na2CO3 → CaCO3 ↓ + Na2SO4
2.Calgon’s method:
Sodium hexametaphosphate
(Na6P6O18) is commercially called
‘calgon’. When it is added to hard
water, the Ca and Mg ions in hard
water are replaced by Na+ ions
Na6P6O18 → 2Na+ + Na4P6O18 2-
M 2+ + Na4P6O18 2- →
[Na2MP6O18] 2- + 2Na+
3.Ion exchange method
This method is also called
zeolite/permutit process. Zeolite
/permutit is hydrated sodium
aluminium silicate which can be
written as NaZ. When this is added
to hard water, exchange reactions
take place.
2NaZ + M2+ → MZ2 + 2Na+ (where
M = Mg or Ca)
Permutit/zeolite is regenerated for
further use by treating with an
aqueous sodium chloride solution.
MZ2 + 2NaCl →2NaZ
4. Synthetic resins method:
This method is more efficient than
zeolite process. Pure demineralised
water can be obtained by this
method
H+ Resin + Ca2+ Ca2+ Resin + H+
OH– Resin + Cl- Cl – Resin + OH –
H + + OH – H2O
HYDROGEN PEROXIDE (H2O2)
Methods of preparation
1. It is prepared by acidifying barium peroxide and removing exess
water by evapouration under reduced pressure.
BaO2.8H2O(s) + H2SO4(aq) → BaSO4(s) + H2O2(aq) + 8H2O(l)
2. Industrially it is prepared by auto oxidation of 2-alkylanthraquinols.
2-ethylanthraquinol H2O2 + oxidised product
3. Peroxodisulphate obtained by electrolytic oxidation of acidified
sulphate solutions at high current density , on electrolysis yield H2O2
Structure
Physical properties
 Pure H2O2 is a thick syrupy liquid with pale blue colour
 It is more viscous, less volatile and less than water.
 Density 1.44 g/cm3
 Miscible in water
 MP is 272.4 K and BP is 358 K at 68 mmHg
Chemical properties
1. Oxidising action in acidic medium.
2Fe2+(aq)+2H+(aq)+H2O2(aq) 2Fe3+(aq)+2H2O (l)
PbS(s) +4H2O2(aq) PbSO4(s) + 4H2O(l)
2. Redusing action in acidic medium
2MnO4- +6H+ +5H2O2 2Mn2+ + 8H2O +5O2
HOCl + H2O2 H3O+ +Cl- +O2
3. Oxidising action in basic medium
2Fe2+ + H2O2 2Fe3+ +2OH-
Mn2+ + H2O2 Mn4+ + 2OH-
4. Redusing action in basic medium
I2+H2O2+2OH- 2I-+2H2O+O2
2MnO4-+3H2O2 2MnO2+ 3O2+2H2O+2OH-
Storage
H2O2 decomposes slowly on exposure of light.
2H2O2(l) 2H2O(l) + O2(g)
In the presence of metal surfaces or traces of
alkali(present in glass containers), the above reaction is
catalised. It is therefore , stored in wax-lined glass or
plastic vessels in dark.Urea can be added as a stabiliser. It
is kept away from dust because dust can induce explosive
decomposition of the compound.
Bleaching action of H2O2
 Good bleaching agent
 H2O2 decomposes to form nascent oxygen
which is responsible for its bleaching action
Uses of H2O2
1. Used as hair bleach and as a mild disinfectant. As an
antiseptic it is sold in the market as perhydrol.
2. It is used to manufacture chemicals like sodium
perborate and per-carbonate, which are used in high
quality detergents.
3. It is used in the synthesis of hydroquinone, tartaric
acid and certain food products and pharmaceuticals.
4. It is employed in the industries as a bleaching agent
for textiles, paper pulp, leather, oils, fats etc.
5. It is also used in Environmental (Green) Chemistry.
Heavy water, D2O
It is used as a moderator in nuclear reactors and in
exchange reactions for the study of reaction
mechanisms.
It can be prepared by exhaustive electrolysis of
water or as a by-product in some fertilizer
industries.
It is used for the preparation of other deuterium
compounds.
e.g. CaC2 + 2D2O → C2D2 + Ca(OD)2
Hydrogen economy
The basic principle of hydrogen economy is the
transportation and storage of energy in the form of
liquid or gaseous dihydrogen.
Advantage of hydrogen economy is that energy is
transmitted in the form of dihydrogen and not as
electric power.
Dihydrogen is also used in fuel cells for
generation of electric power.
